Chapter 14
Sophie went and checked to make sure that the kids were asleep, and then she went to bed. The night seemed to be a short one compared to other nights, when she was suddenly awakened by Heather.
“Mommy get up, I am hungry. I cannot go to school today though, the teacher said for me to stay home since I want to act like a baby.”
“She did not mean it. Why would you act like a baby to begin with? You really need to stop acting like that. You are six, not two. The next time you decide to act like a two year old I will ground you and take away the television and all your toys. Do you understand me? Then I will treat you like a two year old and buy you diapers and bottles. Jared, Kay-Leah, get up time to go to school.”
“They already left, a long time ago.”
Sophie looked at the clock, it was already ten o’clock.
“Shit, Heather, you are late for school. Go get dressed. I guess I will have to drive you to school. Why didn’t Kay-Leah get you ready? I guess it is time to have a nice long talk with her too.”
Sophie drove Heather to school and while she was there went in to talk to Heathers teacher.
“Excuse me, can we talk about Heather. Heather go on go to your seat. Would you like to explain what the deal is with my daughter? She tells me that you said for her not to come back to school unless she can stop acting like a baby. Is that true? Did you tell her that?”
“Yes it is true. I sent a note home with her as well explaining all of this to you. I told her to make sure that she gave the note to you.”
“Well, she did not give me a note. Next time I would appreciate it if you would just call me when she acts up. Her father and I are getting a divorce and she is not dealing with it very well. She is a big problem at home as well. Please, next time, just call me; do not send any type of notes.”
“Mrs. Sharp, I am sorry that you are having problems at home, I am sorry that things are bad with your children, but I do have other students and cannot just give time to your child. Next time I will call or just send Heather to the office.”
“Thank you. That is all I ask for.”
On the way back home Sophie decided to stop to make Kay-Leah a doctor appointment. The sooner the better. Although the soonest that was available was three weeks away. Sophie would just have to make sure that nothing more went on between Austin and Kay-Leah between now and then. Of course she was not quite sure how she would do that since she would be at work and had no way to be able to keep an eye on them. She could not be with her every minute of the day. Sophie just hoped that she would not be too late in making the doctor appointment.
