Chapter 039
Chapter 39
Sophia held on to the edge of the window frame, her fingers cold with fear as she took in what was going on.
Inside the classroom was a lot going on. The massive wolf tore through desks and chairs as the security guards fought hard to bring it down. But no matter how many times they struck, it barely seemed affected. It moved too fast, dodging, swiping left and right, and sending the women and men flying like rag dolls.
This wasn’t normal, was all that Sophia could think.
Sophia had seen things in her visions before, but nothing prepared her for the horror unfolding right in front of her. She never thought she’d ever be in the same proximity as such a large, dangerous creature, yet, here she was.
A guttural snarl sound came out of the wolf’s mouth, sending never ending chills down her spine. She saw one of the guards fire his weapon at the wolf as a sort of desperate, last resort. But the bullet barely slowed the beast down. Instead, it turned on him, its eyes filled with rage.
Sophia felt horrible as the wolf lunged for the guard. He screamed, as if he could see the end.
She tore her eyes away from the scene as that happened, her heart beating like a mad drum.
Sophia had looked into everyone, including the security when she first got to the school, and then had found out that each security guard could easily take on three or four people in a fight and surely win. Surely, these men didn’t seem like the security that she had read about.
“Hey!”
Sophia yelped, turning around to see Caleb standing behind her with a smirk on his face.
“What the hell, Caleb?” She hissed, pressing a hand to her chest. “Are you trying to kill me?”
Caleb shrugged.
“mean, not really, but your reaction was funny.” Then he frowned. “Why are you standing here? You should be running like everyone else.”
Sophia swallowed.
“No, I can’t.”
Caleb’s expression shifted.
“Sophia—”
“Allison is in there.”
Caleb groaned, running a hand through his hair.
“You’re kidding me, right? The same Allison who wouldn’t hesitate to ruin your life if given the chance? That Allison?”
Sophia nodded, looking away.
“I’m not leaving her.”
Caleb turned to look at her, looking frustrated.
“Fine. But I’m not leaving you here.” Suddenly, the room fell silent.
Sophia’s head snapped back to the window.
The guards were down. Every single one of them.
Some were barely moving, groaning in pain. Others weren’t moving at all. Blood pooled on the floor. Their limbs were either twisted at unnatural angles or completely cut off their body.
It was a massacre.
Sophia put a hand over her mouth, bile rising in her throat.
The wolf stood in the middle of it all, panting heavily. It flicked its ears, looking around m the room until its gaze landed on one spot.
Allison.
She was crouched behind a desk, and her face was pale with terror.
The wolf took some steps forward. Sophia didn’t even think a boy what she was about to do. She started moving.
“Allison!” She screamed, running into the classroom.
“What? Are you insane?” Caleb shouted, running behind her.
But she didn’t stop.
The wolf turned its head toward her, snarling.
Caleb cursed under his breath and ran in after her, reaching the beast just as it jumped towards Sophia. He grabbed the creature around its middle, using all his strength to hold it back and throwing it down.
“Get her out!” Caleb grunted, struggling to keep the wolf from overpowering him.
Sophia grabbed Allison’s arm and yanked her away from her hiding spot.
Then, everything happened at once.
A dark blur shot into the classroom. Another wolf.
But this one was kind of different. Its fur was sleek and black as midnight, its eyes looking like it was burning.
The black wolf crashed into the brown one, sending them both tumbling across the floor. Snarls and growls filled the air as they fought, each one wanting to overpower the other.
Sophia didn’t even waste a second. She grabbed Paige, who was just frozen in shock, and then ran.
Caleb was right behind them, shoving open the door and pushing them through, asking them to keep on running.
They ran down the hallway, past abandoned bags and overturned chairs. The school had become a ghost town, as everyone who could run had already done so.
Caleb saw an empty classroom at the far end of the building.
“In here!” He yelled.
They ran inside, slamming the door shut behind them.
Caleb grabbed a bookshelf and shoved it against the door.
“That should hold for now.”
!Sophia leaned against the wall, breathing heavily. Her hands were shaking.
This was the second time that she had been this close to death, after the poisoning, that is. And yet, all she could think about was the look on Allison’s face before she ran.
Pure, unfiltered terror.
Shock. Like she had no idea why this was happening to her. She looked so helpless.
Caleb turned to her with a furious expression on his face.
“You! What in the world were you thinking?”
Sophia met his eyes stubbornly, still trying to catch her breath.
“I couldn’t just leave her there.”
“Yes, you could!have!” Caleb snapped. “And you should have! What if you died back there? Huh? What if that thing ripped you apart because of her?”
Sophia swallowed hard, looking away.
“I couldn’t let her die.”
Caleb let out a bitter laugh.
“Of course you couldn’t.” He shook his head. “You always do this, Sophia. You care about people who wouldn’t do the same for you. She would have left you to die if you were the one there.”
“That’s not the point—”
“Yes, maybe next time she’ll thank you by roofing you again. You never know!”
Sophia flinched. The room fell silent.
Then, in a softer voice, Caleb added.
“I’m sorry, Soph. I’m just saying that she wouldn’t have saved you, you know? She’s a waste of time.”
Sophia turned away, feeling extremely hurt. She knew all that. She knew exactly what kind of person Allison was. But nobody deserved to die.
Allison scoffed from the corner.
“Are you two done with your little heart to heart?”
Caleb’s eyes darkened as he turned to her.
“Shut up, Allison. You’re as ungrateful as always, you don’t deserve Sophia, or a family even.”
Allison smirked, leaning against the desk.
“I didn’t ask to be saved, you know.”
Paige, who had been quiet until now, glared at her.
“Then maybe next time we should leave you to die. I’m sure we can agree on that.”
Allison rolled her eyes.
“Whatever. I’m just saying that this has nothing to do with me.”
Sophia’s nails dug into her palms.
Nothing to do with her?
“You couldn’t even get up, you were shaking like a leaf under that desk, and even when I pulled you up, you couldn’t run. A simple heartfelt thank you would have sufficed, but you’re choosing to act like this. Should we throw you back?”
Allison suddenly frowned, not daring to say another word.
Caleb took a step forward.
“Left to me, I would’ve preferred if you went to the hospital on an inch of your life. You really are a piece of work, and I honestly want nothing to do with you.” With that, he turned back to Sophia and Paige asking them if they felt okay or needed something.
