Chapter 53 The Alpha of Light
The battlefield held its breath.
Kael stood in front of Lina—bleeding, shaking, glowing with an unstable white-gold fire that wrapped around him like living lightning.
The air vibrated around him, warping from the force of his rising power.
The creature—huge, monstrous, crowned in shadow—took one slow, hesitant step back.
It could feel it.
Everyone could feel it.
Kael was no longer just an Alpha.
He was something else.
Something ancient.
Something the creature had not expected—and could not control.
Cassian whispered hoarsely, awe and fear twisting through his voice:
“He’s… Ascended. Fully. Kael… you’re—”
Kael didn’t hear him.
His eyes were locked on the creature with lethal, unbreakable focus—
eyes glowing like two burning suns.
The monster snarled and hurled a massive shadow-wave toward him—
CRASH—
It exploded against Kael’s chest—
—
—
and vanished like smoke hitting a wall of light.
Kael didn’t even blink.
The creature froze.
Aric exhaled sharply.
“Oh gods… his aura—look—”
Kael took one slow step forward.
The ground beneath him cracked in a perfect circular pattern, golden light spilling out of the fractures like molten metal.
The creature’s hollow eyes flickered.
It was afraid.
Riven let out a shaky laugh.
“I have never—EVER—seen a monster get scared before. This is amazing.”
Yara elbowed him. “Shut up and stay behind something!”
Kael lifted one clawed hand.
White-gold fire spiraled around his fingers like a living storm.
The creature spread its wings, roaring in desperation, and lunged—
Kael vanished.
Reappeared in front of it—
—and slammed his glowing hand directly into the creature’s chest.
BOOM.
A shockwave erupted outward so violently Yara and Riven were thrown to the ground.
Aric’s runes shattered.
Dust exploded into the sky.
The creature staggered back, chest burning, half its ribcage disintegrating.
Kael stood before it, unmoving.
A god of light.
A wolf of fire.
A storm wearing the shape of a man.
The creature screeched, furious:
“YOU CANNOT DESTROY ME—”
Kael’s voice cut through the ruins like thunder.
“Watch me.”
He sprinted forward—
but not as Kael had moved before.
This was faster.
Sharper.
Impossible.
The very air ripped apart behind him.
He collided with the creature again, claws tearing through shadow, ripping pieces of corrupted magic from its body.
The creature shrieked, flailing violently, but Kael didn’t let go.
He tore off its left wing.
BOOM—
It exploded into black dust.
He tore through its right side.
CRACK—
Bones snapped like brittle branches.
Cassian stared, trembling.
“That’s… Kael?”
His voice cracked.
“That power—Aric—it’s going to burn him from the inside—”
Aric swallowed hard.
“Yes. If it continues like this… he’ll break.”
Cassian clenched his fists.
“He’s doing it for her.”
Aric nodded.
“He always would.”
LINA MOVES
A soft sound escaped Lina’s lips.
Cassian spun toward her.
“So did you hear that?!”
She twitched again.
Her eyelashes fluttered.
Aric leaned over her quickly, hands already glowing.
“Her soul is coming back. Slowly—but it’s returning.”
Cassian grabbed her hand.
“Come on, Lina… Kael needs you. Follow him. Follow your bond.”
Her fingers curled weakly around his.
A spark of silver light glowed at her chest.
Aric gasped softly.
“Yes… yes, that’s it…”
THE CREATURE STRIKES BACK
The creature, desperate and enraged, twisted violently and smashed its claws into the ground, launching a wave of shadow straight at Kael.
Kael stood his ground.
The shadow hit him—
—and dissolved.
Riven shouted, “That’s not even fair!”
Yara nocked another rune arrow. “Don’t complain. Shoot something!”
But the creature wasn’t done.
It reached deep inside its own chest—
grabbed a piece of the burning soul-furnace—
and devoured it.
Its hollow eyes ignited with a sickening white flame.
Aric’s face drained of color.
“Oh no. No, no, no—it’s cannibalizing itself. It’s sacrificing its own core—Kael, MOVE!”
The creature’s body expanded—
growing larger—
more distorted—
more powerful—
A second Ascension.
Cassian staggered to his feet.
“He can’t fight that alone.”
Aric grabbed his arm.
“You’re too weak—”
“She needs me,” Cassian said with quiet determination.
“He needs me.”
He tore free of Aric’s grip—
And ran directly toward Kael.
THE BROTHERS AGAINST THE BEAST
Kael was preparing another strike when Cassian grabbed his arm.
Kael spun, snarling—
but froze when he saw who it was.
Cassian met his blazing, terrifying gaze without flinching.
“Kael.”
He stepped closer, voice shaking but firm.
“You’re killing yourself.”
Kael’s flames flickered—just slightly.
Cassian pressed on.
“Lina’s alive. She’s coming back. But she needs you alive too. You hear me? She needs you.”
Kael’s jaw clenched, the beast inside him struggling to pull away.
Cassian cupped his brother’s face with shaking hands.
“Don’t lose yourself. Not now. Not when she’s fighting to return.”
Kael’s breathing slowed.
The white-gold flicker steadied.
A single word escaped him—barely audible, raw with agony.
“…Lina.”
Cassian nodded.
“Yes. Lina.”
The creature roared behind them.
Cassian turned, placing himself beside Kael.
“You’re not alone, brother. Not again.”
The creature charged.
Kael’s eyes ignited brighter than ever before.
Cassian’s silver aura flared at his side.
The last stand began.
