Chapter 82
Chapter 82
The silver barrel of the revolver pressed harder against Ari’s temple, the cold metal biting into her bruised skin. The commander’s breath was hot and ragged against her ear, his grip on her hair so tight it felt as though her scalp would tear away. Every survival instinct in her body screamed that she was at her absolute limit. The triple-dose of the stamina potion still coursed through her veins like liquid lead, and her physical form was completely broken from the trauma of the lab table.
But her spirit was not dead.
Across the cramped, red-lit cell, King Von stood frozen, his massive hands curled into claws that leaked dark blood where his nails dug into his palms. The air between the mates was thick with an invisible, agonizing tension. Von's royal panther aura pushed violently against the room’s silver dampeners, creating a low, crackling static that made the hairs on Ari's arms stand on end. He wanted to leap. She could see it in the frantic, golden fire of his amber eyes. But he couldn't risk the weapon at her head.
"Look at him, girl," the commander hissed, his cackle echoing off the damp limestone walls. "The great King of Ra, brought to his knees by a single piece of lead. You are going to tell your pride to stand down. You are going to be my ticket out of this mountain."
Ari didn't look at the commander. She kept her dull, yellow leopard eyes locked entirely on Von. In that silent, desperate gaze, a profound understanding passed between the two mates. She had spent weeks being a victim in this subterranean labyrinth, watched her body be violated, and felt the tragic, empty ache where her children should have been. She was done running. If she was the last of her lineage, she would not let that lineage die in total submission.
Deep within her chest, beneath the layers of physical agony and chemical suppression, a small, dormant spark flared. It wasn't her shifter spirit—the leopard was still too weak, bound by the silver cuffs around her raw wrists. It was the demi spirit. The ancient, godly mark that she shared with her captor. The very thing he had tried so desperately to steal from her flesh.
Give it to me, she thought, reaching down into the darkest depths of her consciousness, bypassing the pain, bypassing the grief. If it belongs to the gods, let the gods burn him.
The silver-grey sigil etched into her skin suddenly twitched.
The commander felt it first. A sudden, searing heat blossomed against his chest, right where his own matching sigil lay hidden beneath his tactical uniform. He gasped, his grip on Ari’s hair loosening by a fraction of an inch as a terrifying, violent vibration began to pulse directly from her body.
"What... what are you doing?" the commander stammered, his eyes widening in sudden, primal terror. "Stop it! I’ll pull the trigger! I swear to God, I’ll—"
Ari didn't give him the chance to finish. With a guttural, ragged scream that tore from her raw throat, she unleashed every single ounce of her remaining demi spirit energy. She didn't try to break the silver cuffs; instead, she turned her body into a physical conduit for the ancient magic.
The sigil on her chest erupted.
A blinding, supernova-white light exploded from her skin, filling the pitch-black cell with a radiance so pure and intense it completely swallowed the red emergency glare. The light wasn't just visual; it was a physical wave of spiritual force. The electronic silver dampeners in the ceiling shrieked, their circuits overloading and exploding in a shower of blue sparks as the ancient magic completely choked the facility's technology.
The commander screamed in agony. The blinding white light struck his eyes at point-blank range, burning through his retinas and leaving him completely, temporarily sightless. His equilibrium shattered, and his hand shook violently, the silver revolver firing a wild shot into the stone ceiling as he stumbled backward, releasing his hold on her hair.
"My eyes! I can't see!" the commander shrieked, dropping to his knees, his hands clawing at his face as the matching sigil on his own chest burned like a branding iron, rejecting the stolen power he had tried to claim.
The moment the light flared, King Von moved.
Without the silver dampeners suppressing his core, his royal panther spirit surged forward with the speed of a lightning strike. He didn't even need to shift back into his beast form; the kinetic force of his human sprint cracked the stone floor beneath his boots. In less than a fraction of a second, he crossed the distance of the cell, a black shadow slicing through the fading white radiance.
Before the commander could even level his weapon again, Von’s massive hand clamped around the man’s wrist. With a sickening, resonant crack, Von crushed the bones of the commander's arm, forcing the silver revolver to clatter uselessly to the dirt floor.
The commander let out a high-pitched, pathetic wail, but Von wasn't finished. With his other hand, he grabbed the front of the man's tactical vest, lifting his entire body off the ground and slamming him violently against the rear stone wall of the cell. The impact sent a shudder through the limestone, a spray of dust falling over them as Von pinned the monster who had tortured his mate.
"You like to play with fire, human?" Von whispered, his face inches from the blinded, weeping commander. His fangs were fully extended, his breath a hot, predatory growl that smelled of blood and old earth. "You like to test the limits of a royal line?"
"Von..."
The weak, cracking sound of Ari’s voice made the king freeze. He didn't drop the commander, but his amber eyes snapped down to the floor.
The exertion of triggering the sigil had completely drained Ari’s remaining life force. The white light had vanished, leaving only the dim, smoky red of the corridor to illuminate her small form. She was collapsing, her knees giving out as she slid toward the cold stone floor, her eyes rolling back into her head as the darkness of the comatose state threatened to drag her under once more.
