Chapter 29 Into the Heartstone Below
The entrance to the heartstone chamber was exactly where Lina remembered it — beneath a fallen archway, half-swallowed by roots. But she had never descended it. She’d been a child when the attack came, too young to witness the inner pact.
The air grew colder as they approached the broken steps.
Older.
Heavier.
Kael moved in front of her instinctively. “I’ll go first.”
Aric stepped beside him. “No. I know this place. I’ll guide her.”
The growl that slipped from Kael wasn’t subtle.
“You’ll stay behind her,” he snapped. “You breathe wrong, I break your spine.”
Aric raised a brow. “You’re territorial.”
Kael didn’t deny it.
“I’m protective.”
“Possessive,” Aric corrected calmly.
“Of her, yes,” Kael said without shame.
Lina touched Kael’s arm gently. “Kael… it’s alright.”
His jaw flexed, but he nodded and moved aside just enough to let her lead while staying within inches of her.
Aric followed behind — close, but never too close.
Riven whispered to Yara, “Is it weird I kinda like when Kael gets jealous?”
Yara snorted. “You like pain.”
“Yeah,” Riven said thoughtfully, “that too.”
They descended the ancient steps, the stone cool beneath their boots. Faint runes glowed along the walls as Lina passed — reacting to her presence, her blood, her magic.
When she touched one, it pulsed warmly.
“The pact recognizes you,” Aric murmured.
Kael’s eyes flicked sharply to Aric, then to Lina’s hand. “What does it do?”
“It remembers,” Aric said simply. “Every Valerius who ever touched this stone left something behind.”
Lina swallowed. “What does it remember about me?”
Aric hesitated.
Kael stiffened. “Answer her.”
Aric exhaled. “It remembers the moment you were marked.”
Lina froze.
A faint tremor shook her fingers.
Kael was instantly in front of her, both hands cupping her face.
“Lina,” he whispered. “Look at me.”
Her breathing steadied at the sound of his voice.
“I’m here,” she whispered.
“I’m with you.”
Kael brushed her cheek with his thumb.
“And I’m not going anywhere.”
Their closeness would have turned into a kiss if a soft rumble hadn’t shaken the chamber.
Aric stepped forward. “We’re here.”
A massive circular door lay before them, carved into the stone. Thick cracks spidered across it, glowing faintly with silver light.
“The original heartstone seal,” Aric said. “It’s been weakened.”
Kael stepped between Lina and the door. “What do we do?”
Aric gestured toward Lina. “She must place her hand on the seal. The door will open only for Valerius blood.”
Kael grabbed Lina’s wrist gently. “Not alone.”
Aric nodded. “She won’t be. But be warned — the creature will know the moment the seal moves. It will reach for her.”
Kael’s wolf surged, eyes burning gold.
“Then I’ll break its hands.”
Riven whispered, “I’m kinda terrified and turned on.”
Yara smacked the back of his head. “Focus.”
Lina swallowed hard, stepping up to the great stone door.
Kael moved with her.
She lifted her hand…
slow…
steady…
and pressed her palm against the seal.
The chamber pulsed.
Once.
Twice.
Then the door glowed beneath her touch — bright silver fractures racing outward from her palm.
Lina gasped and stepped back, but Kael steadied her with an arm around her waist.
Aric watched with a tense, almost pained expression. “It recognizes you. And something else.”
Kael growled. “What something else?”
Aric’s gaze dropped to their intertwined hands.
“The bond,” he whispered. “It’s woven into her magic now.”
Kael’s breath hitched.
Lina’s heart stuttered.
Before either could respond—
The door cracked open with a deafening groan.
Cold air rushed out — not natural cold, but ancient cold, like air trapped beneath the earth since the day the pact was made.
The chamber beyond glowed faintly with silver patterns — a massive circle engraved into the floor, pulsing gently like a heartbeat.
Lina stepped forward, awe and dread twisting inside her.
“This is it,” Aric said quietly.
“The place where the Valerius line sealed the breach.”
Kael stayed glued to her side.
“Tell us what we need to do,” he said.
Aric gestured to the circle. “Lina must stand in the center.”
Kael’s grip tightened. “And what happens to her?”
Aric’s expression softened with grief. “She will see everything the pact witnessed. The truth of the creature. The moment her family fell. The moment she was marked.”
“Absolutely not,” Kael growled.
Lina turned to him. “Kael… it’s the only way to understand how to stop it.”
“No,” he snapped. “It could break you.”
“It won’t,” she whispered. “Not with you beside me.”
Kael’s eyes softened — painfully, beautifully.
He stepped close, pressing his forehead to hers.
“Lina… if you go into that circle, I’m going with you.”
Aric stiffened. “Kael— that’s forbidden. Only Valerius blood—”
But the circle glowed the moment Kael stepped near.
Aric froze.
“What—?”
Lina’s breath caught. “Kael… your magic…”
Kael looked down at their hands, realization dawning.
“The bond,” he murmured. “It linked me to your bloodline.”
Aric stared at him with something like disbelief.
“The pact accepts you. The land accepts you. The Valerius magic… accepts you.”
Kael didn’t look at Aric.
He looked only at Lina.
“I’m with you,” he whispered.
“In every realm. In every danger. In everything.”
Her chest tightened until it hurt.
She nodded. “Then we go together.”
They stepped into the circle.
Silver light flared.
Kael grabbed her hand with both of his.
And the moment their feet touched the center—
The chamber vanished.
The world exploded.
Light.
Shadow.
Screams.
The roar of the creature.
Her family’s voices.
The night of the attack.
Her father’s last words.
Lina’s knees buckled—
Kael caught her.
His arms locked around her as the vision swallowed them both.
And then—
A voice whispered behind them.
Not human.
Not wolf.
Not alive.
“Little wolf…”
Kael’s grip tightened violently.
“I’m here,” he whispered.
“I’m here.”
The vision deepened.
The truth waited.
And the creature, closer than ever, watched them step into its memories.
