Chapter 104 The kingdoms. (Flashback)
Zyle.

“Your mother…”

And mine?

That wasn't what I expected.

Where should I start?

I didn't want to come off as a stalker who had run a background check on her entire family.

Yet I had promised to tell her anything.

I moved so she could be comfortable on my thighs.

“Well, just like you, your mum was a beta.” I stared at her, waiting for her reaction. She remained passive.

“But I don't know what you want to know about them.”

“Everything, down to when they take their daily baths.”

Okay.

That meant everything.

I cleared my throat and began to tell her the little I knew about her mother.

“Your mum was no ordinary beta. She was a pure-blooded one, and there weren't many pure-blooded betas during my father's time.

The sixteen kingdoms recorded only twelve pure-blooded betas at the time, and your mom was the only one with such a position in Lycos.”

“Oh… this place is called Lycos?”

“Yeah… weird name, isn't it?”

“Not at all. I like it.”

I smiled and continued.

“Your mom's father was the highest council chief. The highest council didn't enjoy meddling in the affairs of the autonomous clans. They were only called when something big happened… like… war, for instance… or an invasion that could wipe out the entire race.”

“So your mum never really saw her father, and her mom was long gone. She only had my mom and dad as her best friends.”

“Matilda was a free-spirited lady who loved to pluck flowers for my mom, plant flowers in the garden and watch them bloom. But Matilda never knew my mom was beginning to… beginning to fall in love with her.”

“Yes, as shocking as that sounds, they began to harbour feelings for each other… although they never really acted on the feelings.”

“But in Lycos, it wasn't acceptable for the promised Luna to fall in love with someone else. My mom was the promised Luna, betrothed to my dad since her birth.”

“Then again, I knew my dad never loved her. I saw the signs earlier on. I never knew he was actually in love with Matilda. A love that had formed into something dangerous. Something I can't quite name.”

“On the day of the mini celebration, your mom found out the person she was growing to love was finally becoming wed to his fated one.”

Roe was paying rapt attention to the story. I never knew she had not heard the story before.

Mom had told me all I needed to know before her demise, claiming she needed to let me in on what actually happened.

“Matilda was not happy as she should have been, seeing the one she loved in the arms of someone else.”

“So she ran away. Not away from the clan. But away from where the ceremony was taking place.”

“My mom found her, and the feelings they had bottled up for years spilled open. They couldn't deny the attraction they had for each other, and they also didn't care so much about what the clan was going to do to them.”

“They wanted to elope. Live a life where they could finally breathe and live together without regrets, but then the clan chief at that time… my grandfather, caught them.”

“Mom wasn't conscious when Matilda was banished, though, so I don't know what they had told your mom, but she was not in the clan by the time my mom woke up.”

“Father told Mom to her face that the one he had always loved was Matilda, and she should act her part as Luna while he acted his part as a loving husband until they separated. She obeyed, birthing her first twins and naming them.”

“Mom, who was usually quiet, more in love with solitude and your mom, began to go to battles. Battles that were too dangerous for even a handful of alphas. She began to fight through the pain of losing a loved one.”

“She used that as an opportunity to go outside the orb and search for your mom.”

“It took a long time before Mom finally saw Matilda. Years had passed, but not the love they had for each other.”

“When Mom saw Matilda, she saw someone else in the house too. A man and a child.”

“Mom felt Matilda was already living her best life, trying to fix what was broken in her life, so she went back to the clan and continued to raise her children until she gave birth to my sister, Mira.”

“She would lock herself in a room and sob until dawn, and I would sit before her door, helpless.”

“Years passed before she decided to visit Matilda again. She didn't see the man, but Matilda had already given birth to you. You were eight years old then. You looked… lost.”

I stared at her eyes, wondering how she must have looked then. Mom had said she had never seen a child so beautiful yet so detached from reality.

“Your mother had not told her anything about you and Flynn, but they seized the opportunity of finally meeting again to get what little intimacy they could get before they were caught again.”

“But one day of intimacy became two, then three, with them trying to meet up without letting you and Flynn find out and also without letting the clan know. They made a way for themselves, and I really admired that.”

“But then they stopped again. Not seeing each other for over a decade.”

“When Mom died, your mom's reaction was not far-fetched. I understood her.”

“But Dad… Dad felt like a burden had been lifted from him. I had thought he really grew to love her over the years… I thought wrong.”

“I see. No wonder she knew so much about your clan. She was from there too,” she said to herself.

“So did Mom usually take the form of a wolf as well?” she asked.

“She did. A golden wolf at that.”

“Golden?”

“Yeah. I had never seen one before, though, but I'm sure it was a spectacular sight for the eyes blessed enough to see it.”

She looked at me, a faint glow in her eyes.

“Why hasn't she transformed before me before?” she asked herself again.

“When she was banished, her amulet was taken by the council. She can only use her powers, but she can't transform.”

“Can I transform?”

I sighed. How do I break the news to her that even if she was a pure-blooded beta, she had the constitution of a human?

“You will… one day,” I said to myself in particular.

There was no need putting her off like that when there was even the slightest of opportunities.

“Fuck! That's just crazy. So there will be a day I become a wolf… like you?”

“Yup.”

“What about Flynn? Would he transform too?”

“Flynn took your father's constitution way too much. It spilled into his pure-blood features. His is likely impossible.”

“Oh.”

“Do you want to transform?”

I asked.

The moment I asked her, I remembered the words I had heard from the shaman some time ago.

“If the beta awakens her power and core energy, she would bring doom to the clan, the type that would mean the entirety of our lives would be wiped away. But her blood is the only way to save your mom.”

“Would it hurt?”

“Not when you've mastered how to control your wolf.”

‘The beta must never be taught the ways of the Awoken.’

“I'll teach you.”
