Chapter 24 Chapter 24
Chapter 24
\- Aria -
Alpha Jason threw a huge party for me and it was...well, one of the biggest I had ever seen and to think it was all in my honour
Even though I was Luna once I never really experienced what this is like
After the party, Alpha Jason turned to me
"You are Luna now, officially. Let's see what good you make of it this time around."
But all Jason leaves me with are words and I needed more
"I have spoken to Natasha to put you through," he told me. "And she agreed. I hope you are a fast learner."
So I decided to meet Natasha the next morning and try to make the initiative instead
Besides, this is the best opportunity for me to be friends with her, hopefully it makes her like me even a bit
I dressed up and went to her chambers. She was already up and looking so elegant even in the morning that I almost gawked at her
Her face held a bit of surprise when she saw me, perhaps not expecting me in her house
"Good morning Natasha," I greeted softly and she looked away, busy with attending to the books in the shelf of her study
"'Come right in," she said without looking at me.
"I know you are wondering why I am here. Alpha Jason tells me you are to guide me around here."
"I know. You don't have to restate my duties to me," she said
"Oh of course not," I chuckled with uncertainty. "That...that is not what I am trying to do. The alpha told me you agreed to his request and I want to thank you because I didn't think..."
"You didn't think that I was going to want to do that for you, and that's what you insinuated to the alpha, so he thinks I have something against you?" She interrupted, looking me full in the face.
"What?" I muttered. "No, I did not tell the alpha anything. I only wanted to thank you for your kindness."
"I agreed to the alpha's request not yours. You don't have to thank me," she looked away again, backing me
My hands felt sweaty at the wall she was putting between us. This wasn't going to be any easy but I have to push harder
"I was thinking, maybe as one of my duties as a Luna, I should..." She scoffed and I stopped talking for a while, but continued anyway when she didn't say anything. "I was just thinking maybe I could organise a get-together with the people. Especially the women and children so we'd get to know each other and they'd tell me their concerns we could look into."
Natasha did not reply immediately and the silence stretched on till I felt like a fool
"So why are you telling me?" When she finally decided to reply that was what she said
"I uhm... because I need your advice and guidance."
"You just said it yourself," she looked at me. "That you are Luna. A Luna does not wait for anyone to tell her or approve what she wants to do. She doesn't seek approval, she gives orders."
Natasha was not making this any easier for me, but I decided not to break
"Natasha," I moved closer. "I barely know this pack. I am married to a man I barely know too. I cannot do this on my own. I did say I came here to thank you for accepting the Alpha's request, but the truth is, I actually want us to be friends."
I reached out and tried to touch her arm, but she gave me a dead stare, and I held back. I continued talking anyway, now that I seemed to get her attention with what I said
"I just want us to be able to relate with each other freely if you don't mind. You have been in this palace for so long, you are rooted and informed. Anyone who wants to have a life here must have you by their side. And that is why I have come to you."
I watched her expression closely, hoping she would consider my proposal
But her face was expressionless and I could not tell what she was thinking
"I am a servant of the throne. I serve and protect my people. A servant does not become friends with his masters," she said
"But you have been a friend to the Alpha and his family," I pointed out
She squinted her eyes at me
"I am friends with the alpha because he regards and listens to me. You don't regard or listen to me because if you did, you wouldn't be here today. I warned you, but you did not take my counsel. Now tell me, how can I be friends with someone who does not listen to me?"
I backed away instinctively, knowing this was a lost cause. Natasha would not be of any help to me because she feels I am a threat to whatever it is she has with the alpha
Just when I decided there was no going forward with her and was about to turn around and leave, she spoke again
"But you are Luna now and I think there's nothing anyone can do about it. Besides, I have agreed to assist you while you are here and I have to fulfil it."
She dropped the book she was holding
"How about we start with a stroll around the pack? Get to know the places and see the life of the people here?"
"That will be great, Natasha," I smiled a little. At least, that was something.
"I'll ready the ride then and get the guards," I said as I walked to the door
"Oh that wouldn't be necessary," she quickly but calmly said. "You don't need all of that. It's just a harmless stroll. Besides I am with you, a trained warrior. You need not fear anything. We'll be back before you know it."
I was sceptical about that
"Don't tell me you're the kind of Luna who tries to show off her power, walking around with so many guards and maids even to see her people go about their activities. Sure way to get them not to like you."
"Oh no, of course not. We can go then since there is no need for that."
"Good."
