Chapter 030

Chapter 30
Sean wasn't in the mood for gossip. He barely was on a normal day, and today was no different from any. His mind was occupied with a hundred different things, and whatever rumours had been flying around since the beach party weren't exactly a priority to him.

But Raymond, his best friend, was relentless. Couldn't stop talking about it.

"Bro, did you even hear what happened after that whole mess at the party?" Raymond asked as they walked down the sidewalk, heading for school.

Sean barely spared him a glance.

"No. And I don't really care."

Raymond scoffed.

"You should. It's about that girl you were arguing with."

That made Sean pause for a second, but he quickly shook it off. He knew exactly who Raymond was talking about. That Sophia girl.

He hadn't really argued with her. More like exchanged a few angry words, kind of. It wasn't a big deal. She'd been acting weird, and he had called her out. That was all.

He hoped his silence would make Raymond understand that he wasn't interested, but Raymond, undeterred, continued anyway.

"I heard that she went unconscious. Right there at the party. Her mum had to come pick her up."

Sean kept his face blank.

"She what?" He asked, not looking at Raymond.

"I knew you were interested in what I had to say!" Raymond exclaimed. "She passed out, man. Just like that. You're telling me you didn't hear a single thing about it?"

Sean shrugged, pushing his hands into his pockets.

"Guess not. It's not like it matters anyway."

Raymond narrowed his eyes.

"You really have nothing to say about that?"

Sean sighed.

"What do you want me to say? The girl is weird. Maybe she was just faking it for attention, wouldn't put it past her."

Raymond let out an exaggerated breath and shook his head.

"You know, sometimes I can't tell if you're just very dense or you actually believe the nonsense that comes out of your mouth. She actually passed out."

Sean rolled his eyes.

"Well if that happened, and her mum came, there's a good chance she's fine now. You're being dramatic."

"Am I?" Raymond pressed. "Or are you just saying all this because of Caleb?"

At that, Sean's shoulders tensed slightly, but he didn't reply. He wasn't about to sit here and discuss Caleb with Raymond. That was the last thing he needed here.

Before Raymond could push further, Sean's phone buzzed in his pocket. He fished it out and glanced at the caller ID, frowning.

Davon Hospitals.

His stomach dropped as he answered, hoping it wasn't bad news.

"Hello?"

"Mr Davis?" A woman's voice asked.

"Yes?"

"This is Nurse Abby from Davon Hospitals. We need you to come down immediately. It's an emergency."

Sean's entire body went still.

"Wait, what kind of emergency?" He asked sharply.

"Sir, please just get here as soon as you can."

The line went dead before he could ask anything else.

For a moment, Sean just stood there, holding his phone so tightly that any more force would break it. His heart was beating faster than it should. He turned to Raymond, who was watching him with a raised brow.

"What's up?" Raymond asked.

Sean exhaled.

"Something urgent. Can you take Teresa to school for me?"

Raymond's brow furrowed.

"Yeah, sure, but what's going on?"

"Alpha duties. No time to explain."

Before Raymond could argue, Sean was already turning back home and heading for his car. He yanked the door open, slid inside, and barked at the driver.

"Davon Hospitals. Now!."

The hospital was bright and sterile, and the smell of antiseptic in the air made Sean want to throw up. Sean hurried through the hospital trying to calm himself down, wondering why hospitals couldn't be a different colour like green or purple. He knew why, but he had to distract himself from thinking the worst of the situation.

Was it about her? After so long, did she finally— no. He shouldn't think such vile thoughts.

When he got to the reception, he went straight to the desk.

"I'm Sean Davis. Someone called me. Said it was an emergency, said she was Nurse Abby."

The nurse at the desk looked up at him and nodded.

"Yes, sir. We've been expecting you. Nurse Abby will be with you shortly."

As if on cue, a woman in scrubs approached him.

"Mr Davis?"

"That's me. And you are?"

"I'm Nurse Abby. I was the one who called."

Sean nodded impatiently.

"Oh, Nurse Abby. That much is obvious now. What's going on? Is everything okay?"

The nurse hesitated, then said.

"We can't say yet. It's about your mother. She was awake— for about five minutes."

For a second, Sean thought he had misheard.

"My mother?" He repeated slowly.

"Yes. She regained consciousness briefly. It didn't last long, but she was awake."

Sean's breath caught in his throat. His mother had been in a coma for so long. The doctors had told him not to get his hopes up. That even if she ever woke up, she might not be the same. He had spent so long preparing himself for the possibility that she might never wake up at all.

And now...

"Where is she?" He asked, his voice tight. This was so unexpected and so...

"This way, please." Nurse Abby said, leading him down the hallway.

Sean followed her, his heart pounding with every step. He wasn't sure what he expected to see when they reached the room, but when he stepped inside, a strange wave of emotions crashed over him.

His mother was lying in the hospital bed, still and peaceful, just like she had been for months. He felt like something was different, but then he knew that nothing was.

He want to his mum and held her limp hands, squeezing them, hoping for something. Maybe she would squeeze back, or move a finger.

Nothing changed. She just lay there.

He turned to the nurse who was looking at him with pity in her eyes. He hated being looked upon like that.

"Was she awake when you called me earlier today?" He asked.

The nurse nodded.

"She was. That was why I called to inform you. I'm sorry you didn't make it in time to see her."

Sean nodded, looking back at his mum. She looked so peaceful, like she was enjoying a deep sleep.

"When she was awake did anything happen? Did she say anything?"

Nurse Abby pursed her lips.

"She was disorientated, but she kept saying your name and calling for Teresa and asking both to come."

Sean's frown deepened. He was glad that his mother was thinking of him and his sister immediately she woke up, but he didn't like that she spent her only awake moments probably panicked and searching for them.

"I see." He stated. If only there was something he could do to keep out of this.

He turned back to his mother, studying her face. Seeing her almost broke his heart right there and then. If only he could bring her home with him.

Sean took a deep breath and turned back to the nurse.

"Can you call me the second she wakes up again?"

"Of course." Nurse Abby said.
