Chapter 219: You Said It Now

Chapter 219: You Said It Now
Evelyn's POV

When I woke up, afternoon light was slanting through the hospital room window—warm and golden, that weird in-between hour where you can't tell if the day's ending or just getting started.

I didn't move right away.

Just lay there staring at the ceiling, letting my brain catch up. Replayed yesterday in my head. Brandon going down. The territory holding. All of it real. Not a dream.

Then I shifted my gaze to the side.

Three people.

Magnus sat in the chair by the bed, arms crossed, back straight. Watching me with this serious look—the kind that said he'd been waiting for me to wake up. Lucian sat next to him, one leg hooked over the armrest, also staring. When he caught my eyes, he leaned in. Orion stood on the other side, hands shoved in his pockets. His shoulders dropped when he saw me awake.

I turned my head back and spoke. Voice came out scratchy.

"What time is it?"

Lucian said, "Three thirty."

"How long was I out?"

"Eighteen hours, give or take."

"Huh."

I flexed my fingers. Everything still worked. Started to sit up and Magnus shoved a pillow behind me without asking. I settled against it.

"Thanks."

Magnus looked at me. Paused. Then said my name.

"Evie."

I looked at him.

"I owe you an apology."

Beat.

"I didn't protect you. Not when it mattered." His voice stayed level but something in it felt off, like he was forcing the words out. "You protected us instead."

Magnus wasn't the type to say stuff like this. Getting those words out had clearly cost him something. After he finished, his face got more uncomfortable, like he wanted to keep going but didn't know how.

I watched him.

"Max."

He met my eyes.

"You said it now." Stopped. "That's all that matters."

Something in Magnus's expression loosened—not a smile, just the tension breaking. He nodded once. Didn't say anything else.

Lucian dropped his hand on Magnus's shoulder, quiet. "Look at that. You got the whole thing out."

Magnus said, "Just saying what happened."

I looked at both of them and felt my mouth pulling up. Tried not to smile. Failed. Let out a small laugh.

They both turned to stare at me.

Lucian said, "What?"

"Nothing. Just—nothing."

Lucian leaned closer. "Then I'm doing this every day. Making you laugh."

Heat crept up my neck.

Glanced sideways. Caught Orion watching with that look on his face—the one that said he saw exactly what just happened and wasn't gonna say a word about it.

My face got warmer. Looked back at the ceiling.

The door swung open.

Mark stuck his head through. "Oh good, you're up."

Then turned and yelled down the hall. "She's awake!"

The noise in the hallway—all that bottled-up energy—exploded at once. Like someone cut the lid off.

Mark turned back. "Elliot's been pacing out here forever. Freya told him to sit down. He said you can't make me. She said watch me. He said that's not how authority works. She said it is now."

Almost laughed again.

Mark pulled back and the door opened wider.

Elliot walked in first.

"You gotta stop doing this. Passing out every time."

"I'll work on it."

"That's you saying no."

He walked over and pressed his hand down on top of my head.

"What are you doing?"

"Making sure you can still push back."

I shoved his hand off.

Elliot said, "Good. You're fine."

Stepped to the side, making space. His face relaxed but he didn't say it out loud.

Freya came in next. Stood beside Elliot. Looked at me. Said three words.

"Nice work yesterday."

Then stopped talking.

Those three words from Freya were basically a medal. Everyone knew.

Elliot glanced at her. Didn't speak, but his whole face went softer.

Milo walked in pulling Nadia behind him. Brought her straight to the bedside.

"You two catch up. I'm getting chairs."

Nadia said, "You're all giants. Just sit on the floor."

Milo said, "We take the floor, you get the chairs."

Nadia said, "Deal."

Turned to me. "You owe me the full story. When you're better. I've been trying to piece together what you've been up to."

"It's gonna take a while."

"I've got time."

Milo found a spot and dropped down, stretched his legs. Nadia sat next to him—close enough their shoulders almost touched. He didn't mention it. Just sat there.

Sophia and Cyrus walked in together.

Sophia held out some papers. Battle stats or something.

"Really? Right now?"

Sophia said, "You don't wanna read it yet."

"I didn't say—"

"So don't."

She folded the report and tucked it by the bed. "Tomorrow. Today you rest."

Cyrus stood there silent, then pulled a chocolate bar from his pocket and set it on the table.

"Here."

"Thanks."

"Yeah."

He moved to the corner and went back to not talking.

Mark came in and looked around for somewhere to sit. Gave up. Started talking instead.

"So about how good I was out there—"

Sophia said, "Third time you've mentioned that."

Mark said, "I can go for four."

Juniper said from somewhere, "Already noted."

Mark said, "Thanks, Juniper. Always fair."

Juniper walked in last.

Stopped in the doorway. Took in the packed room. Then looked at me.

"You look solid."

"Your medicine helped."

"Mostly you."

Pause.

"You did good work yesterday."

"Thanks."

Juniper said, "That's my student."

She stepped to the side, found a spot where she wasn't blocking traffic but could still see everyone.

Stood there watching the crowded, loud, afternoon-lit hospital room and slowly smiled.
