Chapter 227 CHAPTER 227

Chapter 227 CHAPTER 227
Kael’s ears twitched at the sound of his name, the faint movement sharp against the stillness that had settled over the clearing.

For a brief moment, he did not move.

Not because he could not—but because something within him had already begun to respond in a way that did not require thought. The name lingered in the air between them, not unfamiliar, not strange, but deeply known, as though it had always belonged to him and had only now been spoken aloud.

His gaze sharpened, fixing fully on Sebastian, and in that instant, the distance between them ceased to matter.

The bond surged.

Not gently.

Not cautiously.

But with a force that broke through hesitation entirely.

Kael moved.

It was not a decision—it was instinct.

The ground beneath him blurred as he ran, his body responding to something deeper than memory, something older than logic. Every step closed the distance that had separated them for far too long, and with each movement, the pull within him grew stronger, anchoring him to the one place he had been trying to return to without even knowing it.

Sebastian did not step back.

He did not hesitate.

The moment Kael moved, something within him answered just as fiercely, just as instinctively, and before he could fully process it, he found himself moving forward as well, drawn into the same invisible current that guided them toward each other.

When they met, it was not careful.

It was not restrained.

Sebastian dropped to his knees without thinking, his hands coming forward immediately as they buried themselves into Kael’s fur, gripping tightly as though grounding himself in something he had been missing for far too long. The contact sent a sharp, overwhelming wave through him—recognition, relief, something dangerously close to emotion he could not yet name—all colliding at once in a way that made his breath catch.

“You’re here,” Sebastian said, his voice unsteady, the words slipping out without the usual control he carried. “You’re actually here.”

Kael pressed into him, solid and real, his presence no longer distant, no longer fragmented. The restlessness that had defined him in the wolf realm began to ease, not disappearing entirely, but settling into something steadier, something that felt like it had finally found its place again.

For a moment, neither of them pulled away.

They did not need to.

The bond spoke where words could not.

But as the initial rush began to settle, something else surfaced within Kael—something quieter, more cautious.

He pulled back slightly, his gaze searching Sebastian’s face with a new kind of intensity, as though trying to reconcile what he felt with what he did not yet fully understand.

“How?” he asked, his voice lower now, edged with confusion that had not entirely faded. “How did you get here?”

Sebastian exhaled, his hand still resting against Kael’s neck as though unwilling to lose contact just yet.

“I’m not completely sure,” he admitted. “Liam brought us here. He said he would explain everything.”

At the mention of Liam, Kael’s posture shifted almost imperceptibly.

It was not hostility.

But it was not trust either.

His gaze flicked briefly past Sebastian, settling on Liam with a guarded sharpness that had not been there moments before.

“You shouldn’t believe everything he says,” Kael said, his tone quieter, but firm enough to carry meaning.

Sebastian frowned slightly, confusion returning as he followed Kael’s gaze.

“What do you mean?” he asked.

Kael did not answer immediately, and in that silence, it became clear that whatever he felt was not fully formed—not yet something he could explain, but something he could not ignore either.

By the time they reached the healer’s cave, the air had shifted again, the weight of reunion giving way to something heavier.

Truth.

The healer stood waiting, his expression calm, though his eyes carried a quiet awareness that suggested he had anticipated this moment long before it arrived.

“They’ve found each other,” he said, not as a question, but as an acknowledgment.

Liam stepped forward slightly. “They have,” he replied. “Now they need to understand.”

Kael remained where he was, his stance still guarded despite everything that had just happened.

“Then explain,” he said.

Liam did not hesitate.

He spoke of Sarah, of the way she had moved unseen among them, feeding from them slowly, weakening them without drawing attention to herself until the damage had already been done. He explained how Kael had been pulled into the wolf realm when his body could no longer sustain itself, how something beyond their control had intervened to preserve what remained of him.

“And when he tried to return,” Liam continued, his voice steady but quieter now, “it cost him more than he could afford.”

Sebastian’s expression tightened slightly as he listened.

“He lost his memories,” Liam finished.

Silence followed, but it was not empty.

It carried weight.

Kael’s gaze did not soften.

“That explains what you believe happened,” he said slowly. “But it does not explain why I should trust you.”

Sebastian turned toward him immediately, something firmer settling into his posture.

“Kael—”

“No,” Kael interrupted, his voice steady now, grounded in something deeper than uncertainty. “If what he says is true… then he is the one who took our mates away from us. How can you trust him when he took them for himself?”

The words landed heavily.

Sebastian stilled, but only for a moment.

Then he stepped forward.

“That’s not what happened,” he said, his voice quieter, but unwavering.

Kael’s gaze shifted to him again.

“We messed up,” Sebastian continued. “Actually… I messed up.”

There was no hesitation in the admission.

No attempt to soften it.

“You tried to warn me when I rejected our mates,” he said. “You felt it before I did. But I didn’t listen.”

Kael’s expression shifted slightly, something uncertain flickering through it.

“Sarah wasn’t who we thought she was,” Sebastian went on. “And by the time I understood that, it was already too late. She had already taken too much from us… from everyone.”

He glanced briefly toward Lisa, then back at Kael.

“And even after everything,” he added, “Lisa still chose to save us.”

Kael’s gaze followed that movement, his attention settling briefly on Lisa, then returning to Sebastian.

“I don’t feel it,” he admitted after a moment, his voice lower now. “The bond. Not the way you’re describing it.”

“That’s because you’re not whole yet,” the healer said gently.

All attention shifted toward him.

“What was taken from him was not just memory,” the healer continued. “It was connection. And connection can be restored.”

Liam’s gaze sharpened slightly. “You think I can do that?”

The healer inclined his head.

“Your power is not something we fully understand,” he said. “But if there is anyone who can bridge what was broken… it would be you.”

Liam exhaled slowly. “And how do I do it?”

The healer’s expression softened slightly.

“The warden magic is vast.” he said. “You can do anything you will your mind to do.”

There was a brief silence before Liam stepped forward.

“I’m not sure if that’s possible,” he said as he glanced at both Sebastian and Kael. “But I’ll try. Come on….”

Sebastian and Kael exchanged a glance, something unspoken passing between them, and then they moved.

Liam placed a hand on each of them, his focus sharpening as the air around them shifted in response. It was subtle at first, but then it deepened, the space around them seeming to respond to something unseen.

“Don’t resist it,” Liam said quietly.

And then—

He reached.

Not physically.

But through something deeper.

The connection surged.

Memories did not return in order. They came in fragments—images, sensations, emotions—colliding and overlapping in a way that was overwhelming and disorienting all at once. Pain came first, sharp and undeniable, followed by flashes of recognition that grounded them just enough to endure it.

Sebastian tightened his hold as Kael staggered slightly, the weight of it hitting him all at once.

“Stay with me,” Sebastian said, his voice steady despite everything.

And slowly—

It settled.

Not perfectly.

But enough.

Kael lifted his head, his gaze clearer now, something within him finally aligning with what had been missing.

“I remember…” he said quietly.

A faint smile touched Sebastian’s lips, relief softening the tension in his shoulders.

Kael exhaled, the breath leaving him lighter than before.

“I can’t wait,” he added, a hint of something softer threading through his voice now, “to be one again.”

The healer watched them with quiet satisfaction, while nearby, Celia and Lisa exchanged a glance that carried relief, warmth, and something deeper—something that spoke of things finally falling into place.

Sebastian turned toward Liam then, something steadier in his expression now.

“Thank you, you didn’t have to be kind to me, but you helped anyway.” he said.

Liam shook his head lightly.

“Don’t thank me. It comes with the title,” he replied. “Nothing more.”

But somehow….

It still felt like more.
