Chapter 37 The Pact Reforged

Chapter 37 The Pact Reforged
The center of the ancient Valerius circle pulsed faintly under the moonlight.

Carved stone, cracked by time but still humming with old power, formed a ring large enough for a wolf pack to gather in. The glyphs that once protected the valley were faint now—barely visible—but Lina felt every one of them vibrate beneath her feet.

Kael stood beside her, fingers intertwined with hers, grounding her with warmth even as the air grew colder.

Aric approached and placed a hand over the heartstone at the center of the circle.

“This is where your ancestors made their pact,” Aric murmured.
“Where they bound the rift.
Where they sealed the creature out.”

Lina swallowed. “And now I have to do it again.”

Aric nodded slowly.
“You are the last blood of Valerius. And now… you carry Kael’s strength too.”

Kael’s arm slid around her waist, pulling her closer.

“You’re not doing it alone.”

Aric hesitated before answering.
“When the magic rises, Kael… you must hold her. Anchor her to this world. She will feel the creature pulling her back.”

Kael’s grip tightened.

“Then I’ll hold her until I die.”

“Kael,” Lina whispered softly, turning to face him, “you’ll hold me because I’ll stay.”

His eyes softened with something fierce and fragile.
“Just don’t let go.”

“I won’t.”

They stepped into the center of the circle.

The moment Lina’s foot touched the heartstone, a tremor rippled through the ground. The glyphs flared to life—faint silver lines lighting up like veins beneath the earth.

Riven whistled low. “That’s either amazing or horrifying.”

“Both,” Yara muttered.

Aric raised his hands.

“Lina, close your eyes.”

She did.

“And now,” Aric continued, “call your magic.”

Lina inhaled slowly.

The power inside her—the one that had always felt like a trapped sun—stirred.
Hot.
Bright.
Alive.

“Gently,” Aric warned.
“Let it rise, but do not unleash it yet.”

Kael’s hands slid to her hips, steadying her, grounding her firmly against his chest.

“Breathe with me,” he whispered.

She did.

Slow.
Deep.
Together.

Her magic rose higher.

Silver light glowed faintly beneath her skin.

Kael felt it instantly—
his wolf reacting,
their merged bond flaring between them.

He pressed his forehead to the back of her shoulder, whispering,
“I’m here. I’ve got you.”

Her magic surged—
and the air shifted.

Yara’s head snapped up.
“Aric…”

Aric stiffened.
“Yes. I feel it.”

Riven stepped closer to the circle, blades drawn.
“What? What do you feel?”

Aric’s voice dropped to a grim whisper.

“The creature felt her magic.”

Lina’s eyes flew open, but Kael held her firmly in place.

“It’s okay,” he murmured.
“Focus on me. On us.”

But Lina felt it now—
a cold, foreign presence dragging across her magic like a claw.

Searching.
Reaching.
Calling her by a name she hadn’t heard in years.

Mine…

She gasped.
Kael felt the bond pulse in alarm.

“What is it?” he whispered, shifting closer.

“It’s calling me…” she breathed.
“It knows where we are.”

Kael snarled, voice breaking. “Lina, stay with me. Don’t listen—don’t let it in—”

Aric spoke urgently.
“Lina, keep going. That’s what it wants. The more you rise, the more desperate it becomes. The barrier will form naturally from the surge.”

The creature’s voice pressed harder—

Mine.
Come back.
Return to me.

Lina’s breath hitched. “Kael—”

He wrapped both arms around her, pulling her against him so tightly her feet lifted slightly off the ground.

“I’m here,” he whispered fiercely.
“I won’t let it take you.”

Her magic rose higher still.

Silver light flared around them like a growing storm.

The glyphs along the ground ignited—
circling them,
glowing brighter,
like veins of lightning waking up under the earth.

Riven gasped. “What in the gods—”

Yara stepped back. “The barrier’s reforming.”

But then—

A howl tore through the forest.

Not a wolf howl.

Not a creature’s howl.

Something in-between.

Kael’s blood froze.

Cassian.

He landed at the edge of the ruins in a blur of shadow and moonlight—tall, twisted, wrong, his eyes burning with silver-black fire.

Lina stiffened.

Kael growled so loudly the stones vibrated.

“Don’t look at him.”

But Cassian wasn’t looking at Kael.

He wasn’t looking at Aric.

He wasn’t looking at the others.

His gaze was locked solely on Lina.

“You glow,” Cassian murmured, voice a broken echo.
“You shine for the master.”

Kael pulled Lina behind him instantly.
“You will not touch her.”

Cassian tilted his head—jagged, unnatural.
“But she is calling him.”

Lina’s breath caught.

Cassian’s smile widened.
“He hears her.”

Kael snapped, “Lina, focus. Don’t let him disrupt you.”

Lina closed her eyes, heart pounding.
She pulled her magic inward, letting it rise like Aric taught.

The glyphs brightened further.

The stones hummed.

The air thickened with power---

And Cassian moved.

But Kael was faster.

He shifted mid-step—
half-wolf, half-man—
slamming into Cassian with force that cracked stone.

They collided hard.

Cassian snarled, shadows ripping from his claws like black mist.

Kael bared his fangs.

“You will not have her!”

They crashed through the pillars, each impact shaking dust from the ruins.

Lina gasped, magic wavering—

“Stay focused!” Aric shouted.
“You’re the key! Don’t falter or the breach will open!”

Lina swallowed her fear, hands shaking, and pulled the magic back under control.

Kael and Cassian fought only meters away—
two forces of nature colliding.
Shadow against fury.
Brother against brother.

Riven circled around them, blades flashing, Yara taking aim with her bow—neither daring to strike for fear of hitting Kael.

Cassian slammed Kael into a broken pillar.
Kael roared, shifting almost fully, golden eyes blazing.

“You’re not him!” Kael snarled.
“You’re not my brother!”

Cassian’s expression rippled, flickering with something like sadness—
then twisting into that wrong, empty smile again.

“I’ve come for her.”

Kael lunged again—
but Lina screamed his name.

“KAEL!”

Her magic surged violently, responding to her fear.

Aric shouted, “Lina—NO—keep it controlled—”

But it was too late.

The stones blazed.

The air tore open with a furious wound of light—

A fissure.
A breach.
The creature pushing through.

The ground shook violently.

Cassian stopped mid-fight, his head snapping toward the breach like a puppet pulled by invisible strings.

He whispered—

“He is coming.”

Kael spun back toward Lina, terror ripping through him.

“LINA—STOP—!”

Lina couldn’t.

The breach yawned open—

Silver light.
Black shadow.
Magic screaming.

And something… stepped through.

A shadowed limb.
A clawed hand.
The faint outline of a monstrous shape pressing into their world.

Lina staggered back.

Kael roared her name—

“LINA!”

Aric shouted—

“The creature is BREACHING—!”

Yara screamed—

“SHUT IT—SHUT IT—SHUT IT—”

And Lina, trembling, heart pounding, raised both her hands and—

Pulled every ounce of magic inside her into the circle.

The glyphs exploded with light.

The breach shuddered.

The creature’s hand lashed at the air—

Reaching for her.

Almost through.

Almost—

Lina screamed with every part of her soul—

And slammed the barrier shut.

A thunderous blast ripped through the ruins.

Light swallowed everything.

Cassian was thrown back into the trees.

Kael was hurled onto the stones.

Aric, Riven, and Yara shielded their faces from the shockwave.

And Lina—

Lina collapsed.

Silent.

Still.

Unmoving.

Kael scrambled to his knees, raw panic tearing through him as he crawled toward her.

“Lina—LINA—”

He gathered her into his arms, clutching her against his chest, trembling violently.

Her eyes were closed.

Too still.
Too quiet.

Kael pressed his forehead to hers, voice breaking into a shattered whisper—

“Please… please open your eyes… little wolf… don’t leave me… please—”

The barrier hum pulsed once… then flickered.

The night held its breath.

And Lina didn’t move.
