Chapter 8 John's Cunning Trap!
Gerald glared at Jennifer angrily, his eyes flashing. His patience was running out as he watched his own wife and child choose to stay at someone else's house!
"You...! You can't stay at another man's house! I won't allow it!" he shouted, gritting his teeth.
"Why are you angry? That's strange! Isn't it my right to stay at anyone's house, right? And why do I need your permission? You're nobody to me! You're just my Ex-Boss!" Jennifer, feeling a little scared, hid behind Captain Bryan's body.
"JOHN!!!" Gerald shouted, his voice deafening.
"Yes, Mr Gerald?" John approached Gerald fearfully.
"Take care of Mrs Williams! I'm losing my patience with her! She's driving me crazy! I'll wait for you outside!" Gerald growled without looking away from Jennifer, whom he believed to be his wife. His Luna! His partner!
Gerald turned and strode towards the lift with heavy steps.
"Phew! Finally, that crazy man is gone!" Jennifer, who was hiding behind Captain Bryan, had been holding his hand without realising it.
"Oh, sorry, Captain Bryan, I didn't mean to! That man was really scary with his loud, deep voice! Hehehe... it made me a little uncomfortable!" Jennifer exclaimed, a little embarrassed.
"No problem, Mrs Ross! Would you like to leave now? Or are there any belongings you would like to take with you, Mrs Ross?" Captain Bryan asked again with a friendly smile.
"Sorry to trouble you, Captain Bryan! Just a moment, I've already packed my things, I'll just get my suitcase!" Jennifer dashed to her house and grabbed the suitcase she had prepared earlier.
After glancing back at the house she had occupied just yesterday, Jennifer pulled her suitcase out while holding her son Alex by the hand.
"Let's go, Captain Bryan!" Jennifer called out again.
Captain Bryan nodded slowly and said, "Is everything ready? Nothing left behind?"
Jennifer smiled warmly and shook her head. "No! Everything is ready. Luckily, we haven't put all our clothes in the wardrobe yet, so... it's quicker to pack them!"
"In that case, let's go!" Captain Bryan took Jennifer's suitcase and pulled it along.
As they were about to leave, someone called out to Jennifer.
"Ma'am! I mean, Mrs Ross!" It turned out that the person calling her was John, Gerald's assistant.
"Yes?" Jennifer turned around lazily.
"Are you really moving to Mr. Smith's residence, ma'am?" he asked a little kindly.
Jennifer sighed. "Yes, is that a problem for you?"
"Ah, of course not! But may we contact you later, ma'am?" he asked cautiously.
Jennifer's brow furrowed again, "Why?"
John looked flustered for a moment, then spoke calmly.
"At least so we can finish your paperwork! Regarding your employment contract with us? If you resign, don't you at least have to sign a letter of resignation, ma'am?" John said softly and diplomatically.
An annoyed Jennifer turned around, "Listen, Mr John! I'm not the one resigning! Your boss fired me! So it's not right for me to sign a letter of resignation, is it?"
John smiled even wider, Jennifer had taken the bait.
"Why are you smiling?" Jennifer looked at him suspiciously.
"In that case, I'll be waiting for you tomorrow morning! At 9:00 a.m.! Because you have a lot of work to do!" John exclaimed as he walked away, smiling again.
"What? Hey! What do you mean by that?! Wait!" Jennifer was about to chase after John, but John just bowed and before disappearing into the lift, he said very loudly.
"See you tomorrow morning, Mrs Ross! Remember, 9:00 am! Don't be late!" John shouted, trying to hold back his laughter.
"Hey!! I didn't say I agreed, okay! Hey!! You...! Damn assistant! You're no different from your boss!" Jennifer shouted in front of the elevator that had just closed, and she heard someone laughing loudly.
"Damn it! Ouch!!"
Jennifer kicked the elevator door in frustration.
After the commotion and frustration with Gerald's assistant, Jennifer got out and got into Captain Bryan's car.
Captain Bryan's house was in the quiet neighbourhood of Sylmar, surrounded by nature and located at the foot of the hills, about 40 km from Larchmont and took them about half an hour to reach.
Before long, they arrived at the house that Captain Bryan described as simple but comfortable and well-maintained.
The white and grey house might have seemed simple, but not to Jennifer. In front of it were two tall ornamental plants in front of a closed brown parking gate.
With the automatic button, the garage door began to open.
Captain Bryan parked his car and then got out, opened the boot and took out Jennifer's suitcase. Jennifer got out with Alex.
Jennifer smiled at Alex. Her son seemed alert, as if protecting his mother.
'I'm lucky to have Alex! Regardless of who his father is!' Jennifer thought to herself.
Alex turned and smiled warmly. Jennifer remembered that Alex could read her mind, and gently kissed his forehead.
"It's okay, right? We're staying here for now?" said Jennifer softly.
"It's okay, Mum! As long as I'm with you!"
Jennifer was about to answer when she heard someone calling.
"Jennifer, Alex! Come here! Let's go inside!" shouted Captain Bryan.
"Okay, Mr Smith!" Jennifer was getting used to calling Bryan Mr Smith.
Jennifer was aware of her position as a single mother and Bryan had been very kind to her, she didn't want any gossip between them!
Or give false hope that would cause her trouble later!
After all, Jennifer had come to L.A. to work, not to find a lover!
Captain Bryan frowned as he thought to himself, 'It seems she has made her decision... to build a high wall! It will be much more difficult than I thought!'
They closed the gate to the house's car park and entered through the side door, so the garage was separate from the main house next to it.
The house was classic in style but still modern, and it looked clean and tidy.
Captain Bryan inserted his key and opened the door wide.
"Come in! Sorry, I rarely stay at this house, so the furniture is still neatly covered with cloth! Hmm… we can clean it later! Upstairs there are three rooms; you can use two of them. And the one in the far corner is my room! The kitchen is downstairs on the left… and it’s fully equipped, so you can use it! Is there anything else you need?” Bryan explained, describing his two-storey house.
Jennifer turned and smiled, "Enough! This is more than enough! But we'll just stay in one room together! Alex isn't very comfortable in new places usually."
Captain Bryan smiled nervously, "Of course, no problem! But isn't Alex a little too big to stay in one room with you, right?"
Jennifer fell silent and stared at Captain Bryan intently.
"It seems... you don't like me staying in the same room with Alex? If you object, we'd better find the nearest hotel!" said Jennifer, starting to walk away.
Captain Bryan panicked a little, feeling uncomfortable, "Not at all! I mean... I'm afraid you won't be comfortable sleeping in the same bed! Because the bed is... hmm... not very big! Sorry if you misunderstood what I said! Oh, yes, I need to go to the minimarket for a moment, it seems the fridge at my house
is empty!"
"Don't bother! We can order food tonight... Besides... it seems we won't be here too long!"
"What? Why?"
