Chapter 21 Dawn at the Alpha’s Side

Chapter 21 Dawn at the Alpha’s Side
Lina woke slowly, the world drifting back into focus in soft, warm pieces.

A heartbeat.
Steady.
Strong.
Right under her ear.

Warmth curled around her from behind — an arm around her waist, a large hand resting protectively on her stomach.

Kael.

She hadn’t meant to fall asleep again.
Certainly not wrapped in him like a second skin.

But his scent — cedar, pine, warmth — felt safe in a way she hadn’t known in centuries.

She blinked up at the window. Dawn painted the sky pale gold.

Kael hadn’t moved all night.

He hadn’t slept.

She felt it instantly — the tension still in his muscles, the faint tremor in his arm, the buzzing alertness of a wolf who had forced himself to stay awake through the darkest hours.

Lina shifted slightly.

Kael reacted instantly — pulling her tighter, protective instinct flaring.

Only then did his eyes open — slow, golden, and softening when he realized she was safe.

“Morning,” he murmured, voice thick with exhaustion.

Lina’s throat tightened. “Kael… you didn’t sleep.”

He blinked once, then shook his head. “Didn’t want to risk it.”

“Kael…”

He brushed her hair back from her face. “You dreamed again?”

She shook her head. “No. Not after you held me.”

A slow breath left him — relief so strong it softened every line of his face.

“Good,” he murmured. “Then staying awake was worth it.”

She frowned. “You can’t do that every night.”

“I will.”

“You’ll collapse.”

“I won’t.”

“Kael—”

He pulled her a fraction closer, nose brushing her hairline.
“You came apart in my arms last night,” he whispered. “You screamed like something was ripping your soul out. I’m not sleeping until I know the rift can’t reach you anymore.”

Lina swallowed hard. “Kael… I’ve handled worse.”

He leaned back just enough to look into her eyes — gold flaring.

“You don’t have to handle anything alone anymore.”

Her breath hitched.

They were too close.
Too warm.
Too wrapped around each other for rational thought.

She slowly slid her hand over his.

His eyes softened instantly.

“You stayed with me,” she whispered.

“I’ll always stay with you,” he said quietly.

The bond pulsed between them — hot, insistent, undeniable.

Lina’s wolf stretched luxuriously inside her chest, leaning into his warmth, his scent, his presence.

She realized something then — something deep and frightening and beautiful:

She trusted him.

Fully.
Completely.
Dangerously.

Her fingers curled into his shirt. “Thank you.”

Kael brushed his thumb along her cheekbone — gentle, reverent.

“I’d do it again,” he murmured. “And again. And again.”

Her heart stuttered.

“Kael…”

His gaze dropped to her lips.

Her lips parted — without her meaning to.

The air shifted.

He leaned in—

A knock thundered against the door.

Kael stiffened. “No.”

Lina almost laughed.

But the knock came again — firmer. Urgent.

“Alpha?” Yara’s voice. “We have a problem.”

Kael growled under his breath and reluctantly sat up. “What now?”

Lina’s cheeks burned as she pulled herself upright, running a hand through her hair.

Kael didn’t move until she was steady — his instinct to watch her, protect her, check her scent, her breathing, her magic levels, all firing at once.

Yara knocked again. “Kael! Now.”

Kael exhaled slowly. “Stay behind me when I open the door.”

“Kael—”

He didn’t budge. “Please.”

Her heart squeezed. “…okay.”

He stepped to the door, opened it — and Yara froze mid-sentence.

Her eyes flicked from Kael’s disheveled hair and tired eyes…
to Lina sitting on his bed…
to their closeness…
and then back to Kael.

A very slow, very knowing smirk spread across her face.

“Oh.”

Kael’s jaw tightened. “Yara.”

“Right, right,” she said, waving a hand. “Not my business. Not yet, anyway.”

Kael’s glare deepened.

Yara cleared her throat. “We have a situation. Theron is calling another emergency session.”

Kael’s voice dropped dangerously. “Why?”

“He’s claiming the shadow fragment reached the council wing.”

Lina stiffened. “What? That’s impossible. It can’t cross the inner wards unless—”

“—someone weakened them,” Yara finished grimly.

Kael’s wolf surged instantly. “Theron.”

Lina’s stomach dropped. “You think he tampered with the wards?”

Yara nodded. “And he’s blaming you.”

Kael growled. “Of course he is.”

Yara raised her brows. “Oh, and he’s demanding Lina be isolated in the lower holding cells until the Council ‘determines the extent of her influence.’”

Lina’s blood chilled.

Kael didn’t hesitate.

“Over my dead body.”

The words thundered through the room.

Yara nodded approvingly. “Thought you’d say that.”

Kael turned to Lina, his expression shifting into something feral and protective.

“No one,” he said softly but fiercely, “is taking you anywhere.”

She swallowed. “Kael—”

He cupped her face—gently, but with the iron conviction of an Alpha.

“I don’t care if the Council meets every hour. I don’t care what Theron thinks he saw. You’re staying with me.”

Her wolf pushed forward, wanting to touch him, wanting to claim him back.

“Kael… they’ll question your leadership.”

“Let them.”

“They’ll accuse you of being compromised.”

He leaned his forehead to hers. “I am.”

Her breath caught.

He closed his eyes.
“…I choose you. Every time.”

Her heart stuttered painfully.

Yara cleared her throat softly. “Alpha? We need to move before Theron gathers a crowd.”

Kael pulled back — but only enough to take Lina’s hand.

“Stay close,” he murmured.

“I’m not leaving,” she whispered.

And together — fingers intertwined — they stepped out of the Alpha’s quarters to face whatever storm the Council was about to unleash.
