Chapter 35

\- Jason -

The large hall was filled with Alphas, their wives and some of the Nobel representatives of their packs

But even in the gathering, there were Alphas in high chairs due to their strengths and achievements

I had one reserved for me, and the last time Marcus did not qualify. This time he did. So he was seated opposite me with his wife, Sophie.

Natasha sat beside me instead of Aria.

Alpha Marcus kept grinning from ear to ear, sitting with an air of importance

The meeting started and when it was time for the food, one of the Lords turned to me

"I heard you have a wife now," he said and every head turned to me, all eager to hear my answer including Marcus

"Yes I do," I replied casually

"Okay? So where is the lady?" He asked further. "Why did you not bring her to the meeting?"

"My Lord, she's not in a very good state at the moment and I do not want to stress her," I told him and even though they were not satisfied with my answer, they knew they could not push any further

"Alpha Jason," another of the Lords called my attention. "You did not even bother to invite many of us to the ceremony. We would have loved to see who the woman who eventually caught your heart is."

"I tried to invite as many as I could my Lord," I said to him. "But at the same time I didn't want to bother your very busy schedules, my Lord. It's nothing serious."

"Nothing serious?" Another chipped in. "No ceremony of yours is ever not serious. Especially this one. It would have been a pleasure to see who she is. We don't have any idea who the lucky woman is, ehh."

"Alpha Jason will not hide her for so long," it was Marcus who spoke this time and I did not miss the mockery in his voice. "You should not hide your woman if you really love her. A family is an achievement. Unless perhaps, you just did it for duty and to prevent the side talks of you not being able to have another wife after the death of Elena?"

"Of course I wouldn't hide her," I remained calm. "By the goddess, next summit she will be here."

"And hopefully too with a child or more," Marcus said gingerly, like he was excited about the thought of me having a child. "Just like me. As you can see, the goddess has been so gracious to me. Everyone knows the history of my ancestors' curse. But I have achieved a lot of heights since the last time. So many things changed for my good. I have a beautiful woman who is carrying my child."

He pulled Sophie closer and smiled, looking me straight in the eyes

I smiled back at him

"You said Sophie is pregnant?" I asked.

"Very," he replied with pride

"How sure are you about that?

There was a light murmur in the room

"Alpha Jason, don't you think that is a bit insensitive?" Someone chided

"No, don't worry about it," Marcus said to the person, but his eyes remained on me, the smile disappearing from his face. "I will answer him. Sophie is as pregnant as pregnant can be. Do you think I would be so careless as not to have confirmed it?"

"Oh of course you should, with the curse, I don't expect you wouldn't," I returned to my food with a smile on my face seeing that he had lost his

"That's enough now," someone said as the tension on the table grew. "Let's eat and be merry. Remember no one is here to fight anyone."

I ignored Marcus for the rest of the meeting and after a while decided to go have some breeze, the loud music and chatterings getting into my head

After a while, I noticed Sophie in the distance asking something from the maids and I casually scrolled to her

"Hello there," I called, standing behind her

"Yes? What do you wa..." She turned round and the words dried midway.

"Hello Sophie," I smiled at her. "It's been a while. How are you doing?"

She turned and looked around

"What do you want Jason?" She asked with a deep frown on her face

"I just want to say hi. Nothing more. At least, I am not a stranger to you."

"I don't have anything to do with you anymore. I am a married woman and I don't want to talk to you," she made to walk away but I pulled her back

"Not so fast darling. You don't think I am going to let go after everything you've done to my brother?"

"What happened between your brother and me was in the past. Besides, I did not kill him."

"He died because of you. Chris loved you so much and you knew that. Yet after pushing him into rebellion you ran away. Or you think I don't know what you did?"

"I don't know what you are talking about," she hissed. I decided to let that slide. This was not the time to talk about this. However, Sophie would definitely pay for her crimes

"I hope you were not asking for more wine. I know you like that, but to get your act right you have to pretend not to. Pregnant women shouldn't take a lot of wine. Except you don't have anything to worry about. You are not pregnant."

Her eyes widened

"And what is that supposed to mean?
How dare you say that to me?" She rasped.

"Oh come on Sophie, you know I know you. You and I know you are not pregnant. And should I feel sorry for Marcus that he's holding on to a perfect lie crafted by a cunning woman like you? No. But don't worry. I am not in a hurry to expose you. Let's see how long you'd hold on with the facade."

"What the hell is going on here?" Marcus appeared behind her. "What do you think you are doing, Alpha Jason?"
