Chapter 50—Lockdown, Called Off
It was then everything came rushing back to Elvin. The date and how the bouncers had specially treated them. It was because of Eve. The policemen in the courtroom, and the judge. Then he understood.
“You loved me without knowing who I am,” Eve said.
“Loved?” Elvin said. “I love you. I really love you, and I don’t see any reason why that has to change, but it seems I’ve walked into a different world I didn’t know existed. When I first saw you, I thought you were a common whore. My thoughts of you weren’t decent, or honorable. It was all base thinking…”
“And I never held you against it. I want all we shared during the lockdown.”
During the lockdown. But the lockdown was still on.
“Who are you?” Elvin asked.
“The lady you claimed to have fallen in love with,” Eve said. “Get in and let’s discuss this in private, please.”
Elvin felt his legs moving forward without him controlling it. He got into the stretched car, and Eve followed behind. The guard closed the door, and in the air-conditioned comfort, and the light that shone them, hiding the shadows in the car, thanks to the tinted glasses, they stared at each other.
“Why didn’t you tell me?” Elvin asked.
“I tried to, but you didn’t let me,” Eve said. “Besides, there was no guarantee that this would really happen, which if it didn’t, I would have still been ready to keep my secret.”
“Well, it has happened, and I do not intend to turn back. I just—I’m just wondering what else you’re hiding.”
The cars went into motion.
“Not much,” Eve said.
“Are you kidding me?” Elvin asked. “First, I find out my girlfriend, no, wife is some kind of big deal in this city, and you think there’s not much to it.”
“Absolutely. Only, we should be thinking of where to spend our honeymoon. Name anywhere of your choice.”
Elvin felt intimidated, but also at the same time, he felt so alive with so much possibility. “I—I—I don’t know where I would like to spend my honeymoon. Quite frankly, it may not be your taste. I think I will let you decide that.”
“Great.”
And this was how he knew a family should operate. Ladies were never to be looked down on. They may not exactly know everything when it comes to certain things, but it was always grand knowing their decision on a particular matter.
Eve dialed a number and placed the phone to her ear. “Give me a sec, Elvin.”
Elvin nodded.
“Priscilla!” Eve said.
“Yes, ma’am,” her secretary said.
“Do the needful. I’ll be taking a trip and I’ll be out of the city for weeks.”
“Understood ma’am.”
Eve ended the call, she smiled and turned to look at Elvin. “Are you okay?”
Elvin shook his head and smiled. “Still in shock, quite frankly. Mild shock, not major.”
“I’m glad.” Besides, there was no way she could keep this a secret from him for long. She looked forward, not believing she had done it. She had finally done it. He was now hers, and he was beside her. She was going to conquer another city, and Elvin, her husband, would be right next to her when she did.
The cars rode into a private airstrip belonging to the O’Neals, and they moved close to a white Gulfstream on the tarmac.
Eve saw the look of amazement on Elvin’s face, and she smiled. Who said men didn’t like to be treated with surprises. Especially the good ones. Well, so far he doesn’t cheat, he was totally worthy of all this, and more.
A call came in for Elvin, but he refused to acknowledge it. To him, there was nothing catchier and more interesting than the sight before him.
“Would you get that?” Eve asked as they came to a stop next to the Gulfstream.
Elvin shook his head. “Nah. It’s probably nothing. I’ll ignore it.”
Eve insisted, “Get it.” The guard opened her door, and she got down.
Elvin looked to see who the caller was, it was Bert Shepherd, his former work colleague, and friend who had called him to tell him that there was a lockdown. If Bert was calling, he definitely had authentic news for Elvin. So bad of Elvin to have ignored his calls. So Elvin answered.
“Hello, Bert,” Elvin said, and without waiting, he went on. “Look, I’m really sorry for ignoring your call. I was just—”
“Boss!” Bert called, interrupting Elvin.
“What did you call me?”
“Boss.”
“Why would you call me that?”
“You are the sole power of the company now. We merged with Green Height, and Green Heights now belongs to you.”
Elvin’s eyes widened. “When did this happen?”
“Yesterday. I thought you knew.”
“But I’m working for the owner of Green—oh no.” And Elvin knew who was responsible. He placed a hand to his forehead.
Bert laughed. “Well, congratulations. Seems you were the only one fired, only to own a massive venture. Really, congratulations. Also, they’ve called off the lockdown. They just did a few minutes ago. So, don’t worry. Come late, or come a week, or a month later. We will hold the fort down for you.”
“I don’t know what to say.”
“Well, you can start by thanking whoever is responsible for this massive promotion. Only, I don’t see anyone now but you at the top. So, maybe, you should be thanking yourself.”
“Thank you,” Elvin said. “Really, I appreciate Bert.”
“Thank you, sir.”
And with that, Elvin ended the call, and then his eyes fell on the bank notification. Being a bit curious since all this day had to offer were surprises, he opened it, and he saw that his account had been credited with a million dollars just as Eve had promised. Then, something deep inside him told him this was just the start. A start to what? More grand surprises?
Eve was waiting at the foot of the steps with a red carpet as Elvin walked up to her. She read his expression quite clearly. “Are you okay?” she asked.
Elvin’s uncontrollable grin told her the coast was clear.
“Thank you,” Elvin said.
Eve shrugged. “Really, it’s nothing. Besides, there’s more to come.”
No one just handed out a company to another person unless they had so many more working for them. Besides, Eve didn’t really lose the company. Green Height was still in the family.
“So, I have an idea for our honeymoon,” Eve said. “How about we tour every grand and expensive place we could think of?”
“Sounds good.”
“And it would be a trip that won’t be called off soon. There would be no thoughts of work. Just adventure, love, and whatever we could dream of.”
“You can’t be serious.”
“Oh, I am. Remember, I did hint about a lady taking care of a man and having him not worry about work and all that. Well, I’m that lady. So hop on. Let’s take this plane for a spin.”
“More like a trip,” Elvin said, ascending the stairs with her.
Eve laughed. “You got that right.”
On entering the plane, Eve’s phone beeped, and she looked at it to see it was a text from Lisa, also known as Ann, her stepsister. She opened the text, which read:
Congratulations on your victory. You retain sole right to being the head of the family.
Eve grinned and whispered, “You’re damn right.”
Eve gave the departure order, and the engines whined. The plane slowly moved, and broke into a run, and in no time, they were airborne.
One thing with this life she lived was that there was always a lot of secrecy. And knowing this, Eve said, “How about we continue our game on the plane?”
Elvin looked at her.
“All I have to do is lift my gown, and you can spring free your John,” she said. “Also, you’re sitting too far. Let’s share this couch.”
Elvin moved over to her side, for indeed, the plane didn’t have regular plane seats. They were sofas, and even a minibar.
“And if the ride becomes a bit bumpy,” he said.
Eve grinned. “Then, we’ll move to the bedroom.”
“Amazing,” Elvin said, looking at the lady he thought was unorganized at first. Seeing how composed she was, he knew she was someone to really respect. Someone to adore, worship, and love. “Game on.”
And they began a new game.
