Chapter 62 Chapter 62
Chapter 62
\- Aria -
Since Jason has been enjoying my food of late, whenever I felt like it I made food for him
Today was one of those days, I took my time in the kitchen to prepare a meal for him and when I was done, I went looking for him
Most of the time he was in his study working until I reminded him to take a break
When I walked in he was there with Alexei and Natasha. I greeted the two of them collectively before turning to Jason.
Alexei responded, but Natasha scrunched her nose. I had no time for her
"Good evening Alpha."
Jason's face was straight, unsmiling.
"Do you need something?" He asked, his tone the same as his expression. I did not think much of it.
"Oh not really," I said. "I just made some food for you and...I dished it, so I thought to let you know. But if you're busy, I will just come back later."
"Preparing my food is not your duty." If I thought his coldness was not intended the first time, I have been proven wrong now. "We have the maids to do that. I don't know why you'd do it."
"I was...I just thought," I stuttered, completely stunned. What is Jason saying? This is not the first time I am cooking, and he never had any issues with it.
Well except the one time I cooked something he could not have which was a mistake
Why is he sounding this way now? I couldn't understand.
"Is something wrong?" I had to ask.
"Does it look like it? Then the only thing wrong will be you cooking when no one asked you to."
My mouth would have hung open if I did not have the decency to hold them together despite the shock from Jason's words.
I was too shocked to speak. There was a tense silence for a while. Even Alexei and Natasha could tell something was wrong.
"If there is nothing else you can go," Jason did not seem moved by the stiffness his words and tone caused. It seemed normal to him. "As you can see, we are busy here."
Alexei was as surprised as I was, but Natasha, even though she did not have to say or show it, her eyes gleamed with mockery
I felt hurt. Very hurt but I maintained my composure and walked out of the study.
While out, I stood for a while, trying to process what just happened in there.
Perhaps, Jason was not in a good mood. I cleared the table and waited in my room for so many hours till I was sure he was done with what he was doing.
I need to understand why that mood. While I waited, I contemplated so many things. But I wouldn't jump to a conclusion until I hear what he says
Jason was still at his study when I returned, but Natasha and Alexei had left
"Do you have a moment to spare?" I asked him. He kept writing without looking at me.
"Speak," he said.
Speak. Nothing else. So distant. So official.
"Alpha," I sighed. "Earlier today, you did not seem..." I did not know the word to use. "I don't think you were in a very good mood. I mean, when I came and told you I made something for you to eat, your response was off so I was wondering, did something happen? Or did I do something wrong?"
"You have no business with cooking," Jason said still not looking up.
"But I have cooked before and you didn't see anything wrong with it," I was confused.
"Well, maybe that's because we did not state roles, so now I will," he looked at me now, his eyes cold as before. "You don't have to go to the Kitchen Aria. I hope that is not hard to understand."
He returned to writing but I was not settled. How'd he change suddenly? I remembered that the last time his mood went sour, it had something to do with his wife.
Could it be...
"Alpha," I called softly, guardedly. "Does this have anything to do with memories of your late wife?"
"Aria!" He stopped writing immediately and slammed a fist on the table. I shifted back instinctively. He took deep breaths in a bit to steady himself.
"I am sorry..."
"Listen to me," he said, his voice calmer now but his eyes remained cold. "We are together because of a reason and I think we're not on track. You have no business prying into my private life, and likewise, I have no business prying into yours. I would like it, if we maintain our lanes."
Oh so this is what this is about...my heart fell. This is the reason why Jason is acting this way towards me. I wasn't even expecting more than what we both had agreed but I thought our relationship didn't have to be so rigid. He made me feel that and now I'm at fault.
"Well understood," I said, my tone official just like he'd want it. I walked out without another word.
I did not know how to describe what I felt at that moment, but when I saw Natasha outside giving me a knowing look with a satisfied smile plastered on her face, I decided I wasn't going to let her see me in pain because of that even though it hurt so much. I had barely settled in my room when Alexei came in.
"I think he's in a terrible mood," he tried to make excuses for Jason and I smiled.
"No need to explain," I told him. "I can exactly work with what the Alpha wants. What I will not have his him tossing me around because of whatever load he gets into. I have feelings too."
But I knew this was not just about a bad mood. It was what he really wanted. I could see it in his eyes. His actions were deliberate. And if he wants official, then official it is.
