CHAPTER 155
CHAPTER 155
~ THE MORNING AFTER ~
The penthouse was bathed in the golden light of late morning. The intoxicating scent of the Queen of the Night had faded, replaced by the rich, comforting aromas of freshly brewed coffee, sizzling bacon, and something sweet baking in the oven.
The balcony, their starlit sanctuary, now stood clean and empty, the blanket and pillows discreetly put away.
Cassandra emerged first from the hallway, feeling the pleasant, unfamiliar ache in her muscles and the dazzling new weight on her left hand. She’d chosen a soft cashmere sweater and comfortable jeans, her skin still humming with the memory of his touch.
Killian was a solid, warm presence right behind her, his hand coming to rest on the small of her back. He wore a dark grey henley that stretched across his shoulders and soft, worn jeans.
The usual vigilant tension in his frame was replaced by a new, profound relaxation. He looked like a man who had finally, after a long campaign, come home and found everything he’d been fighting for.
The scene in the open-plan living area was a portrait of domestic chaos, and it froze for a split second as they entered.
At the large stove, Elena was masterfully flipping blueberry pancakes, her hair tied up in a messy bun. Julian was perched on the counter beside her, ostensibly taste-testing a piece of bacon, but his attention was entirely on the way she bit her lip in concentration.
At the kitchen island, Juan was methodically slicing fresh fruit, while Lena leaned against the counter next to him, stealing pieces of mango from the cutting board. Juan would swat her hand away half-heartedly, a fond, private smile playing on his lips whenever she succeeded.
Alexander and Isabella were curled together on one end of the large sofa, a shared tablet between them. Alexander’s arm was draped over Isabella’s shoulders, his fingers absently tracing patterns on her arm. At five months pregnant, she had a radiant glow, her small baby bump prominent under her cozy dress.
But it was the scene at the dining table that made Cassandra’s heart squeeze. Her best friend, Daisy, was already there, sipping orange juice. And Levi was not building a card house, but was instead attempting to assemble a complex-looking espresso maker, parts and tools spread around him.
“I told you to just use the regular coffee pot!” Daisy said, her voice a familiar, fond exasperation.
“And I told you, Dove, that for a morning this momentous, we need the good stuff.” Levi retorted, squinting at an instruction manual. “I’m creating a culinary experience for you.”
“You’re creating a mess!” She countered, but she was hiding a smile behind her juice glass.
Adrian sat nearby, carefully drawing a calm island in the storm of Levi’s “culinary experience.”
The freeze-frame lasted only a moment before the room whirred back to life, but with a new, charged energy.
Julian was the first to speak, his voice a lazy, teasing drawl. “Well, look what the cat dragged in. Or should I say, what finally dragged them out.” He waggled his eyebrows at Killian, who fixed him with a flat, warning stare.
Elena elbowed Julian in the ribs, but she was grinning. “Ignore him. You two look… well-rested.” Her gaze dropped to the magnificent ring on Cassandra’s finger, and her grin widened. “And officially shiny! Let me see!”
But before Cassandra could even blush, Daisy was out of her chair. She crossed the room in three quick strides, her eyes wide. She completely ignored the ring, grabbing Cassandra’s hands and staring at her face.
“Oh my god!” Daisy breathed, her voice full of awe and utter delight. She knew Cassandra better than anyone. She saw the new, soft light in her eyes, the faint blush that had nothing to do with embarrassment, the way she seemed to be glowing from within.
“I can't believe that both of my best friends are officially engaged to their love of life!” She finished the sentence, and pulled Cassandra into a tight, fierce hug, whispering in her ear. “I’m so happy for you. You deserve this. All of it.”
The genuine, emotional reaction from her best friend brought sudden tears to Cassandra’s eyes. “Thanks, Daisy!” She whispered back, hugging her tightly.
This left Killian with the men. He moved to the coffee pot, his posture deceptively casual. Julian hopped off the counter and ambled over.
“So,” Julian began, his voice low. “The Queen of the Night, huh? I assume her majesty performed to expectations?” His tone was full of innuendo.
Killian poured a black coffee, his movements deliberate. “The flower was beautiful.” He said, his voice a low, neutral rumble.
Juan joined them, a faint smile on his face. “I think he’s asking about the other rare and beautiful thing you were with all night, amigo.”
Levi abandoned his espresso machine and sauntered over, clapping Killian on the shoulder. “Come on, King. Details. Was it everything you dreamed of? Was there… celestial bodies aligning?” He winked.
Killian slowly turned his head, his green eyes sweeping over the three of them. The look was cool, assessing. “The only detail you need to know.” Killian said, his voice dropping to a deadly calm. “Is that she is happy. And if any of you do anything to compromise that happiness, including making her blush so hard she spontaneously combusts, we will have a problem. Are we clear?”
The message was received. Julian held up his hands in surrender. Juan nodded, his expression turning respectfully serious. Levi just chuckled, utterly unabashed. “Crystal, boss. Protective mode: activated.”
The moment was broken by Adrian’s small, curious voice from the table. He was looking at Cassandra, his head tilted. “Your face is the same color as my red crayon, Sissy. Did you and Killian get sunburned on the balcony?”
A fresh wave of laughter, this time more gentle and good-natured, went through the room. Cassandra buried her face in her hands with a groan, but she was laughing too.
Killian immediately left his post and went to the boy, crouching down beside his chair. “No sunburn, buddy.” He said, his voice gentle. “Cassie is just feeling very… warm and happy today.”
Alexander, from the couch, called out, his voice laced with gentle teasing. “I don’t think they were fighting, buddy.” He rubbed Isabella’s belly affectionately. “Seems like it’s a good week for happy news around here. First our little news, now this. What’s next, Cassie? You got any big announcements to make?” He waggled his eyebrows playfully.
Isabella elbowed him gently. “Alex! Don’t you dare put that pressure on her!” But she was laughing.
Daisy, still holding Cassandra’s hand, squeezed it. “Alright, enough!” She declared, shooting a mock-stern look around the room. “You’re all going to short-circuit her.”
She led a still-blushing Cassandra to the table. “Levi, if that contraption doesn’t produce coffee in the next thirty seconds, I’m revoking your kitchen privileges.”
Levi gave a dramatic salute. “On it, Captain.” He turned back to the machine with renewed, comical intensity.
As they all settled around the large table— Julian pulling out a chair for Elena, Juan doing the same for Lena, Alexander fussing over Isabella’s comfort— the noise level rose again. Conversations overlapped: plans for the day, jokes, the easy rhythm of a family at ease.
Throughout it all, Killian’s hand found Cassandra’s under the table. His thumb stroked slow, calming circles on her palm. A silent message. I’m here. They’re ours. This is ours.
She squeezed back, her heart so full she thought it might burst. She looked around at her friends— her family. Elena and Julian stealing glances, Juan and Lena in their quiet understanding, Alexander doting on a glowing Isabella, and Levi, still wrestling with the espresso machine under Daisy’s fond, exasperated gaze.
The blushes and the teasing were a small price to pay for this. For the messy, loud, loving reality of their future, finally beginning.
