Chapter 43 : The Moon Does Not Ask Permission

Chapter 43 : The Moon Does Not Ask Permission
The Citadel did not sleep that night.

It watched.

Torches burned along the battlements long past dusk, their flames bending strangely in the wind as if drawn towards the fractured sanctum below. Word spread faster than messengers could run — through servants, guards, wolves who felt the shift in their bones.

Something had changed.

Aria felt it even as exhaustion dragged at her limbs. Kael carried her through corridors she barely recognised, her head resting against his shoulder, every step echoing too loudly in the charged silence.

“They’re afraid,” she murmured.

Kael’s jaw tightened. “They should be.”

She managed a faint smile, but it faded quickly as the weight of the night settled over her again. The Sovereign’s presence lingered at the edge of her awareness — no longer invasive, but attentive. As if waiting for her to speak first.

They reached a guarded chamber deep within the Citadel — one warded heavily, ancient runes etched into every stone. Kael set her down gently on the bed, kneeling before her as if afraid she might vanish if he let go.

“You nearly died,” he said quietly.

“So did you,” she replied.

His eyes darkened. “I’m used to it.”

“That doesn’t make it acceptable.”

Silence stretched between them, heavy with everything unsaid — the visions, the memories, the way the chamber had responded to her and recoiled from him.

From the curse.

“I saw you,” Aria said softly. “In her memories.”

Kael’s shoulders stiffened. “Then you know what she did to you.”

“I know what they did to both of you.”

His gaze snapped to hers, something raw flickering there before he masked it. “Aria—”

A knock cut through the moment.

Cassian entered without waiting for permission, expression grim. “The Council is convening.”

Kael stood immediately. “Now?”

“They didn’t ask,” Cassian said flatly. “They’re calling it an emergency session. Every Alpha who can reach the Citadel by dawn has been summoned.”

Aria felt the weight of it settle into her chest. “They felt the awakening.”

Cassian nodded. “And the refusal.”

Kael cursed under his breath. “They won’t tolerate ambiguity.”

“No,” Cassian agreed. “They’ll want a declaration.”

The word echoed ominously.

Aria pushed herself to her feet, legs unsteady but determined. “Then they’ll have to wait.”

Cassian hesitated. “There’s more.”

Kael turned slowly. “Say it.”

“The Shadow Priests are gone.”

Aria’s breath caught. “Gone?”

“Vanished,” Cassian confirmed. “No trace. No residual magic. It’s as if the Citadel itself expelled them.”

Kael’s instincts screamed a warning. “They wouldn’t retreat unless they gained something.”

Aria closed her eyes briefly.

They have me now, the Sovereign murmured faintly.

She opened her eyes. “They know I won’t submit.”

“That makes you unpredictable,” Cassian said. “And dangerous.”

The Council chamber filled quickly.

Alphas from distant territories arrived still dusted with road and blood, some respectful, others openly hostile. Murmurs rippled through the hall as Aria entered beside Kael — not crowned, not bowed, not hidden.

Just present.

The moment she crossed the threshold, the torches flared silver.

The room fell silent.

An elder Alpha rose slowly from his seat, eyes sharp and calculating. “The Lost Luna stands before us.”

Aria met his gaze without flinching. “I stand as myself.”

A low growl rippled through the chamber.

“You triggered the Crimson Oath,” another Alpha snapped. “You endangered every pack by doing so.”

“I survived it,” Aria replied calmly. “Which means it was meant to happen.”

“That does not grant you authority,” the elder Alpha said coldly. “Authority is claimed. Or bestowed.”

Kael stepped forward. “Or earned.”

Several Alphas bristled.

“You speak boldly for one still cursed,” someone muttered.

Kael’s eyes flashed dangerously.

Aria placed a hand on his arm — grounding him, steadying herself. The contact sent a quiet pulse through both of them, unnoticed by most… but not all.

A woman seated near the dais narrowed her eyes.

“Your bond is unstable,” she observed. “And dangerous.”

Aria’s pulse quickened. “It isn’t complete.”

“Exactly,” the woman replied. “Which means the curse remains uncontained. If you fall, Prince Draven falls with you. If you rise—”

She let the implication hang.

The elder Alpha leaned forward. “The Moon has not crowned you. Until it does, you are a risk.”

Aria took a slow breath.

“I will not be rushed into sovereignty to make you comfortable.”

Gasps echoed.

Kael’s heart pounded. “Aria—”

She raised her chin. “If I rule, it will be because I choose to. Not because you fear what I might become.”

The chamber trembled faintly.

Not violently.

Warnedly.

The elder Alpha’s expression hardened. “Then you leave us no choice.”

Aria’s blood ran cold. “What choice?”

The Alpha’s gaze flicked to Kael. “Until your awakening stabilises, the Prince must be removed from your influence.”

Silence shattered into uproar.

Kael lunged forward, fury blazing. “You will not touch her.”

“She will not be harmed,” the Alpha said evenly. “But you will be contained.”

Aria felt the Sovereign stir sharply. No.

Her mark flared faintly beneath her skin.

“You will not take him,” she said, voice steady but edged with something dangerous.

The woman near the dais smiled thinly. “Then awaken, Luna. Prove us wrong.”

Guards moved.

Kael felt restraints forming — ancient magic snapping into place around his wrists.

Aria’s heart slammed painfully in her chest.

This was the choice.

Too soon.

The moonlight pouring through the high windows shifted, growing brighter and heavier, as if listening.

And somewhere deep within her blood, the countdown began.
