Chapter 6 She’s My Wife and My Son!
Alex ran ahead and stopped right in front of the door to their apartment unit.
Jennifer bumped into him. Somehow, Alex managed to hold his mother and himself back from falling, which confused Jennifer even more.
"Alex! How did you... —"
"Mum! There's no time to explain! Look... our house has been burgled!" said Alex with a panicked expression, shifting slightly so his mother could see inside their house, whose door appeared to have been damaged and was no longer locked. Their door was only attached to one wall.
"What? What happened?" Jennifer tried to enter slowly, pushing the door gently for fear that it would fall and injure them, and saw the mess inside the house.
The front door looked like it had been scratched by something — long scratches were carved into its surface. But... What were those scratches? She looked around. What were they actually looking for?
Jennifer had just moved into this flat yesterday. They didn't know anyone in the neighbourhood yet. So... they shouldn't have any enemies, right?
Jennifer was about to reach for her broken chair, but her attention was diverted by the clothes scattered on the floor. The furniture that had been neatly arranged was now overturned. The dining tablecloth was torn.
“What the hell is this…” she muttered, stunned.
She walked towards the TV room. The sofa was also damaged, she wandered towards her kitchen like a dazed person, her arranged furniture scattered out, coffee, milk, tea, crazy, spices all in a mess, and flour covered her kitchen floor.
She then ran towards her room, her bed was a mess! Her room was wide open!
She remembered something, and opened the bottom drawer. "Thank God! It's still there! Thank God!" Jennifer cried with emotion.
"Mum, is something missing?" Alex asked worriedly.
"It's a good thing it's still there Lex, otherwise how would we survive here in L.A. It's our savings for your school fees, and deposits for our needs and some of Mommy's savings, it's not much but it counts. The money is still there. So what are they looking for?" Jennifer asked, confused.
"I'll call the police!" Jennifer grabbed her purse and rushed to call the police. But then it was hung up by Alex.
"Wait Mom! Look at this!" Alex accidentally looked at his mum's bed.
He picked it up and showed her a soft grey feather.
"What's that, Lex? A feather? But what fur? Are there any wild animals here? Seriously, we're big! Or is there a pet loose here?" Jennifer tried to kiss it, for some reason she wanted to sniff it too. Alex did the same.
"Put that fur in this box Lex! It might come in handy later." Jennifer said again while reaching for her mobile phone. "I'm still going to call the police! We have to report it anyway!" Jennifer said as she sat on the edge of the bed.
"Alex! Check your room, is anything missing? Hurry up!" Jennifer exclaimed as she closed her mobile phone before speaking again.
"Ok, Mum!" Alex then ran towards his room which was next to hers.
Jennifer called the police and they were on their way. She went to her son's room to see him busy searching his room which was also a mess.
"How was it? Is anything missing?"
Alex shook his head. "I don't know if this matters, Mum! But the picture of the two of us is missing the one with grandma and grandpa!"
Alex opened the photo album where there was only one picture of them with his grandmother and grandfather in Chicago in front of the house. It was New Year's Eve.
"What? Photo? Which photo?" Jennifer immediately crouched down to look at the photo album that seemed to be open a little.
"Do they recognise her? Know her mum and dad?" Jennifer thought to herself.
"Maybe, Mum! But as far as I know Grandma and Grandpa don't have any enemies, right? Do we have enemies Mum?" said Alex who read his mum's mind.
"Wow! Alex! Stop it! Mum isn't used to this habit! When you can read my mind! Don't surprise me like this again, okay?" said Jennifer, shocked and half annoyed.
"Sorry Mom!" said Alex with a grin.
"Maybe we should talk about this seriously! And don't say anything about it! Especially if the police come! They'll suspect us! Remember that!" Jennifer said, hugging her son.
"Ok, Mum! Don't worry!" he said.
It wasn't long before the police started arriving and checking their house and asking questions and they also checked the CCTV. But they didn't get any results. But they took some evidence for them to check and fingerprint as well.
"Ok! Mrs Ross’s, we're going to check this in more depth and we've also taken some evidence to check. Hopefully the results will come out soon. We'll let you know as soon as possible." said Captain Bryan Smith
"Thank you, Captain!" said Jennifer kindly.
"You're welcome, if you need any help sorting this out...or in the meantime...you can stay at my house!" offered Captain Bryan with a friendly smile.
"No thank you, Captain. Maybe we'll stay in a hotel for a while. Or maybe you'll have to find a new apartment. I don't know, I haven't thought about it yet." Jennifer said back.
"All right, but if you need any help, contact me immediately. But, my advice... if you don't know anyone in this city... it's better to accept my offer! Be careful of unwanted things happening later! I'm worried they will still look for you! Please consider my offer. Oh yes, here is my business card. May I have your telephone number, Mrs. Ross?" he asked gently.
"I'll think about your tempting offer, Captain, but maybe... today... we'll just stay at a hotel! I want to calm myself down! This incident is truly shocking and beyond my expectations. And please just call me Jennifer. Of course, here's my business card," she said, handing him her number.
"Well, then you can call me Bryan then. I've saved your number. Then you should go, we are temporarily closed for investigation." said Captain Bryan Smith still with his charming smile.
"Thank you, Captain!" said Jennifer looking down embarrassed, she felt as if Bryan was hitting on her.
"Would you like me to take you to the nearest hotel, perhaps?" said the captain, Bryan Smith.
"Ah, that..." Jennifer hadn't finished her sentence yet someone said behind Captain Bryan Smith.
"No need! She's my wife and my Son! I'll take care of them!"
"What?" Jennifer stared at someone with a glare, yes, that annoying man. Even the last person she wished she could see was that guy.
