Chapter 50 THE TRANSFORMATION RITUAL
ALICIA’S POV
The ritual room is freezing.
Elder Pascal insisted we use the old ceremony chamber beneath the packhouse. Stone walls covered in ancient symbols. A pool of water in the center that's been blessed by moon priestesses centuries ago. Candles everywhere, their flickering light casting dancing shadows that make the carvings seem alive.
I'm terrified.
"You need to remove your clothes." Pascal's voice is matter of fact. Like he's not asking me to strip naked in front of five men. "The ritual requires skin contact. No barriers between you and Ray or the water."
"All of it?" My voice shakes.
"All of it." He doesn't look at me as he speaks. Too focused on preparing herbs, grinding them in a stone bowl. "Modesty has no place in death magic."
Ray's already undressing. I force myself to do the same. The other three mates stand at cardinal points around the pool. Monty to the north. Kai to the east. Logan to the south. They're fully clothed, each holding a white candle. Their faces are grim.
One of them is a spy. Working for Morrison. But right now, they're all here. All focused on keeping me alive through whatever comes next.
"The water is blessed but also poisoned." Pascal adds more herbs to the mixture. "Wolfsbane. Nightshade. Silver dust. Enough to stop your hearts without killing you permanently. In theory."
"In theory?" I'm completely naked now, arms crossed over my chest.
"This ritual hasn't been successfully performed in three hundred years." Pascal finally looks at me. "The last attempt killed both participants. But they didn't have three other mate bonds to anchor them. You do. That's your advantage."
"Some advantage." I step toward the pool. The water is crystal clear and deceptively calm. "How cold is it?"
"Cold enough to shock your system. Slow your breathing. Make your heart struggle." Pascal hands me a cup filled with dark liquid. "Drink this first. It will prepare your body for what comes next."
I take the cup. Sniff it. The smell is terrible. Bitter herbs mixed with something metallic. "What's in it?"
"Better you don't know." Ray takes his own cup from Pascal. "We drink together. On three."
I nod. Our eyes meet. In them I see fear and determination and love all mixed together.
"One." Pascal's voice is steady. "Two. Three."
We drink. The liquid burns going down. It tastes like death and darkness and ancient magic. I gag but force myself to swallow all of it.
Ray finishes his cup at the same time. We both drop them, the stone cups clattering on the floor.
"Now into the water. Hold each other. Don't let go no matter what happens." Pascal moves to stand between Monty and Kai. "The three anchors will begin the chant when your hearts stop. They'll pull you back through the mate bonds. But you have to want to come back. I have to fight for it."
"How long will we be under?" Ray asks.
"Until your hearts stop completely. It could be three or ten minutes." Pascal's voice is grave. "The herbs will slow you down gradually. The cold will finish the job. When you both flatline, that's when the transformation begins."
"And if it doesn't work?" I have to ask.
"Then you stay dead. And I go back to my cell having failed to save the True Luna." Pascal almost smiles. "So let's hope it works."
Ray takes my hand and together we step into the pool.
The cold is immediate. The water is so ice cold it feels like knives against my skin. I gasp. I try to step back. But Ray pulls me deeper.
"Together." His voice is firm. "We do this together."
We wade to the center. Water up to our chests now. Ray pulls me close, our naked bodies pressing together. Normally this would be intimate, but there's nothing romantic about this moment. Just two people preparing to die in each other's arms.
"Lie back." Pascal instructs. "Let the water cover you. Hold each other. Don't fight it."
Ray guides us down. We sink beneath the surface together. The cold water closes over my head. My hair floats around me. Ray's arms are tight around my waist. Mine around his neck.
Through the water I can see the three mates standing above, chanting. Even underwater I can feel the vibration of their voices.
My lungs start burning. I need air. I need to breathe.
Ray's grip tightens.
The herbs are working. I can feel my heartbeat slowing. Each beat takes longer. My body temperature dropped rapidly.
This is dying. This is what death feels like.
My vision starts going gray at the edges. Ray's face is the only thing I can focus on. His storm grey eyes locked on mine, refusing to let fear win.
The corrupted bond between us pulses.
Then something changes. The bond starts shifting. The sickness was transforming like poison being burned away by something hotter.
It hurts. God, it hurts. Worse than anything I've felt before. Worse than the corrupted bond at its peak. This is that pain multiplied by a thousand.
I scream. Bubbles escape my mouth. Water rushes in. I started choking.
Ray's screaming too. I can see it even though I can't hear it underwater. His face contorted in agony.
The bond is transforming. Breaking apart and reforming. Corrupted pieces being stripped away and replaced with something new.
My heartbeat slows further. Almost stopped now. I can barely feel it.
Ray's the same. His pulse against my chest is fainting.
We're really dying.
The mate bonds with the other three flares to life. Pulling and calling me back.
They're trying to anchor me. To keep me tethered to life.
But it's not enough. The transmutation requires death. Complete death. Only then can the corrupted bond fully transform.
My heart stops. I feel it. The moment it just quits beating.
Ray's stops at the same moment. His eyes go distant.
We're dead. Both of us. Floating in poisoned water. Holding each other in death like we couldn't in life.
The world goes black. Complete darkness.
Then I heard a distant voice.
"Fight, Alicia. Fight for your child. Fight for us."
Monty. Calling through the mate bond. His voice is a lifeline in the darkness.
Another voice joins. "You're not done yet. Come back."
Kai commanded and I obeyed.
A third voice. "We need you. The baby needs you. Come back to us."
It was Logan.
The three bonds pull. Dragging me away from the peaceful darkness toward something bright and painful.
I don't want to go. Death is quiet and peaceful. No more fear. No more fighting. No more impossible choices.
But the bonds won't let go or let me rest, demanding I return.
Ray. Where's Ray? Is he hearing the same calls? Is he fighting to return too?
Through the darkness I feel him. I feel our bond, uncorrupted.
It worked. The transformation worked.
But we're still dead. We still need to come back.
"Together." I heard Ray's voice in my mind.
"Together." I agree.
We follow the three bonds. The darkness starts fading, replaced by sensation.
My heart beats once.
Ray's does the same. Out of sync with mine but alive.
It started beating faster and stronger now.
The three mates pulled us in the water.
I cough up water. Lungs burning. Body shaking violently from cold and shock and magic.
Ray is the same beside me, coughing.
"It worked." Pascal's voice sounds surprised. "By the moon goddess, it actually worked."
Warm blankets appear. The three mates wrapped us and spoke words I can't quite process yet.
But I can feel it. The bond no longer felt corrupted. It transforms into something protective. Something that won't destroy us or the baby.
We did it. We died and came back.
"The baby." My voice is raw. "Is the baby okay?"
Sarah, the healer, is already there with her portable ultrasound. She pours gel on my stomach and presses it with a wand
"The baby's fine." Sarah's voice came out relieved. "Somehow, miraculously, the baby's fine."
I start crying. Relief flooding through me. We survived, the baby survived and the bond is fixed.
"How do you feel?" Monty asks quietly. His hand on my shoulder.
"Like I died." My voice is still rough. "Because I did."
"But you came back." Kai said. Like he expected nothing less. "You both came back."
I look at Ray. He's staring at me with wonder. "The bond. Can you feel it?"
I can. It's there. It’s still connecting us but clean now.
"It's beautiful." The words come out like a whisper.
"It's right." Ray reaches for my hand. "Finally right."
Logan checks his watch. "We have thirty minutes until midnight. Until Morrison expects you at Crystal Lake."
Reality crashes back. The ritual was just the first obstacle.
Now comes the hard part.
Facing Morrison, rejecting his offer and figuring out which of my mates has been betraying us all along.
