Chapter 214: It Already Has an Owner
Chapter 214: It Already Has an Owner
Evelyn's POV
The second Cyrus said those words, the whole battle line tightened.
I kept moving. Kept clearing the fighters in front of me. But my brain had already switched gears, running new numbers.
This vanguard? Disposable. Brandon was hanging back, watching how long they lasted, clocking our response time, picking his moment. Freya's intel had spelled out this exact playbook weeks ago. I just didn't think he'd move this fast.
Which meant the vanguard had done exactly what he wanted.
He's watching us, my wolf said.
I know.
The next twenty minutes blurred together. Vanguard cleared out—some captured, some restrained, the rest scattered. We didn't chase the runners. Waste of energy. Brandon was the actual problem.
When the battle line reformed, everyone just waited. Nobody said anything. We stood there, eyes on the horizon.
Then I saw him.
Brandon stepped into view at the territory border, a group trailing behind him. But it wasn't a charge formation. Loose. Almost lazy. Like a Sunday walk. He led from the front.
Big guy. Not rushing. Just strolling forward like he had nowhere else to be.
He stopped at a spot where everyone could see him clearly.
I watched him, something tight and uncomfortable settling in my chest. This guy had nearly killed me a few months back. Now he was standing at my territory's edge like he'd been invited.
He's way too sure of himself, my wolf said.
Yeah. Way too sure.
Brandon didn't bark orders. Didn't signal an attack. Just stood there, taking in the aftermath of the fight. Then he opened his mouth.
His voice hit different—Alpha bloodline doing its thing. Clear, loud enough for everyone to hear without him having to shout.
"Been waiting a long time for this land."
Real casual. Like he was just stating facts.
"Got every right to be here. My bloodline says this territory's mine eventually anyway."
Bloodline. Of course. Always bloodline with this guy.
He kept going. "Not here to start a war. Here to take over. Pack wants to bend the knee, I won't hold a grudge about what happened before today."
He stopped, eyes sweeping the crowd. Then he dropped my name.
"Evelyn."
Every muscle in my back locked up.
"You're my Luna. Meant to be. Time to come stand with me."
The mind link went dead silent for three whole seconds.
Then Mark's voice broke through. Wait, he means Evelyn? Our Evelyn?
Sophia said, Yep.
Mark said, Okay so the guy's completely nuts. Cool. We can keep fighting.
Milo cut in. Hold up. He said "meant to be"? Does he even know what that means?
Nadia said, Pretty sure he's got his own version.
Elliot said, Evie, you wanna punch him? Say the word.
I said, All of you shut up. I need to hear this.
Lucian said, Why? He's just wasting time.
I said, Juniper told me he's pulling magic together. Longer he talks, more distracted he is. Slows the whole thing down.
Link went quiet for a second.
Then Lucian said, ...Fair enough. This is actually pretty entertaining now.
They're loud, my wolf said.
Yeah. But they're not wrong. Brandon's definitely lost it.
Brandon was still talking. Going on about land history, pure bloodlines, how we didn't have a choice. Then someone moved.
Griffin stepped forward, walking right up to the edge of the battle line. He spoke up, voice quieter than Brandon's but just as clear.
"You're saying your bloodline gives you this land." Griffin stayed calm, but there was weight in his tone. "But people were bleeding for this place long before you showed up. That's not how bloodline works."
Brandon glanced at him. Didn't answer. Just kept talking.
That's when someone else stepped out. Alpha Adam.
He walked forward from the middle of the pack. Steady steps. Not fast, not slow. He moved to the front of the battle line, stopped where he and Brandon could see each other face to face.
Just stood there.
The two of them squared off across the gap.
Something in the air changed.
Not aura. Not pressure. Something harder to name. When a real Alpha showed up, you just knew which side you were on. No question.
Behind Alpha Adam, pack members started moving. Nobody told them to. They just stepped forward.
Not organized. Random, individual movements. But every single person moved closer. That collective shift said more than words ever could.
I stood there watching, chest going tight.
That's what a real Alpha looks like, I thought. Not bloodline. That.
Alpha Adam looked at Brandon. Spoke up.
Voice wasn't loud, but it carried.
"This land had an owner before you got here. That's not changing just because you say so."
Brandon smiled a little.
"Adam. You're getting old."
Alpha Adam said, "Still got it."
Brandon's smile stuck, but his eyes shifted—landed on me. Held there like he was sizing something up.
I didn't look away. Just stared back.
What's going through his head? my wolf asked.
No clue. But I hate how he's looking at me.
Brandon lifted his hand. Made a gesture to the people behind him.
Not an attack signal. Something else. Ceremonial, almost. His fingers drew a slow arc through the air, then curled into a fist.
I felt it. Magic stirring in the air, gathering, flowing toward Brandon.
Juniper's voice came from behind me, low and urgent:
"He's gathering magic, quick—"
