Chapter 28 WHEN SILENCE BREAKS
The moment Amanda spoke, the chamber responded.
Not with violence.
With restraint.
The collapsing walls slowed, stone grinding against stone as if the fortress itself had paused to listen. The Guardian remained motionless, yet its presence pressed heavily against every mind in the room, weighing intention rather than action.
Andrew turned toward Amanda, disbelief flashing across his face before resolve replaced it. “You’re letting him speak,” he said quietly. “Not trusting him.”
“I know,” she replied, her gaze never leaving Damian. “But ignoring him may cost more than listening ever could.”
Damian studied her closely now, amusement fading into something sharper. Respect perhaps. Or calculation.
“You learn quickly,” he said. “That alone explains why the Nexus bends toward you.”
Ethan stepped closer to the platform, tension coiling through his frame. “Say what you came to say,” he growled. “Every second you stand here makes things worse.”
Damian’s eyes flicked briefly toward the Guardian. “This place does not like time wasted,” he agreed. “Neither do those coming.”
At his gesture, the restrained wolves behind him groaned softly. One collapsed to their knees. Another struggled to remain upright, eyes hollow with exhaustion.
Amanda’s chest tightened.
“You’re using them to force sympathy,” she said.
“I am using truth,” Damian replied. “These are the remnants of border clans that fell when balance collapsed. And they are only the beginning.”
The Guardian shifted.
The floor pulsed beneath their feet, sending tremors through the chamber. Cracks spidered outward from the platform, glowing faintly with an unfamiliar hue. Amanda felt it instantly.
This energy was not Luna born.
It was older.
Andrew followed her expression. “You sense it too.”
She nodded. “Something beneath the fortress is waking. Something that does not answer to pack law or prophecy.”
Damian exhaled slowly. “That would be the reason I am here.”
The Guardian’s voice cut through the tension like a blade.
External convergence detected.
The air thickened.
Visions flooded Amanda’s mind without warning. Burning territories. Wolves tearing into one another beneath a red sky. Ancient symbols collapsing into dust. A force moving between realms, consuming power rather than wielding it.
She staggered, silver light flaring instinctively as Andrew caught her before she fell.
“What did you see?” he demanded.
“Endings,” she whispered. “Not just ours.”
Ethan’s fists clenched. “You’re saying this thing wants everything.”
Damian nodded once. “It devours sources of power. Nexus lines. Alpha blood. Luna essence.” His gaze returned to Amanda. “You would be its final prize.”
Silence slammed down hard.
Andrew’s voice dropped dangerously low. “Then you brought this thing here.”
“No,” Damian said firmly. “It was already moving. I followed its trail.”
The Guardian stepped forward at last, each movement fracturing stone beneath its weight.
Alliance offered. Risk acknowledged.
The pressure intensified again, forcing the traitors still standing to cry out as they were driven to their knees. Riven clutched his head, screaming as the fortress stripped away the last of his resolve.
Amanda felt no satisfaction. Only sorrow.
“This is what happens when fear leads,” she said softly.
The Guardian turned its gaze back to her.
Decision remains incomplete.
Damian’s eyes locked onto Amanda’s. “You do not have to decide now,” he said. “But when the veil falls, hesitation will cost lives.”
Andrew tightened his grip on her hand. “You are not facing this alone.”
Ethan stepped beside them, expression hard but loyal. “Whatever comes, we stand together.”
The ground shook violently.
From far below, a sound echoed upward.
Not a roar.
A laugh.
Cold. Distant. Patient.
The fortress lights flickered wildly as the Guardian stiffened.
Containment failing.
Amanda’s silver flames erupted outward as the chamber began to fracture entirely.
And from the deepest abyss beneath the fortress, something ancient opened its eyes.
