Chapter 58 The Queen’s Awakening
The world was quiet around them.
No monsters, no shadows—only the soft rustle of leaves and the early morning breeze brushing through the clearing.
But Kael heard none of it.
His attention was entirely on Lina’s hand.
Because it had just moved.
He froze.
“Lina?” he whispered, leaning closer, barely daring to breathe.
Her fingers curled again—weakly, tremulously, but with unmistakable intent.
Cassian’s eyes snapped open from where he leaned against the tree.
“She’s waking up.”
Aric practically jumped toward them. “Her pulse is strengthening—Kael, talk to her. She responds to your voice more than anything.”
Kael slid his hand along her cheek, thumb brushing gently beneath her eye.
“Little flame,” he whispered, voice breaking, “come back to me.”
Her eyelashes fluttered.
Kael’s heart slammed painfully against his chest.
“Lina?”
A small sound escaped her lips.
Barely a breath.
Barely a syllable.
But enough.
“Kael…”
He exhaled shakily, his forehead dropping to hers.
“Thank the gods…”
She blinked slowly, her vision adjusting—blurry shapes turning into faces, colors sharpening, light stabilizing.
Her gaze found Kael first.
Of course it did.
Even half-conscious, her soul always looked for him.
“Hey…” she breathed.
Kael laughed—a soft, broken sound—and cradled her face between his hands.
“Don’t ever do that again.”
She frowned weakly. “Do what?”
“Die. Almost die. Burn out your soul. Explode a monster. Any of it.”
A tiny smile curved her lips.
“I’ll try.”
Cassian snorted weakly. “That’s a lie. She’s absolutely going to do it again.”
Kael shot his brother a lethal look.
Cassian held up a shaking hand. “What? She’s clearly the powerful one now.”
Lina tried to sit up.
Kael immediately supported her waist, pulling her gently against his chest.
“No, no—slowly.”
Her fingers curled into his shirt.
“Are you hurt?” she whispered, voice trembling.
Kael froze.
“I’m not the one who exploded a demon-god.”
“That’s not what I asked,” she murmured.
He swallowed.
She was barely awake and she was still worried about him.
“Nothing serious,” he muttered.
Cassian wheezed, “Translation: he’s bleeding internally but refuses to admit it.”
Kael growled. “Cassian—shut up.”
Riven raised a hand. “I support Cassian’s honesty.”
Yara elbowed him hard.
“Not the time.”
Aric crouched beside Lina, examining her with slow, careful magic.
“How do you feel?” he asked.
Lina inhaled deeply, winced, then whispered:
“Like someone lit my spine on fire… and then dropped a mountain on me.”
Aric nodded. “That sounds about right.”
“What happened?” she asked, looking at each of them.
Kael tightened his arm around her.
“You saved us. You awakened the Heart.”
Lina blinked. “The… what?”
Aric lifted the burned parchment fragment.
“The Valerius Heart. A power only known in legends. A queen’s power.”
Lina stared at him as if the words didn’t fit inside her skull.
“I’m… not a queen.”
Aric swallowed.
“Lina… you are. The last of your bloodline. And the Heart responded to you completely.”
Riven leaned in whispering loudly, “We serve royalty now. Should we bow? I can bow. I bow nicely.”
Yara slapped him again. “Stop it!”
Kael ignored them all.
His forehead touched Lina’s temple as he whispered:
“Title or no title… you’re still mine. And I’m still yours.”
Her cheeks flushed softly.
“And you nearly died,” she murmured back.
“You nearly died first.”
They stared at each other with raw intensity.
Cassian fake-coughed. “If we’re done, can someone help me up? I think my soul is leaking.”
Aric ran back to Cassian. “Your soul is not leaking—stop saying that!”
THE TRIBE ARRIVES
The sound of snapping branches echoed through the clearing.
Kael stiffened instantly, pulling Lina closer.
His eyes ignited with a faint gold shimmer.
Riven drew a dagger.
Yara notched an arrow.
Cassian groaned but sat up straighter.
Aric whispered, “Relax—it’s not an enemy.”
Figures emerged through the trees.
Dozens of them.
Wolves—some in human form, some half-shifted—wearing the markings of Kael’s tribe.
The warriors, scouts, and elders Kael had left behind for safety.
The moment they saw him—
They dropped to one knee.
A united, thunderous gesture of respect.
Kael froze.
Lina looked up at him with wide eyes.
Riven whispered, “Oh. Wow. They’re actually kneeling.”
One of the elders, a weathered man with silver hair, stepped forward.
“Alpha,” he said, bowing his head deeply.
“We felt the surge. The light. The shadow breaking. We followed it.”
His eyes lifted to Kael.
“To you.”
Kael swallowed.
Another warrior stepped forward.
“And to her.”
He looked directly at Lina—still in Kael’s arms, still glowing slightly with leftover power.
Elders bowed again.
“To the Valerius Flame.”
Lina’s breath caught.
Kael tightened his grip protectively.
“She’s not a symbol,” Kael growled. “She’s a person. My mate.”
The elder nodded respectfully.
“We know. And we honor her as such.”
Lina’s eyes widened.
“M-mate…?”
Kael froze.
Cassian facepalmed loudly. “Gods above… you didn’t tell her yet?”
Kael’s cheeks actually colored.
A rare sight.
“I was going to,” he muttered.
“When?” Cassian shot back. “After the next life-threatening battle?”
Kael ignored him and turned to Lina.
“You and I… we bonded the moment you followed me into that forest.”
His thumb brushed her cheek.
“Magic only confirmed what my wolf already decided.”
Her lips parted.
“Kael…”
His forehead pressed to hers.
“You’re mine. And I’m yours. If you want it.”
Lina’s heart soared—and ached at the same time.
“I… I do want it. I’ve wanted it for a long time.”
Kael exhaled shakily, drawing her tighter against him.
But the elders were not finished.
The silver-haired one stepped forward solemnly.
“Alpha Kael Valerius,” he said, surprising them both with the use of Kael’s full lineage name.
“We felt the Ascension. You rose to a level no Alpha has reached in centuries.”
He bowed deeper.
“Our tribe recognizes you as the Ascended Alpha of Light.”
Kael stiffened.
Lina stared at him in shock.
Aric murmured, “Kael… that’s a title only legends held…”
Cassian smirked. “Look at you. A glowing girlfriend and a god-tier promotion.”
Kael shot him a look before turning back to the tribe.
“I accept the title,” he said quietly, “on one condition.”
The elder nodded. “Name it.”
Kael lifted Lina gently.
“That she is honored. Protected. Treated as my equal.”
The entire tribe nodded.
“As you command, Alpha.”
Lina flushed deeply.
Kael looked down at her, brushing his nose against her hair.
“You’re safe now, little flame.”
Emotion tightened her throat.
But something dark flickered behind the trees.
A whisper of movement.
A shift of shadow.
Lina felt it before anyone else.
Her hand tightened on Kael’s arm.
“Kael,” she whispered, voice trembling,
“the creature is dead… but something else is still out there.”
Kael’s eyes snapped up, golden and deadly.
Aric froze.
Cassian tensed.
Yara drew her bow.
Riven whispered, “Please don’t tell me it’s another monster. I just sat down.”
Lina shook her head slowly.
“No… not a monster.”
Her voice softened, eyes narrowing at the forest edge.
“A person.”
