Chapter 68 Chapter 68
Chapter 68
\- Natasha -
My throat went dry.
This is not possible. It cannot be.
What do they mean by she's still carrying a child?
It felt like a prank. There's definitely a mistake somewhere. A very big one
But the swift movements in the hospital looked real
Like when a patient was announced dead and then they suddenly found a pulse
But how can it be? I saw her condition. I saw the blood. The doctors cannot be mistaken
Jason was saying something about a miracle whatever
But I didn't believe in that shit. I did not want to
I was already celebrating my win. I went through a lot to get this done. Now they're all saying my effort is in vain
I stormed out of the hospital, reaching into my pocket for my phone
"Pick the damn call," I said between gritted teeth as I waited for Doctor Kira to take her calls
She didn't pick till after the third ring
"I know you are not deliberately ignoring my calls," I said angrily. I had a feeling she was because she knew what happened.
"Of course not," she said
"Oh it had better not been," I said. "You heard the update."
"Yes, I did. I am rushing to the hospital immediately. I have to see this for myself."
"Is this even possible?" I asked her
"Not in my thirty years of experience," she said. "This has never happened. Not in this part of the world or any that I know of."
"They said the baby is still alive," I said even though I was sure she heard that part already. "But you told me everything had gone perfectly well. You told me you've confirmed it. That there is no pregnancy anywhere."
"You can check with the other doctors and nurses," Kira said. "Ask anybody who's been under this case. I cannot lie to you about that."
"So what is going to happen now? What are we going to do?"
"I have to come in and confirm, to see the situation of things. Then I will let you know if there is anything we can do."
"There has to be something," I said with a harsh whisper. "We cannot have come this far for nothing."
"Please calm down..."
I ended the call while she was still talking. Calm down? How am I supposed to? I was this close, this close to crushing Aria and now someone wants me to believe in some divine intervention
Is she a god or something? Or that child in her is one?
How did she survive this? How did her baby survive it? There has to be some explanation other than the supernatural, whatever.
I turned round and saw Alexei leaning on the wall behind me, his hands in his pocket
I stopped.
"What are you doing here?" I asked him
"What are you doing here?" He threw back softly, but his eyes watched me suspiciously, or no, like he knew something he wasn't supposed to.
"I....I am," I stuttered, not knowing what to say. "For how long have you been standing here?"
"Does it matter," he moved closer. "For how long would you have not wanted me to be here? Who were you on the call with?"
My heart skipped a beat but I braced myself. I must not give it away if I wasn't sure he has actually heard everything and knows
"How is that any of your business?" I asked with a frown, but deep down I was hoping he didn't know.
"You seemed to be very upset. What bad news did you get?" He asked and I looked at him closely
I don't think he knows. This wouldn't have been his reaction if he did
"It's none of your business," I hissed and brushed him out of the way
And Jason? He was happy that another man's baby was safe
He was relieved.
I returned to the palace and to my room
I had gone to the hospital to sympathise with Jason and even Aria
Only for me to get that news and now I will be the one needing sympathy
How did this even fail? I kept asking myself but there were no answers
Or did Kira play me? This was the only possibility I could think of
Oh, she wouldn't dare, I thought angrily within me. She wouldn't dare do such a thing
But there were other people in the ward. And they saw it, they all did and confirmed
Later that day, I had to meet with Dr Kira to understand what exactly was going on
She sat across the table in the almost empty cafe at the outskirts of the pack
She dropped her glasses carefully
"So?" I asked impatiently.
"This is not ordinary," she said with a sigh. "I couldn't believe it until I saw it with my own eyes. The babies are not only intact, but healthy as well."
"I don't even understand...hold up, wait a minute," I closed and opened my eyes briefly, my brain registering what I thought I heard. "Did I just hear you say, 'babies'?"
Kira sighed and I slammed the table with my fist
"Can you respond, Goddamnit, quickly?" I half yelled. The few people in the shop turned to look
"Keep it down Natasha," she looked around. "That was what we found out."
I chucked bitterly
"So not only did you guys mess up the report about her losing the pregnancy, you couldn't even tell how many she was carrying until this miraculous event. Suddenly the baby is not dead. Suddenly it appeared and multiplied. How magical."
"Natasha, I don't know how this..."
"You listen to me and listen good," I pointed at her. "I don't care about what must have happened. You don't have any explanations anyway, what I care about right now is for that pregnancy to be gone. I don't care how you do it. One or two or three babies, power or magic or witches I really don't care. Just do what I ask and I don't care how you are going to go about that."
