Chapter 48 Chapter 48
Chapter 48
\- Natasha -
It was Elena's death anniversary. Every year on this day since she died, Jason would always stand in the garden alone, watching the stars like he was watching out for her.
No one bothered him while he was there and he wouldn't talk to anyone either, but when I went to him, he never stopped me from speaking some comforting words
"She was the most lovely woman," I said as I stood beside him, watching the stars but not really seeing what he was seeing, or feeling what he felt
"She was the purest," he replied, his tone low and distant. "She completed me in every way. She was my perfect piece."
"She was the perfect Luna. The people loved her. Dead pulled a fast one on all of us," I sighed deeply.
There was silence for a while.
"Every day, I feel the pain of my negligence," he said into the silence, breaking it. "I am reminded that she would have been alive by now if I had protected her."
"Alpha don't be too hard on yourself," I said softly. "It was not your fault. No one plans for such a thing."
"I may have achieved a lot of feats. But what is all the greatness when even rogues can come to my pack, right into my palace and kidnap my pregnant wife? What good is being one of the greatest Alphas if my wife is killed by rogues?"
"Alpha," I called with a sigh. "You need to know, those are part of the struggles that come with being great. Your family and resources would be targeted. It is not your fault really."
"I failed to protect her." It seems he was not even paying any attention to what I was saying.
Year in and year out, I always tell him Elena would be happy to see him move on
But ever since Aria was in the picture, I did not want to make any suggestions
Elena would want him to move on, but not like this. Not with someone like Aria
"Have you thought about what you'd do with Aria after the contract is over and you've had your revenge on her ex-husband?" The thought of Aria made me ask.
I watched his face for a reaction. It was unreadable and he did not answer immediately
"When we get to the bridge, we'll cross it," he said dodgily. That answer did not sit well with me
"I don't think it will be wise to wait till then," I stated. "She's a woman carrying another man's child. Your enemy's child. And you've marked her. You did not think about how you intended to end it after getting what you wanted?"
"It's nothing to worry about Natasha," he looked at me briefly. "Aria and I understand what this is about. Whatever she or I wants to do when this is over, will not be an issue. The most important thing is to focus on achieving what we need to."
"Achieving that is not so difficult for you," I said. "It's you, Alpha Jason. Nothing is difficult for you to achieve. You can do that by yourself. You don't even need Aria to bring down Marcus."
"The only woman capable of giving him heirs?" He said with a light chuckle. "Come on, that is a good bait, I cannot let it slip out of my hands."
"I guess not," I muttered, looking away. Jason had stubbornly refused to see any reason with me. Was there any point in trying to talk him out of it now? "So are you saying if Aria wants to stay back in this pack after everything, you'd let her?"
"Shouldn't I?" He shrugged and I scoffed inwardly. If Aria successfully remains here till Jason tackles Marcus I will not have her spend a minute more
She does not belong here
I looked up at Jason. Even though his face was laced with the heavy burden of his late wife, his features were still radiant in the moonlight
Such a beautiful man. It's such a pity he's never had eyes for me despite all the years we've spent together
I have wondered if he ever will. I held on to a hope that perhaps someday, he'd look beyond our friendship and look at me the way I've always looked at him
And when I thought that time had finally come, Aria came to the picture and ruined everything
"Elena would have given me beautiful babies," I heard him mutter and I drew closer
"Oh Jason," I called softly and slowly rested my head on his shoulder.
He did not resist, so I relaxed and held his massive hand
I closed my eyes, and the feeling of his skin against my mind made me think of things he could only do to me in my head
I could only fantasise about those, in my own world, in my head.
Someone cleared their throat, and it didn't feel like it was happening in my head
I opened my eyes and turned round at the same time as Jason, to see Aria standing behind us
Even this imaginary blissful moment, this bitch would not let me have, I thought within me angrily
There was something about the way she stood there, calmly watching, that made me feel uneasy, like I was taking something that belonged to her
Her eyes lingered on where I had held Jason for too long so I had to let go
Only then did she speak
"If you will excuse me, I would like to have a word with my husband please," she said, looking at me straight in the eyes
I looked at Jason and back at her. He did not say anything. Did not tell her to give us a moment
She was after all, the one posing as a wife.
I was so mad that I was the one who had to leave for her
But it seems I did not have any choice. Jason was not saying anything either. He was just looking at her like she had every right to excuse me. Me... who's been in this pack and with him for so many years
I had to leave for her.
