Chapter 221: You Can Relax, But Don't Get Sloppy

Chapter 221: You Can Relax, But Don't Get Sloppy
Evelyn's POV

The reinforcements arrived four days after the battle.

I stood at the territory entrance watching three black SUVs roll in. No logos, no flash—just standard government convoy.

The cars stopped and the first guy out was someone I knew. Conrad, one of the senior instructors from Sentinel training. He was in dark tactical gear, eyes sweeping over the border area that still showed signs of the fight. Then he looked at me.

Smiled.

"Our little warrior did something big." He walked over and clapped my shoulder. "Heard you held the whole damn territory against a suppression field. That's not nothing."

"It wasn't just—"

"Don't." He cut me off. "Alpha King Nathan saw the report himself. Said you anchored the entire defensive grid. Most people can't pull that off."

Hearing Nathan's name made me pause. "How is he? And everyone else?"

"Good. All good." Conrad nodded. "He said once things settle down here, he'll come by with Alistair. Check in on you."

"Haven't seen Alistair or Aria in a while."

"They're fine. Aria actually asked about you last month." He stopped, looked past me. "Where's your crew? Sophia, Mark, Cyrus?"

"Right behind me."

Conrad turned and waved at them. "Hey! Long time."

Mark practically bounced forward. "Conrad! Perfect timing—we've got food."

Conrad laughed. "Now you're talking. Been driving two days straight."

"I'll take you to the pack house!"

Sophia muttered, "Mark found his soulmate."

Cyrus said, "Apparently."

I couldn't help it—laughed.

Conrad started walking with Mark, but turned back. "I'll bring you Alpha King Nathan's letter in a bit. Got a stack of paperwork to go through first."

"Yeah, okay."

The documents were thick. Official recognition of Polaris territory control. Confirmation that the battle was legitimate. Full charges against Brandon laid out in writing. And one letter from Alpha King Nathan himself.

Adam read it first, passed it to Magnus. Magnus read it, handed it to Lucian.

Lucian flipped through. "Pretty dry."

Orion said, "He's the Alpha King. That's how he writes."

"Could've been a little more excited though. We did take Brandon down."

Adam was already heading for the side door. "Taking him down was the point. Don't need a gold star for it."

Lucian thought about that. "Fair."

The letter was short. Nathan said he knew what happened, that the territory handled things right, and the reinforcements were here to help rebuild—not take over. Very official. Very clear.

By afternoon, Juniper and Nadia were doing the final purification sweep.

The reinforcements had cleared the energy blockages, so now was the best time. They were covering everything—border to pack house, every spot Brandon's people had touched. Juniper said it was about stripping away their residue so the land could reset.

Nadia followed her around, logging locations and holding auxiliary nodes. They had a rhythm going—not teacher-student, more like two people solving the same problem from different angles.

Milo tagged along. Officially for security. Really because he didn't want Nadia out of his sight.

At the third location, Nadia bent down to sketch something on the ground. Milo crouched next to her, leaning in.

"You don't even know what this is."

"Just looking."

He stayed there, face maybe a foot from hers. She got halfway through the markings, glanced over, found him staring.

"Why're you this close?"

"Trying to see what you're doing."

"You're looking at me, not the ground."

"Yeah."

Nadia blinked. "You're weird." Shoved his face away.

Milo grinned, backed off half a step. Still stayed crouched right there.

I watched the whole thing, walked over. Kept my voice low. "You good with this?"

"With what?"

"Him following you everywhere."

She thought about it. "Yeah. Rather have him here than not." Pause. "Don't tell him I said that."

"Wasn't planning to."

Milo spoke up. "What're you two saying?"

We both answered at once. "Nothing."

The last purification point was dead center—where the magic circle's core had been buried. Juniper finished, dusted off her hands. "Done. Clean."

Mark said, "So we're actually good now? Like, for real?"

Juniper gave him a look. "You can relax, but don't get sloppy."

"What's the difference?"

"Relaxing's a mindset. Sloppy's a habit. Don't mix them up."

Mark nodded slowly. "Okay. So... relax the mindset, don't get sloppy with the habits."

"Exactly."

I stood there taking it in. Filing Juniper's words away. This fight was over, sure. Didn't mean the next one wasn't coming.

Lucian showed up next to me, hand dropping onto my shoulder. "Come on. Let's eat."

"Yeah."

Followed him back. The sun slowly sank toward the horizon, painting the sky orange-red.
