Chapter 44 Into the Tether
Cassian stood at the edge of the barrier like a broken monument.
His body perfectly still.
Too still.
Only the shadows crawling beneath his skin betrayed movement — like veins pulsing with darkness.
Lina’s breath hitched.
Kael stepped in front of her, body going rigid, a low growl rumbling in his throat.
Not fear.
Not anger.
Recognition.
Pain.
Hope twisted into something sharp.
Aric lifted his hands, palms glowing faintly.
“We begin now. There won’t be another opportunity.”
Riven twirled his daggers. “We’ll handle the creature’s tantrum if it tries anything.”
Yara nocked an arrow, aiming at Cassian’s heart.
“I’ll hold him at the barrier. Just say the word.”
Kael clasped Lina’s hand.
“Stay behind me until Aric says otherwise.”
Lina squeezed his fingers.
“I’m not letting go.”
Kael looked into her eyes — golden, fierce, terrified in a way only someone who loved too deeply could be.
“You don’t leave me again,” he whispered.
“I won’t.”
The barrier shimmered, reacting to their merged magic.
The creature felt it.
The forest darkened.
Cassian stepped closer — not walking.
Sliding.
Dragging reality with him.
Yara tightened her bowstring.
Riven muttered, “Well that’s horrifying.”
Aric raised his voice, urgent and sharp.
“Kael, Lina — stand in the circle. Touch the heartstone. When I open the tether, it will appear like a window. Step through it together.”
Kael pulled Lina with him.
Their fingers intertwined, anchored.
The moment their palms touched the heartstone, light flared beneath them — silver for her, gold for him, spiraling upward like interlocking flames.
Cassian stopped moving.
His head twitched, snapping toward them.
The creature’s voice seeped through his lips:
“So.
You wish to trespass in my realm.”
Kael’s wolf snarled.
“We’re coming for him.”
“I think not.”
Cassian lifted his hand—
And the barrier shook.
A thunderous crack tore through the ruins.
The creature slammed its power against the shield again.
And again.
And again.
The light dimmed under each blow.
“Yara! Riven!” Aric shouted.
“HOLD THE PERIMETER!”
Riven lunged forward, slashing the air where Cassian pressed against the barrier — his blades met nothing but shadow, but the distraction slowed the cracks spreading across the surface.
Yara fired arrow after arrow infused with light magic, each one striking the barrier itself to reinforce its structure.
Still — the creature pushed harder.
Lina wavered.
Her magic flickered painfully.
Kael immediately cupped her face, forcing her gaze to his.
“Hey.”
His voice was a soft command.
“I’m right here. Focus on me. Only me.”
Her breath steadied.
Aric slammed his hands into the ground.
The circle erupted in light.
The heartstone vibrated violently — the air above it tearing open, folding back on itself until a swirling, shimmering whirlpool of darkness and glittering threads formed.
“The tether!” Aric cried.
“It’s open!”
The creature shrieked through Cassian — an ear-splitting sound that shook the forest.
“NO.”
Cassian slammed into the barrier once more — the cracks spiderwebbing wider.
Aric yelled, “NOW! Step into the tether before it collapses!”
Kael grabbed Lina’s hand and pulled her toward the swirling tear.
Lina took a breath—
But Cassian lunged.
Shadow exploded from his arm.
A claw of pure darkness ripped across the barrier—
Straight toward Lina.
Kael roared, shifting mid-movement — half-wolf, half-man — and slammed into the barrier with his shoulder, pouring his magic into it.
The barrier ignited with blinding gold-white light.
The shadow claws halted a hair’s breadth from Lina’s face.
Kael snarled toward the creature.
“If you touch her, I swear I will tear your world apart.”
The creature hissed through Cassian.
“Then follow me into it.”
Kael tightened his grasp on Lina’s hand.
“Together,” she whispered.
“Together,” he breathed back.
And with one unified leap—
They stepped into the tether.
THE TETHER
There was no falling.
No ground.
No up.
No down.
Just a rush of cold wind and flashing memories — not theirs — rushing past them in streaks of silver and black.
The air tasted like old grief.
Like fear buried deep.
Lina’s hand trembled in Kael’s.
He pulled her closer, wrapping an arm around her waist.
“I’ve got you,” he whispered.
The darkness parted.
They landed on something solid but shifting — like a floor made of fog.
The world twisted around them.
Shapes formed.
Faded.
Formed again.
A child’s laughter.
A silver-eyed boy running through the woods.
Two brothers sparring with wooden blades.
Kael bleeding from a scraped knee.
Cassian hugging him and saying:
“It’s okay, little brother. I’ve got you.”
Kael swallowed hard.
Pain flickered across his face.
Lina tightened her grip.
“We’re close,” she whispered.
The fog thickened, swallowing the memory.
Suddenly—
A figure appeared ahead.
Tall.
Slender.
Half-shadow, half-light.
Cassian.
But not the twisted version outside the barrier.
This one looked lost.
Small.
Dimmed.
His eyes were fogged.
Empty.
Kael froze.
“Cassian…”
His brother’s head lifted slowly.
Recognition flickered — faint, fragile.
“Kael…?”
The voice was soft.
Human.
Hurting.
Kael took a step forward—
but the fog rippled violently.
Lina grabbed his arm.
“Careful. It’s unstable.”
Cassian’s face contorted in fear.
“Kael… don’t… don’t come closer,” he whispered, voice breaking.
“He’s here.”
The world trembled.
A deep, monstrous voice rolled through the tether.
“You should not be here.”
Lina shoved Kael behind her, instinct blazing.
The fog tore apart—
revealing a massive, looming shadow form with burning white eyes.
The creature.
Fully present.
It towered over them, its body shifting like smoke and blood in the void.
Lina’s heart slammed.
Kael shifted halfway instantly, fangs bared, claws extended.
Cassian looked terrified.
The creature leaned close—
“You dare steal what is mine?”
Kael snarled.
“He was never yours.”
Lina stepped forward, magic rising like fire under her skin.
“We’re here for Cassian,” she said, voice steady.
“Not for you.”
The creature tilted its monstrous head.
“Then come take him.”
The fog trembled violently — and the tether snapped into an arena of memory-shards and shadow, with Cassian trapped between Kael and the creature.
Kael reached for his brother desperately.
“Cassian—come to me—come on—just take my hand—”
Cassian lifted his trembling fingers—
But the creature’s shadow lashed out and ripped him backward.
Cassian screamed.
Kael roared in agony.
Lina felt the bond flare painfully.
The creature’s voice echoed through the tether—
“If you want him…
you will fight me for his soul.”
Kael stepped forward, eyes burning like suns.
“I will.”
Lina moved beside him.
“We will.”
The creature lunged.
Darkness collapsed around them.
And the battle began.
