"What have you DONE?!" Alex's mom shrieked, her face red with anger. She pushed through the crowd of confused wedding guests, her voice cutting through the stunned silence like a knife.
Alex stood frozen, hand in hand with Ethan, still reeling from their dramatic escape. He knew this was coming, but he wasn't prepared for the full force of his mother's fury.
"Mom, please," Alex began, but she cut him off.
"Please?! You've humiliated us! In front of everyone we know!" she cried, gesturing wildly at the gaping onlookers. "Your father is going to have a heart attack!"
"Mrs. Rivera, with all due respect," Ethan interjected, trying to diffuse the situation, "your son and I are in love. We couldn't go through with a marriage that wasn't right."
Ethan's words seemed to fuel the fire. "You!" she spat, pointing a finger at Ethan. "This is all your fault! You turned my son gay!"
Ethan flinched, and Alex felt a surge of protectiveness. "Mom, that's not true! I've always been this way. Ethan just helped me realize it."
"Realize what? That you're going to throw your life away?" Her voice cracked with emotion. "We had such plans for you, Alex. A good marriage, a successful career, grandchildren!"
"Mom, those aren't my dreams!" Alex pleaded. "I want to be with Ethan. That's all that matters."
Suddenly, a new voice joined the fray. "Ethan? What is the meaning of this?"
Ethan's dad, Mr. Carter, pushed his way through the crowd, his face a mask of shock and disappointment. Behind him, Ethan's mom looked like she was about to burst into tears.
"Dad, I can explain," Ethan said, his voice tight.
"Explain? Explain how you've been lying to us for years?" Mr. Carter's voice boomed. "We thought you were happy. We thought you were finally settling down!"
"I was never happy, Dad," Ethan confessed. "Not until now."
"So, you're choosing him over your family?" Mr. Carter demanded, his eyes fixed on Alex.
"It's not a choice, Dad," Ethan said, his voice firm. "It's who I am."
Mrs. Carter stepped forward, her eyes filled with tears. "Ethan, honey, we just want you to be happy. But this… this isn't right."
"Mom, please try to understand," Ethan begged. "I love Alex. More than anything."
"Love? Is that what you call it?" Mr. Carter scoffed. "This is just a phase. You'll come to your senses eventually."
"It's not a phase!" Alex shouted, his anger finally boiling over. "We're in love, and we're not ashamed of it!"
The two families glared at each other, a battle of wills raging in the middle of the street. The wedding guests murmured amongst themselves, unsure of what to do.
"We don't need your approval," Alex declared, grabbing Ethan's hand. "We're leaving."
"Where do you think you're going?" Alex's mom challenged.
"Away from all this negativity," Alex retorted. "We're going to build a life together, whether you like it or not."
With that, Alex and Ethan turned and walked away, leaving their families behind. The weight of their disapproval hung heavy in the air, but Alex refused to let it crush him. He had Ethan, and that was all that mattered.
As they walked, Alex couldn't shake the feeling that they were being watched. He glanced over his shoulder, but the street was empty except for the dwindling crowd of wedding guests.
"Do you feel like someone's watching us?" Alex asked, his voice low.
Ethan frowned. "I don't know. I'm just trying to process everything that's happening."
They walked in silence for a while, their footsteps echoing on the pavement. The sky was darkening, and a cool breeze swept through the streets.
"Where should we go?" Ethan asked, breaking the silence.
Alex shrugged. "I don't know. Anywhere but here."
They reached Ethan's car and climbed in, relief washing over them as they closed the doors. Ethan started the engine, and they pulled away from the curb, leaving the chaos behind.
As they drove, Alex pulled out his phone. He had a message from Sophia.
"I'm proud of you," it read. "Follow your heart. I'll be okay."
Tears welled up in Alex's eyes. Sophia was an amazing person. He was so lucky to have her in his life, even if they weren't meant to be together.
He sent her a quick reply: "Thank you, Sophia. You're the best."
He turned off his phone and leaned back in his seat, letting out a long sigh. They were free. Finally, truly free.
But as they drove further and further away, Alex couldn't shake the feeling that something was wrong. The air was thick with tension, and the silence was deafening.
"Ethan, are you okay?" Alex asked, reaching out to touch his arm.
Ethan flinched. "I don't know, Alex," he said, his voice strained. "I can't help but feel like we've made a huge mistake."
"What do you mean?" Alex asked, his heart sinking.
"I mean… what if my parents are right?" Ethan said, his voice barely above a whisper. "What if this is just a phase? What if we're not meant to be together?"
Alex's blood ran cold. "Don't say that, Ethan," he pleaded. "We are meant to be together. I know it."
But Ethan didn't seem convinced. He stared straight ahead, his face pale and drawn.
"I'm scared, Alex," he confessed. "I'm scared of what the future holds."
"We'll face it together," Alex said, squeezing his hand. "We always do."
But as he said the words, Alex couldn't help but feel a sense of unease. Something was coming. He could feel it in his bones.
Suddenly, a pair of headlights appeared in the rearview mirror, gaining on them quickly. Alex glanced at Ethan, who looked just as alarmed.
"Who is that?" Alex asked, his voice trembling.
Ethan shook his head. "I don't know. But they're driving like maniacs."
The car behind them swerved erratically, flashing its high beams. It was clear they were being followed.
"Speed up, Ethan!" Alex urged. "Get us out of here!"
Ethan slammed on the gas, and the car lurched forward. But the other car was faster. It stayed right on their tail, its headlights blinding them.
"They're trying to run us off the road!" Alex exclaimed, his heart pounding.
Ethan gripped the steering wheel, his knuckles white. He weaved in and out of traffic, trying to shake their pursuer.
But it was no use. The other car was relentless. It rammed into their back bumper, sending them swerving out of control.
"Hang on!" Ethan yelled, struggling to maintain control of the vehicle.
The car skidded across the road, heading straight for the guardrail. Alex braced himself for impact.
With a deafening crash, they slammed into the guardrail, the car spinning violently. Alex's head hit the window, and everything went black. Alex woke up with a gasp, his head throbbing.
He was trapped in the mangled wreckage of the car, the smell of gasoline filling the air. He looked around wildly, searching for Ethan. But he was gone. The driver's seat was empty. "Ethan!" Alex cried, his voice hoarse.
"Ethan, where are you?" A figure emerged from the shadows, walking slowly toward the car. It was Sara, her eyes burning with rage. In her hand, she held a gun. "Hello, Alex," she said, her voice dripping with venom. "It's time to finish what I started."
