Chapter 55 Light Devours Shadow

Chapter 55 Light Devours Shadow
The creature stumbled backward, its massive form flickering erratically as Kael and Lina stepped toward it—
not running,
not rushing,
simply walking
with the calm certainty of a storm that knows nothing can stop it.

Their combined aura lit the ruins in sweeping waves of white-gold and silver.
Cracked stones glowed beneath their feet.
The very air trembled.

The creature let out a distorted roar.

“THE BONDED FLAME CANNOT EXIST—YOU ARE A MYTH—A LIE—”

Kael tightened his grip on Lina, keeping her securely against his chest.

“We’re very real,” he growled.

Lina’s fingers curled into his shirt, her gaze steadying.
She was pale, trembling, but her core—her magic—burned with renewed clarity.

“Kael,” she whispered softly, “put me down.”

His jaw clenched.
“No.”

“You need both hands.”

He looked at her—eyes wild with fear and love.
“I won’t risk you falling again.”

She cupped his cheek gently.

“I’m not falling. Not anymore. You pulled me back.”

Their foreheads touched for a single heartbeat.

Then Kael exhaled, slow and pained—
and set her gently on her feet.

Their hands stayed linked, their fingers interlaced.

The bond pulsed again.

The creature flinched.

THE CREATURE’S DESPERATION

Its wings expanded fully, shadows dripping like black fire.
It slammed one wing into the ground, creating a shockwave that sent Yara, Riven, and Aric stumbling backward.

Cassian skidded across the rubble, coughing up blood.

The creature roared:

“I WILL CONSUME THE GIRL FIRST—THEN THE ALPHA—THEN EVERYTHING—”

It lunged.

Not with brute force.
With strategy.

Its body split—
shadows peeling away into three massive phantoms, each sprinting toward the center of the ruins from different angles.

Aric gasped.
“It’s dividing its soul-energy! Kael—Lina—be careful!”

Lina lifted her hands—
silver rings forming in the air—

But her knees buckled.

Kael’s arms slipped around her waist instantly.

“I’ve got you.”

She nodded weakly, eyes burning with determination.

“We do this together.”

THE FIRST PHANTOM

The leftmost shadow-beast pounced.

Kael let go of Lina and flashed forward—
faster than the human eye could track—
tearing the phantom apart with his claws in one brutal strike.

The phantom exploded into smoke.

Kael spun, eyes locking onto the second one.

THE SECOND PHANTOM

This one aimed for Lina.

Cassian leapt in front of her, raising a weak silver shield.

The shadow crashed into it—
shattering the shield—
hurling Cassian backward into the stones.

“Cassian!” Lina cried.

But the shadow-phantom was already lunging at her again.

Lina threw her hands up—
silver light crackling—

Kael blurred across the battlefield, ramming into the phantom mid-air and slamming it into the ground.

He ripped it in half.

White-gold fire incinerated it instantly.

But Kael staggered afterward, chest heaving, breath ragged.

The Ascension was burning through him.

Lina ran to him, grabbing his arm.

“Kael, you’re pushing too hard—”

“It won’t touch you,” he whispered through clenched teeth.
“Not even once.”

THE FINAL PHANTOM

The third phantom didn’t attack immediately.

It merged back into the creature’s core.

The creature rose to its full, horrific height—
wings stretching across the ruins—
soul-furnace burning brighter than before—

And for the first time…

It looked afraid.

“YOU SHOULD NOT EXIST,” it hissed.

Lina squeezed Kael’s hand.

“Let’s show him why we do.”

They stepped forward together.

KAEL’S FINAL STRIKE… FAILS

Kael summoned everything.

White-gold flames whirled around him, coiling along his arms like living serpents of light.

He launched himself upward—
straight toward the furnace in the creature’s chest—
intending to tear it out with his bare hands.

He reached it—
slammed his claws inside—

And—

It didn’t break.

Kael froze, eyes wide.

The creature laughed—low and cruel.

“FOOLISH ALPHA.
YOU ARE LIGHT.
I FEED ON LIGHT.”

Shadow tendrils erupted from the furnace, wrapping violently around Kael’s arms and chest.

He roared in agony as the shadows seared into him.

“KAEL!” Lina choked, sprinting toward him.

The creature dragged Kael closer, bending him toward its maw.

Cassian pushed himself upright despite the pain.

“KAEL—FIGHT IT—!”

But Kael’s strength faltered.
His flames dimmed under the creature’s consumption.

He was being drained.

Killed.

Lina screamed, voice breaking:

“KAEL!”

And something inside her snapped.

THE VALERIUS HEART AWAKENS

Silver light burst beneath Lina’s feet, forming spirals of ancient runes that pulsed outward like ripples in water.

Aric gasped.
“No… that’s… that’s impossible—”

Lina didn’t hear him.

Her eyes turned pure silver-white.

The air around her stilled.

Time seemed to slow.

The faint heartbeat of the Valerius bloodline pulsed deep within her chest—

thud
thud
THUD

And then—

It answered.

A second heartbeat pulsed in her soul—
older, deeper, stronger—

The dormant Valerius Heart awakened.

Lina’s voice—fierce, steady, unrecognizable—echoed through the ruins.

“Let him go.”

She lifted her hand.

The silver runes exploded into pillars of light—
rising into the sky—
locking around the creature like chains.

The shadows binding Kael sizzled and snapped apart.

The creature shrieked, recoiling violently.

Kael dropped to the ground, gasping, clutching his chest.

Lina ran to him, kneeling beside him, touching his face.

His voice trembled.

“Lina… your eyes…”

Her silver-white gaze softened.

“Kael. I’m right here.”

He reached for her hand.

“I feel you… everywhere.”

She smiled weakly.

“Good. Because you’re not dying today.”

Behind them—

The creature roared in terror.

Because Lina wasn’t done.

She stood slowly, raising both hands—

Silver light spiraling into a sphere of blinding radiance over her palms.

Kael stared in awe.

Cassian whispered:

“She awakened the Heart…
The ancient Valerius ability…”

Aric’s voice shook.

“She’s no longer just a Valerius heir.
She’s the key.”

The creature stumbled back.

Lina stepped forward.

Silver fire swirling around her like wings.

Her voice was steady:

“You touched my soul.
You hurt the people I love.
Now you face the consequences.”

The next strike would end everything.
