Chapter 31 Preparing for the Fire

Chapter 31 Preparing for the Fire
Night fell like a shroud over the ruined valley.

The old Valerius stones glowed faintly, responding to Lina’s presence, but the air hummed with something colder — anticipation, fear, destiny pressing close.

Kael hadn’t let go of her hand since they left the chamber.

Not once.

They sat near the edge of the ruins where a small campfire flickered between them and the dark.

Riven sharpened his blades mechanically.
Yara paced, restless.
Aric spoke in low, quiet tones with them, explaining what little he knew.

But Kael didn’t look at any of them.

His golden eyes were locked on Lina.

Every breath she took.
Every tremor of her fingers.
Every shift of her heartbeat.

“Kael,” she murmured, touching his arm. “You’re staring.”

“I’m making sure you’re real,” he said softly.
His voice cracked on the last word.

Lina’s chest tightened. “I’m not leaving.”

“You might,” he whispered.
And the fear in that sound — raw, trembling — made her throat burn.

She placed both hands on his shoulders. “Kael.”

He closed his eyes, exhaling shakily.

“Lina… tonight, that ritual might… it might…”
He couldn’t finish.

So she finished for him.
“It might kill me.”

He flinched.

She lifted his chin gently.
“Kael. Look at me.”

He did.

And she had never seen him look like this — like he was holding himself together with sheer force of will.

“You are the strongest wolf I know,” she whispered. “You fought the shadow. You faced the Council. You faced the rift. You faced me.”

“I wasn’t afraid of any of that,” he said.
“But I am terrified of losing you.”

Her breath shook.

She cupped his cheek. “Kael… I was marked as a child. I’ve lived with this my whole life. If this can free me—”

He grabbed her hand, pressing it against his heart.

“Don’t say it like freeing you is worth losing you.”

“It is,” she said softly.
“Kael, I can’t live with this thing inside me forever. I can’t be what it wants.”

“You’re not,” he said fiercely.
“You’re nothing like it. You’re good. You’re light.”

She leaned closer. “Not without you.”

His breath caught.

Riven whispered to Yara, “Should we… leave?”

Yara smacked him. “If you talk during this moment, I feed you to the shadow.”

Aric cleared his throat. “We should discuss the ritual.”

Kael shot him a death-glare but nodded stiffly.

Aric knelt beside the fire, drawing a circle in the dirt with a piece of old stone.

“The cleansing flame,” he said, “is not like ordinary fire. It’s ancient pact magic. It burns only what does not belong.”

Kael’s grip on Lina tightened. “Explain.”

Aric circled the fire with his finger. “Inside the flame, Lina’s Valerius magic will be laid bare. The creature’s mark will surface. If the flame recognizes her as the rightful heir, it will burn the mark out.”

“And if it doesn’t?” Kael said quietly.

Aric hesitated. “Then it will assume the marked magic is corruption. And burn it away.”

Lina swallowed. “Meaning me.”

Aric nodded solemnly.

Kael stood abruptly, pacing away, running a hand roughly through his hair.

“Heads up,” Riven murmured. “Alpha meltdown in progress.”

Yara whispered back, “Let him. He loves her too much to be calm.”

Kael returned after a moment, dropping to one knee in front of Lina.

He took her hands.

Both of them.
Like he was grounding himself, not her.

His voice was low, rough.
“If this flame hurts you, I will pull you out. I don’t care what the ritual demands.”

“Kael—”

“I need you to understand that,” he said fiercely. “If you scream, if you flinch, if you call for me— I’m ending it.”

Lina’s eyes softened. “You can’t. It has to finish or it’s pointless.”

He shook his head. “My wolf doesn’t care about logic.”

She leaned forward, pressing her forehead lightly against his. “Then trust me to fight.”

His breath caught.
“Always.”

For a long moment they stayed like that — close, breathing the same air, sharing the same fear.

Aric stood.

“It’s time,” he said quietly.
“The flame will answer only at midnight.”

The moon climbed higher.
Silver light washed over the ruins.

Yara and Riven extinguished the campfire and stepped back.

Aric took a deep breath and began tracing symbols in the dirt — ancient Valerius sigils that glowed faintly when Lina approached.

Lina exhaled shakily and stepped toward the ritual circle.

Kael followed a heartbeat later.

He didn’t ask permission.

He didn’t apologize.

He just took her hand and said,
“I’m going into that flame with you.”

Aric’s eyes widened. “Kael— you could—”

“I don’t care.”
Kael’s voice was quiet but unshakeable.
“She’s not doing this alone.”

The sigils glowed brighter.

The air thinned.

Lina’s heart pounded.

“Kael…” she whispered. “Whatever happens—”

“No.”
He stepped in front of her, cupping her face, eyes fierce and warm.
“Whatever happens, you come back to me.”

Her knees weakened.

But she nodded.
“Yes.”

Aric raised his hands.

The circle burst into silver fire — cool, bright, impossibly beautiful.

It beckoned.

Lina stepped forward.

Kael stepped with her.

Together, fingers intertwined, they crossed the threshold.

The flame rose—

Surrounding them.
Claiming them.
Searching Lina’s magic.
Testing Kael’s bond.

Her breath hitched—

And the mark inside her chest ignited with a searing, terrible heat.

She cried out.

Kael caught her instantly.

“Lina!”
His voice broke.
“I’ve got you— I’ve got you—”

The flame roared—

Silver, white, gold—

Climbing higher as the creature’s mark surged violently, fighting back.

Lina screamed.

Kael held her tighter, pulling her against him, whispering her name like a prayer.

The ritual had begun.

And there was no going back.
