Chapter 19 The Alpha’s Quarters

Chapter 19 The Alpha’s Quarters
Kael held her hand the entire walk through the fortress.

Not tightly.
Not possessively.

Just firmly enough that Lina felt anchored again — like the world wasn’t shifting beneath her feet, like the cold from the rift couldn’t crawl back into her bones.

He didn’t speak, and neither did she.
The silence between them wasn’t heavy.
Wasn’t awkward.

It was… safe.

Wolves they passed bowed their heads to Kael, but every pair of eyes flicked to Lina — some curious, some wary, some whispering already.

Kael ignored them.
Completely.

At the far end of the private wing, he opened a door reinforced with thick dark wood, iron nails, and a carved sigil of the crescent moon.

“My room,” he murmured. “Come in.”

Lina stepped inside cautiously.

The Alpha’s quarters were nothing like she expected.

Warm.
Dim.
Surprisingly quiet, filled with soft shadows and the faint scent of cedar and winter pine.

A massive window overlooked the forest.
A heavy table sat under shelves of maps and old scrolls.
Weapons lined one wall, but each carefully placed — not for show, but for use.

The bed — gods, the bed — was large enough for someone to sprawl like a wolf.

Kael stepped in behind her and closed the door with a quiet click.

“You can take the bed,” he said immediately. “I’ll take the chair.”

She stared at him. “Kael.”

“No arguments.”

“You’re exhausted too.”

“I’ll manage.”

Lina crossed her arms. “Your body disagrees. Your wolf too.”

Kael blinked once, surprised.
Then smirked, a soft, tired curve of his lips.

“Fine,” he said. “I’ll lie down… as long as you stay on the bed too.”

Her cheeks warmed.

“Kael—”

“You don’t have to come close,” he added gently. “Just… be where I can reach you if the rift tries something again.”

Her chest tightened.

Slowly, she nodded. “…okay.”

Kael’s shoulders eased — more than she expected.
As if he’d been holding tension for hours and could finally breathe.

Lina moved to the side of the bed, fingers brushing the blankets. Soft. Warm. Comforting.

Kael stayed by the door a moment longer, watching her like he wasn’t sure she’d stay.

She lifted a brow. “Are you coming?”

His expression softened instantly.
He approached slowly — never making sudden moves around her, not since learning about her time trapped in the forest.

He sat on the edge of the bed, running a hand through his hair. “You should sleep first.”

“I’m not tired.”

“You’re trembling.”

“I’m not—”

He gently took her hand.

She was trembling.

Lina exhaled, shoulders lowering. “…fine.”

He smiled softly, releasing her hand only long enough to toe off his boots. Then he stretched out on his side of the bed — shirt still on, posture careful, giving her all the space she needed.

She watched him for a moment, then crawled onto the bed as well, settling on the opposite side.

She lay on her back, staring up at the ceiling.

The silence felt different now.
Closer.
Real.

Kael’s voice was quiet. “Lina.”

She turned her head.
He was already watching her.

Not intensely.
Not hungrily.

Just… openly.

“What you did in the sanctum,” he said, “you saved us.”

Lina shook her head. “It was your wolf that pushed it back. I only—”

“You anchored me.” His voice was steady. “Without that, I would’ve lost focus. You kept the rift from swallowing us.”

She swallowed. “Kael… I’m scared.”

He didn’t move closer — he simply offered his hand, palm open between them, halfway across the bed.

No forcing.
No pressure.

An invitation.

Lina stared at his hand.

Her wolf stepped forward inside her chest, nudging her toward him.

She placed her hand in his.

Kael exhaled like something inside him finally loosened.

His fingers curled gently around hers, warm and steady.

“You’re safe here,” he murmured. “With me.”

She turned her head fully toward him. His eyes glowed faint gold in the dim light. Not full wolf — but close. Protective. Soft.

“Kael,” she whispered, “why are you doing all this for me?”

“Because I want to.”
His thumb brushed her knuckles.
“And because I can’t not.”

Her pulse jumped. “Is that the bond?”

“Partly.” His jaw tightened. “But not all. I don’t need a bond to want you safe.”

Her breath caught. “Kael, if the Council finds out—”

“You let me worry about the Council.”

“But—”

His voice dropped lower. “Lina… I’m not afraid of them.”

She blinked. “I don’t want you risking your position because of—”

“You.”
His eyes met hers.
“And you’re worth it.”

She inhaled sharply.

Kael squeezed her hand gently, like he could sense her heart stumbling.

“You’ve carried everything alone for so long,” he said softly. “Let me carry something with you.”

Her throat tightened painfully.
Her wolf pressed closer, wanting his warmth.

“…Kael.”

“Yes?”

“I don’t know how to stop being alone.”

Kael shifted — slowly — and brushed his shoulder closer to hers so they lay less than a handspan apart.

“You don’t have to know,” he murmured. “Just let me try.”

Her breath hitched.

Something soft and dangerous bloomed in her chest.

“…okay,” she whispered.

Kael let out a slow breath — relief, warmth, something deeper.

He leaned in slightly.

“Sleep,” he whispered.

“You first,” she murmured.

He chuckled softly — the sound rumbling like a wolf purring.

Then he closed his eyes, still holding her hand.

Lina watched him for a long, quiet moment.

His chest rising and falling.
His lashes brushing his cheeks.
His jaw no longer tense with anger or control.
Just Kael.
Just a man who refused to let her face the darkness alone.

Her wolf curled contentedly inside her.

Lina let herself breathe.

And, for the first time in three hundred years, she fell asleep beside someone she trusted.
