Chapter 61 :JUDGMENT WITHOUT MERCY
The council chamber had never felt so cold.
Stone pillars rose high above the gathered assembly their surfaces etched with ancient rulings that had shaped generations of pack law. Every word ever spoken here carried consequence. Every decision echoed beyond the walls and into bloodlines.
Amanda stood at the center.
She was no longer required to kneel.
That alone terrified her more than chains ever could.
Andrew remained beside her shoulders squared jaw rigid eyes burning with barely contained fury. Warriors lined the edges of the hall hands hovering near weapons though no attack had yet been ordered.
Yet.
Elder Marrek rose slowly leaning heavily on his staff. His gaze lingered on Amanda not with cruelty but with something far worse.
Calculation.
“The bond remains,” he said quietly. “But the title does not.”
A ripple of murmurs moved through the chamber.
Amanda lifted her chin refusing to look away.
Elder Kareth stepped forward next her voice sharp and unwavering.
“Without Luna authority the Alpha bond becomes unstable. History records this outcome clearly. It invites fracture rebellion and imbalance.”
Andrew growled low in his chest.
“She chose sacrifice so others could live,” he snapped. “You would punish her for it.”
Kareth did not flinch.
“We would contain the risk.”
Amanda’s breath caught.Risk.
Not person. Not survivor. Not savior,Risk.
Elder Marrek raised his staff again calling silence.
“The First Howl has been awakened,” he continued. “That alone reshapes every priority we hold. A former Luna bound to an Alpha under altered law is no longer a protector. She is an unpredictable variable.”
Amanda felt something settle deep within her chest. Not despair.Resolve.
“So you plan to exile me,” she said calmly.
The elders exchanged glances.
“No,” Marrek replied. “Exile allows freedom.”
The word landed heavily.
Andrew turned sharply.“What are you saying.”
Marrek met his gaze steadily.
“She must be placed under restriction until stability is restored.”
Amanda felt Andrew tense beside her muscles coiling as power surged dangerously close to the surface.“You will not cage her.”
“This is not a prison,” Kareth countered. “It is containment.”
Amanda exhaled slowly.
“And who decides when I am no longer dangerous.”Silence.
That was answer enough.
Elder Marrek sighed deeply.
“You were Luna,” he said. “You embodied balance. Now you exist between structures. That makes you vulnerable to influence we cannot predict.”Amanda nodded once.
“Then your fear is not of me,” she said softly. “It is of what I represent.”
Kareth’s eyes hardened.
“You represent instability.”
Andrew stepped forward placing himself half a step ahead of Amanda instinctively shielding her.
“She represents choice,” he snarled. “And courage none of you had when the price was named.”
The room crackled with tension.
Elder Marrek’s voice sharpened.
“Alpha Andrew if you obstruct this ruling you will force us to question your leadership.”
The words struck like a blade.Andrew froze.
Amanda felt the bond surge violently then tighten as if bracing.
She reached out touching his arm grounding him.
“Let me speak,” she whispered.
Reluctantly he stilled.
Amanda stepped forward alone.
“You fear I will become something uncontrolled,” she said. “You fear the First Howl left residue within me. You fear my bond may fracture your laws.”
She looked slowly around the chamber meeting every gaze.
“You are correct to fear it.”Gasps rippled.
“But understand this,” she continued voice steady unwavering. “If you restrain me you do not reduce danger. You concentrate it.”
Elder Kareth scoffed.A threat will not sway us.”
“It is not a threat,” Amanda replied. “It is an observation.”
Andrew watched her heart pounding painfully with pride and dread.
Elder Marrek studied her closely.
“What do you propose.”
Amanda inhaled deeply.
“I will submit to observation,” she said. “But not confinement. I will move freely under escort of my choosing. Andrew remains Alpha without interference. And if my condition worsens I will remove myself from the pack willingly.”
Murmurs surged louder this time.
Kareth shook her head sharply.
“Unacceptable.”
Andrew’s eyes flashed.
“Then you will have war,” he said coldly.
The chamber erupted,Threats again.”
“Alpha arrogance.”“Control him.”
Elder Marrek slammed his staff down hard.
“Enough.”Silence fell abruptly,He turned to Andrew.
“You have already entangled yourself with forces beyond council reach. If we press further we risk splintering the packs.”
He turned to Amanda.
“You will be placed under provisional status,” he declared. “Monitored. Restricted from political influence. Any sign of instability will result in immediate isolation.”Andrew snarled.
“And who enforces this.”Marrek’s gaze hardened.“The council.”
Amanda felt a chill crawl up her spine.
Not from the ruling.
From the certainty that this was only the first move.
She bowed her head slowly.
“I accept,” she said.
Andrew spun toward her shocked.
“Amanda.”
She looked up at him eyes fierce.
“This buys time,” she whispered. “And time is something we desperately need.”
The elders began dispersing already discussing measures and watchers.
Amanda turned toward the exit.
The moment she crossed the threshold pain lanced through her chest sharp sudden blinding. She gasped stumbling as Andrew caught her.
“Amanda.”
She clutched his arm breath ragged.
“The tether,” she whispered. “It just tightened.”
Andrew’s heart dropped.
Far away beyond the veil Ethan screamed as unseen forces shifted.
Somewhere deep within the fortress the First Howl stirred restless.
And above them all the council’s decision set events into motion that could no longer be undone.
Amanda lifted her head eyes distant.
“They think I am the danger,” she murmured.
Andrew’s voice was grim.
“They have no idea what they just unleashed.”
The floor beneath them trembled faintly.
Not collapse.
Movement.
Something was waking.
