Chapter 64 THE SHADOW THAT KNOWS OUR NAMES

Chapter 64 THE SHADOW THAT KNOWS OUR NAMES
Zara’s POV

The academy alarms didn’t stop for almost an hour.

Red lights pulsed against the walls like the building itself was bleeding, and the sound, the shrill, metallic shriek of danger, felt like claws dragging up my spine. Kai held my hand through all of it, refusing to let go even when the air became hard to breathe, even when people screamed in the hallway, even when Rex mind-linked him a thousand times demanding we open the door.

We didn’t.

We stayed like that, braced against each other, breathing the same air, fighting not to drown in whatever force had decided to wake beneath us.

Then....silence.

The alarms cut as suddenly as they’d come, like someone had reached into the walls and torn the wires out with their teeth. The lights dimmed. The building groaned, metal settling uneasily into place.

It felt like the academy was exhaling over our heads.

Kai’s thumb brushed over the back of my hand; grounding, calm, steady.

“You okay?” he whispered.

I wanted to say yes. I wanted to lie.

But the truth was icy in my mouth.
“No.”

He nodded like he expected that... like he knew lying wouldn’t fix anything.

The sheets were tangled around us, our bodies half-covered, half-naked from the sleep we never fully reached. My skin still burned everywhere he’d touched me. My lips were swollen, my heartbeat uneven. It felt sinful to want him right now....like love in the middle of war was too indulgent, too human.

And yet…

My body leaned into his side the moment he shifted closer, shameless and hungry.

Being near him silenced the buzzing in my skull, quieted the shadows whispering beneath my skin.

Without him, I was chaos.

With him, I was dangerous....but not lost.

His fingers slid under my jaw, tilting my face toward him.

“Zara.”

My name sounded like a prayer.

“Something is coming,” I whispered.

“And it’s coming for us.”

His jaw clenched, muscles flexing beneath warm skin, eyes burning that deep gold-green that made my wolves stir.

“Then we don’t run,” he answered.

“We make it wish it never came.”

I wanted to smile at that....God, I wanted to drink those words and live in them....but the moment was shattered by heavy, pounding footsteps in the hallway.

Someone was running toward our room.
Multiple someone.

The smell hit me first... metal, sweat, blood, and ozone.

“Guards,” Kai muttered.

I didn’t wait for them to knock.
I threw the door open.

Rex, Luna, and Mira stood there in tight formation, eyes wide, weapons drawn, breathing like they’d sprinted across the entire building.

But the guards behind them?
Their eyes were wrong.

They glowed faint silver.
Not wolf silver.

Not devourer silver.
Something older.

Something colder.
Luna hissed, stepping backwards.

“Zara, get inside”

Too late.

The nearest guard snapped forward like his bones were breaking and reforming beneath his skin. His jaw cracked sideways with an audible click, stretching too wide for his face, teeth sharpening like needles.

Kai was already moving.

He slammed me behind him and shifted mid-air, wolf claws erupting from his hands, spine elongating as fur rippled over his skin... not full transformation, just enough to become lethal.

He caught the guard by the throat and threw him down the hallway, body crashing into the opposite wall.

But the guard just stood up.
Like nothing happened.

Like pain wasn’t a language he understood.
Mira cursed under her breath.

“What in the actual hell...”

Kai’s growl rolled out of him...low, furious, animal.

“They’re possessed.”

The possessed guards stepped forward as one.

Behind them, a voice spoke.

Calm. Measured. Familiar.

“Subject Night and Subject Kai,” Dr. Voss said without showing her face.

“You will come with us.”
Every muscle in my body tightened.

Mira grabbed my arm, nails digging in panic.

“Don’t let her take you again....”

But my vision blurred.
Voices whispered.

Memories flickered.
Pain pulsed hot beneath my ribs.

The devourer inside me woke up like molten fire.

No. Not yet. Not now.

Kai sensed it instantly, reaching back, grabbing my face with both hands.

“Zara....stay with me.”

The guards moved.

Rex crashed into them from the side, claws ripping through flesh that didn’t bleed. Luna shattered one’s spine against the wall; it kept moving anyway, head dangling uselessly.

Then....

My body snapped forward.
I didn’t choose the movement.
I didn’t think.

My wolves took over.
Sound vanished.
Colour dimmed.

The hallway stretched like a dream tunnel collapsing into itself.

And then....

Silver exploded from my palms.
Not fire.

Not lightning.
Something between.
Pure devourer energy.

It erupted outward in a violent shockwave, tearing through the hallway like a hurricane made of star metal.

Every guard hit the floor.
Even Kai staggered.

I stood shaking, panting, burning from the inside out.

Rex stared at me like I’d just killed a god.

“Holy sht, Zara....”

Mira wasn’t looking at the guards.
She was looking at me.

Her voice broke.
“You’re losing control again.”

Kai grabbed my waist.
“No,” he said, fierce.

“She controlled that....she pulled it back.”
I barely heard them.

Because someone else had woken up.
Someone else inside me.

A voice I knew.
A voice I feared.

A voice I remembered from my dreams.
"Devourer of worlds," it whispered.

"You are late."

My heartbeat stuttered.
Kai touched my cheek.

“Zara?”

I didn’t answer.
Couldn’t.

The whisper spoke again...
"They opened the wrong door."

Then silence.
Sudden, violent, absolute.

My knees buckled.
Kai caught me before I hit the floor, holding me against his chest, fingers threading into my hair.

“It’s okay,” he breathed.
“I’ve got you.”

I clutched his shirt like it was the only solid thing left in the world.

“Kai...," My voice shook...

“someone is inside my head.”
He pressed his forehead to mine.

“Then we kill whoever put them there.”
The words should’ve terrified me.
Instead, I wanted to kiss him.

Right there, against the wall, covered in the dust of battle, bleeding adrenaline and hunger and love.

His eyes dropped to my lips.
Mine did the same.

The world roared around us....Mira shouting orders, Luna cursing in two languages, Rex ripping apart another rising guard.

But all I saw was Kai.
All I felt was heat.
Need.Connection.

My fingers slid beneath his jaw.
His breath hitched.

He leaned closer....slow, reverent, like he was asking permission.

Our lips brushed...soft lightning.
And for one stolen second, nothing else mattered.

Then....The floor beneath us rumbled.
Everyone froze.

Luna whispered, voice thin.

“Something is waking under the building.”
Kai pulled me tighter, chest rising and falling fast.

“Voss did this,” he snarled.

“She’s calling something here.”

Rex drew in a shaking breath.
“No… she already called it.”

Mira pointed down the hall.
At the far end, a shadow stood.
Not a person.Not a wolf. Something taller.
Something shifting.Something watching.

It tilted its head slowly, studying me like a predator that already knew I’d run.

The hallway temperature dropped.
Every hair on my body raised.

Kai growled, stepping in front of me again....but the shadow moved faster than sight.

It appeared inches away from us without sound.

The lights overhead shattered.
Luna screamed. Rex roared.
Mira raised a silver blade...

And the thing whispered in a voice older than the academy itself:

“The devourer has awakened.”
Its hand...if it was a hand...reached for me.
Kai slammed his body into mine, turning us, shielding me completely.

“You want her,” he snarled, voice breaking into wolf growl.

"You go through me.”

The shadow did not flinch.
It did not breathe.
It simply leaned forward...

And whispered Kai’s name like it had been waiting centuries to say it.

“Kairo.”

Kai froze.

My heart stopped.
That name… he hadn’t told anyone that name.

Not even me.

The shadow smiled without a mouth.
“You should have stayed dead.”

Everything in the world held its breath.
Then chaos returned.

Guards screamed.
Mira attacked.

Luna shifted mid-air.
Rex howled orders.

But the shadow only stared at us.
At me. At Kai.

And said the one sentence that changed everything:

“She is the end of your world, Kairo.”
Kai’s hand tightened on mine.

And he answered without hesitation, voice low, fearless, terrifying in its certainty...

“Then I’ll end the world for her first.”

Something ancient laughed.
And the hallway lights flickered out completely.
