Chapter 27 SHATTERED TRUST
ALICIA’S POV
The sound of Ray's fist hitting the wall echoes through the packhouse long after he's gone.
I stand frozen in the training room where it happened, staring at the blood smeared on stone. My, his blood, the corrupted bond's blood. All mixed together in a mess I created with one carelessly spoken name.
Kai.
I'd said Kai's name while Ray was kissing me. I had moaned another man's name like Ray meant nothing.
The look on his face before he left is burned into my memory. Hurt so deep it went past anger straight into something cold and unreachable.
"Alicia." Monty's voice is gentle behind me. "You should sit down."
"I can't." My legs are shaking, but sitting feels wrong. Like giving up. "I need to find Ray. Need to explain."
"Explain what?" Monty moves around to face me. "That you were thinking about Kai while Ray was trying to reconnect with you? That'll go over great."
"I wasn't thinking about Kai. The name just slipped out."
"Names don't slip out during intimacy, Alicia. They surface because your mind is already there." His voice is matter of fact, not cruel. Just honest. "Ray knows that. Hell, we all know that."
Shame burns through me, hot and acidic. "I didn't mean to hurt him."
"Doesn't matter if you meant it. You did." Monty guides me to a bench against the wall. "And now you have to deal with the consequences."
I sink onto the wood, wrapping my arms around myself. The mate bonds pulse inside me. Ray's feels distant now, muted like he's deliberately pulling away.
"What do I do?" The question comes out small, defeated.
"Give him space. Let him process." Monty sits beside me, close but not touching. "Ray's possessive as hell. Always has been. Sharing you with three other men is already pushing him past his limits. This just confirmed his worst fear."
"That I don't love him anymore?"
"That he's not enough for you." Monty's brown eyes are serious. "That's the real wound. Not the name itself, but what it represents. He can't be everything to you, and that's killing him."
Footsteps approach. Kai appears in the doorway, taking in the scene. "I felt something through the bond. What happened?"
Heat floods my face. "Nothing. Just a misunderstanding."
"Alicia said your name while Ray was trying to claimher." Monty's bluntness makes me flinch. "Ray's pissed. Rightfully so."
Kai's expression doesn't change, but something flashes in his eyes. "Where is he now?"
"Probably destroying something in his quarters." Monty stands. "I should check on him before he tears the place apart."
"Wait." I grab his wrist. "Don't tell him I'm sorry. Not yet. He won't want to hear it from me."
"I know." Monty squeezes my hand once, then leaves.
Silence fills the space. Kai leans against the doorframe, arms crossed, studying me like I'm a puzzle he can't quite solve.
"You should go too." I can't meet his eyes. "This is embarrassing enough without an audience."
"You said my name."
"I know what I did."
"Why?" He pushes off the doorframe, moving closer. "We barely know each other. Haven't even completed our claiming. So why was I in your head while Ray was claiming you?"
"I don't know." Lie. I know exactly why. Because Kai represents something Ray can't give me. Freedom from expectations. Distance without abandonment. A mate who doesn't need me to be anything except alive.
"Another lie." He bent down in front of me, forcing eye contact. "You're a terrible liar, Alicia. Your heartbeat spikes every time."
"Fine. You want the truth?" My anger burns, hot after the shame. "I thought about you because being with Ray is complicated. There's history and guilt and the corrupted bond always lurking. But with you?" I laugh bitterly. "With you, it's simple. You don't expect anything. Don't demand explanations. You just exist beside me without needing me to be more than I am."
Kai's quiet for a long moment. "That's not simple. That's running away."
"Maybe I want to run. Maybe I'm tired of being the center of everyone's expectations and fears and prophecies." My voice cracks. "Maybe I just want five minutes where I'm not the True Luna or the corrupted mate or the girl who needs saving. Maybe I want to be nobody."
"You'll never be nobody." His hand cups my face, thumb brushing away a tear I didn't realize had fallen. "You're marked by four mates and carrying power that could reshape the wolf world. Nobody isn't an option anymore."
"Then what are my options?"
"You face it. All of it. The messy, complicated, painful reality of being bonded to four men who all want different things from you." He stands, offering his hand. "Starting with apologizing to Ray. Even if he won't accept it yet."
I take his hand, letting him pull me up. "He hates me right now."
"He's hurt. That's different." Kai doesn't release my hand. "And for what it's worth? I understand why you thought of me. I've been thinking about you too."
The admission hangs between us, charged with possibility and danger in equal measure.
Before I can respond, running footsteps echo through the hallway. Logan appears, face grim. "Council meeting. Now. Pascal's called everyone to the main hall."
My stomach drops. "Why?"
"The pack's breaking apart. Word spread that you and Ray had a... disagreement. People are questioning whether you should still be under pack protection."
"Are you serious?" Kai's voice goes cold. "She's his mate."
"She's the reason the pack is in danger." Logan's expression is apologetic but firm. "That's how they're seeing it. Vincent's threats, Jake's attacks, rogue packs at our borders. All because of her."
"That's not her fault."
"Doesn't matter whose fault it is. What matters is what the pack believes." Logan looks at me. "You need to attend this meeting. Defend yourself. Or they'll vote to remove you from pack protection."
The words hit like ice water. Without pack protection, I'm vulnerable. Any wolf could challenge me, hurt me, kill me without consequence.
"Let them try." Kai's hand tightens on mine. "They'll have to go through me first."
"And me." Logan's voice is steady. "Whatever the council decides, you're not facing it alone."
We make our way to the main hall. The space is packed with wolves, all watching as I enter. The hostility is thick enough to taste. These wolves don't want me here. Don't want the complications I bring.
Ray's already seated at the head table, expression carved from stone. He doesn't look at me as I take a seat in the center of the room. Monty sits behind him, worry clear on his face.
Elder Pascal stands, commanding immediate silence. "We're here to discuss the matter of Alicia Rowe's continued presence in Dark Night Pack."
My heart beats. This is really happening.
"She's brought nothing but danger since arriving." Lotan, a senior warrior, stands. "Vincent's made threats. Jake's attacked twice. Now we have rogues camping at our borders. How many more of our people have to die before we admit she's not worth the trouble?"
Murmurs of agreement ripple through the crowd.
"She's the Alpha's mate." Monty speaks up. "That gives her protection regardless of circumstances."
"Is she?" Lotan looks directly at Ray. "Because from what I heard, there's trouble in paradise. The Alpha and his mate barely speaking. The corrupted bond still festering. Four mates when tradition demands one." He turns back to the crowd. "She's not a true mate bond. She's a political disaster wrapped in prophecy we don't understand."
More agreement. Louder this time.
Pascal raises a hand for silence. "Alpha Ray. You've been quiet. What do you have to say about your mate's place in this pack?"
Every eye turns to Ray. Including mine.
He sits perfectly still, storm grey eyes fixed on some point beyond the crowd. When he finally speaks, his voice is flat, emotionless.
"She stays."
Relief floods through me.
"But," Ray continues, and my relief turns to dread, "she stays under conditions. No more unsupervised trips outside pack borders. No more political negotiations without my explicit permission. And no more divided loyalties."
The last part stings. He's talking about the name. About Kai.
"That's essentially house arrest." Logan protests.
"That's protection." Ray finally looks at me, and his eyes are empty. "She stays. She lives. She follows the rules. Everyone wins."
It doesn't feel like winning. It feels like being caged.
Before I can respond, the hall doors slam open. A young wolf staggers in, face pale with shock. He's carrying something wrapped in cloth.
"Message from Blood Moon Pack." His voice shakes. "For the Alpha."
He sets the cloth bundle on the floor and unwraps it carefully.
A severed wolf head rolls out. Fresh blood still drips from the neck. And carved into the forehead, deep enough to scar even in death, are words:
RETURN MY DAUGHTER OR WAR BEGINS AT DAWN.
Vincent's handwriting. I'd know it anywhere.
The hall erupts in chaos. Wolves shouting, demanding action, calling for retaliation. Some calling for me to be handed over immediately.
Ray stands slowly, staring at the severed head. "When did this arrive?"
"Ten minutes ago. Border patrol found it at the western marker." The young wolf looks like he's about to be sick. "They're waiting for a response."
"Tell them…" Ray's voice cuts through the noise like a blade. "Tell them the answer is no. Alicia stays. And if Vincent wants war, we'll give him war."
Pascal moves to Ray's side. "Alpha, consider carefully. We're not prepared for full scale conflict with Blood Moon."
"Then we prepare fast." Ray's Alpha authority floods the room, forcing silence. "Double patrols. Fortify borders. Arm every able-bodied wolf. Vincent wants his daughter back? He can come take her."
Lotan stands again. "You're risking the entire pack for one girl!"
"I'm defending my mate from her abusive father." Ray's eyes go black with wolf. "Anyone who has a problem with that can challenge me right now."
No one moves. Lotan sits down slowly.
Ray looks at me finally. Really looks at me. And despite everything that's happened between us, despite the hurt and the complications, I see determination in his eyes.
"You're staying here. Under my protection. Under the pack's protection whether they like it or not." His voice is absolute. "Vincent doesn't get to threaten you anymore."
Tears prick my eyes. After everything, after hurting him so badly, he's still choosing me.
"Thank you." It's inadequate, but it's all I have.
He doesn't respond. Just turns to Pascal. "How long until dawn?"
Pascal checks the window. "Six hours. Maybe less."
"Then we have six hours to prepare for war." Ray addresses the whole pack now. "Everyone to your positions. This ends tonight. One way or another."
The pack disperses in organized chaos. Warriors grabbing weapons. Scouts heading for borders. Elders coordinating defensive positions.
I stand in the center of it all, staring at my father's message written in blood and violence.
War begins at dawn.
Because of me. Because I couldn't stay where I belonged. Because I chose love and freedom over duty and obedience.
And now people will die.
Kai appears at my side. "Don't."
"Don't what?"
"Blame yourself." His voice is certain. "Vincent made this choice. Not you. He's the one threatening war over pride."
"I'm still the reason."
"No. You're the excuse." Logan joins us, armed and ready. "Vincent's been looking for a reason to attack Dark Night for years. You just gave him political cover."
Monty approaches from the other side. "Ray meant what he said. You're protected. All of us will make sure of it."
The four mate bonds beats with united determination. Despite everything, despite the complications and the hurt and the impossible situation, they're all standing with me.
Even Ray, who won't look at me but is preparing to go to war for me.
Through the windows, I see the sky starting to lighten. Dawn is coming.
And with it, everything changes.
I just hope some of us survive to see what comes after.
