Chapter 102
There were not many Lycan Alphas that existed, even within the larger Lycan community. With their power levels being what they were, even the Lycans they had chosen as their Alphas still seemed indistinguishable from the average Lycan warrior. So seeing a Lycan as imposing and powerful as Jason made all the Lycans present at the front gates tremble in reverence and awe. They could all instinctively recognize Jason as the more powerful Lycan.
Jason’s Lycan was about a head taller than all the other Lycans and he seemed to be projecting his Alpha’s authority subconsciously in that form. As such every one of his warriors, both wolf and Lycan alike, seemed to be linked to him instinctively regardless of which pack they were from.
Dispatching the last of the Half Moon warriors in that wave of attack, the Silver Lake warriors regrouped as the warriors with the shields pushed forward towards the castle.
Using this as an opportunity, Allan moved closer to Patrick to address what he felt needed their attention.
“Patrick, what is his bloodline?” Allan asked concerned at what he had witnessed.
“I don’t think that’s important right now, Allan”, Patrick said, as he tried to deflect the question.
“Yes, it is!” Allan protested as he grabbed Patrick’s arm. “Look at him!”
Of course, Patrick knew exactly what his friend was talking about. Apart from Jason’s imposing build, he was also able to rally the wolves and lycans around him regardless of their pack allegiances. He had often thought it was strange that Jason could form bonds with his people without a blood oath, but he had always attributed it to being a trait of a dominant Alpha. And now that he had become a Lycan, all his dominant traits were dialed up to a level not seen in a couple of generations.
“We haven’t seen a Lycan of that caliber since the late Lycan King”, Allan continued. “Why did you keep all of this from us, Patrick? First, we discover that your granddaughter is a Silver Lycan, and now it looks like her mate has the power to be the next Lycan King.”
Looking back at Jason, Patrick watched as he shifted back into his equally imposing human form as he continued to give orders to his warriors. He looked around at all the wolves around him and saw that they were instinctively drawn to him and still looked at him with awe even in his human form.
“I know. But I need you to leave them be for now”, Patrick said with a sigh. “I didn’t voice my thoughts about them because neither of them want that responsibility. They have never wanted that kind of power and I know that they never will. I just want my children to be happy together. And they can’t do that with the responsibility of our entire race hanging on their necks for the rest of their lives.”
Allan contemplated his words for a moment before he glanced in Jason’s direction. He saw how Jason looked away from his warriors and looked up at the castle with a wistful look on his face.
“All he wants is his mate…” Allan said in reflection, remembering Jason’s words. “Fine! I’ll let it go for now. But we’ll need to address this sooner or later. There is a reason why they are mated to each other and you know it.”
“Thank you, Allan”, Patrick said as he placed a hand on his friend’s shoulder.
The Silver Lake warriors were still in the process of organizing themselves and moving their wounded to safety when Jason heard the sound of stomping on the ground from a large contingent of warriors heading their way. Half Moon seemed to be sending the largest wave of their warriors to attack them all at once hoping to push them back with their greater numbers.
Jason cocked his head to the side as he listened to the sound of their feet hitting the ground, trying to estimate their numbers. He looked back towards the castle and guessed that this must be all the warriors that they had left heading their way.
“Shields!”, Jason ordered. “Spearhead formation!”
He aimed to use the shield to divide their forces so that it would be easier for their warriors to pick off the Half Moon warriors regardless of their numbers. As they followed their orders, the wolves with the shields immediately took their positions as they readied themselves for the next wave of attacks. The Silver Lake wolves that were spread out over the battleground came together behind the shields to prepare for the final push.
“This is the last of them!”, Jason bellowed out at his warriors. “After this, we storm their stronghold!”
The wolves and lycans in their ranks cheered their understanding and compliance with their leader. The Silver Lake warriors had begun this battle with the understanding that it might be a long drawn-out fight. So their strategy aimed to whittle down their numbers with each wave of attacks until they were reduced to a force they could easily overcome. And they had succeeded for the most part and all that was left was the largest wave of their warriors.
When the Half Moon warriors were close to them, they immediately started shifting into their wolf forms as a good portion of them continued to fire on the Silver Lake warriors.
Looking around at his warriors taking cover behind the shields, Jason noticed that the shields were starting to develop cracks in them. He knew that their defenses would not hold for much longer unless he could distract them and draw their fire in some other way.
So Jason shifted into his Lycan form again and jumped over the shields to attack the shifted wolves and draw some of their gunfire at him. Seeing him trying to defend them only made the wolves and lycans in his ranks join him outside the shields in fighting the Half Moon wolves.
Unfortunately, the sheer number of the Half Moon warriors seemed to be a match to the greater power of the Silver Lake wolves and Lycans. But they fought nonetheless, spurred on by Jason’s bravery and ruthlessness.
From behind the shields, Patrick lowered himself to listen to a radio message that he received without warning. After listening to the message, he raised himself and linked with Jason.
“Secondary team incoming!”, Patrick said through the link.
So as not to give away what their plans were, Jason linked the entire invading force at the same time to get down to their knees. They all lowered themselves as Dennis and the secondary invasion force appeared in a flanking position behind the Half Moon warriors and opened fire with their rifles and rocket-propelled grenades.
In that one attack, they managed to take out a considerable number of the Half Moon warriors before they realized that they were being attacked from the rear.
As Dennis and his team drew their attention to them, Jason rallied the Lycan warriors who all shifted and followed Jason in charging into their lines.
The Half Moon warriors were now being attacked from two directions and were now too disorientated to be able to defend from either side. If they tried to attack the secondary team, Jason’s team would catch them off guard and vice versa.
During the short period after the attack from the secondary team, they managed to beat their numbers down to only a few dozen warriors. And the Half Moon warriors could no longer deny that they were about to be annihilated.
This battle was almost over and if they stuck around much longer, they would not be able to survive to see another day. So what was left of the Half Moon warriors retreated to the castle hurriedly as the inevitability of this battle began to sink in.
As the Half Moon warriors fled the battle, Dennis and the secondary team pressed forward and held their position until Jason and his warriors joined them. The secondary team had done a good job of replenishing their warriors who had already begun to feel the strain from the continuous fighting.
“You took your time…” Patrick chuckled as he shook Dennis’s hand.
“My apologies”, Dennis replied. “There were a lot more people trying to escape this godforsaken pack than we had anticipated.”
“Glad you could join us”, Patrick said.
The secondary team took their positions within their main forces as they all prepared for the final push towards the castle. Their strategy had worked beautifully and now they were in the final stages of their attack on the Half Moon pack.
Looking up at the castle, Jason swore to Amelia that he would be with her soon. He then looked back at his warriors and there was not a single scared or apprehensive face in the group. They had all followed him this far without hesitation.
So all that was left was to push forward.
“Advance!”, Jason ordered as they began marching towards the castle.
