Chapter 19 Pain Upon Pain
Kai's POV
Dr.Voss threw the water jug across the table.
"Why have you been unreachable?" She sneered quite angry.
"I've been performing my duties as a student" I responded.
"Student... My foot. I brought you here so you do exactly like I say." She yelled angrily.
Who pissed her off today. She was turning into a big bad wolf.
"Now answer my question correctly." She said, firmly.
"What have you been up to?'
"Well... I've just been around. Trying to clear my head." I responded, not truthfully but I'm sure I didn't give that part away.
"And Zara... Any update?" She asked.
"Nothing. Subject Night hasn't had any funny encounters." I responded.
She moved closer till she stood in front of me.
"You know you can tell me anything." She said softly.
"I know Dr. Voss. But unfortunately there's really nothing to tell."
She just nodded before turning to my back.
Just then she held my left wrist from behind and pierced it open her nails.
Pain seared through me like bullets being fired in the gun field.
"I don't know what you did. But when I call you, I expect quick response." She said harshly.
My eyes began to close I was struggling between consciousness and unconsciousness. Everything was too much. I couldn't place the words she kept saying as I was in and out of consciousness.
"Next time, you think carefully about playing games with me." She said before I finally let go.
I woke up a few hours later to see myself still on the ground.
"Great, you're back!" She said wickedly.
I didn't know what to respond to that... What was she on about? I tried remembering what happened when I came into her office but it was like nothing happened.
Just then, Mira came into her office.
"Help him to his feet Mira." She ordered.
Mira came over to where I laid on the ground and helped me to my feet. It was like she smelt something on me that made her recoil inwardly but she dared not show any emotion on her face.
"Now.... When I send for you, do well to respond quickly." Dr. Voss responded.
"Yes Dr. Voss." I responded like a loyal puppet.
Right then, I knew that something was up.
It felt like I was a different person entirely.
Somehow, I had been reformated. Mira just stared at the wall in front. I think she knew that something was up.
Why had I woken up on the floor? Why was I having lapses in my memory.
Leave now Kai." Dr. Voss said not staring at my direction.
I nodded my head before leaving her office. I was going to hang around her hall until Mira came out. Just maybe I could know what was going on. It seemed Dr.
Voss had turned her chair to face Mira.
I stood outside her door to eavesdrop on their conversation.
"It seems you've become too friendly with Kai and Zara." She said.
"That's the only way I can get information to be able to report back to you." Mira had responded nonchalantly.
"The same information that I've gotten no update about in days or should I say weeks." Dr. Voss sneered.
"I've tried... Nothing is happening." Mira replied cooly.
"Are you sure?" She taunted.
"Or have you gotten too soft for them."
"Maybe I should remind you of the reason I hired you as my assistant."
"I remember very clearly the reason for my appointment." She fired back.
"Ahh!! Fiesty much!" Dr. Voss said laughing wickedly.
I don't know what happened at that moment but then Mira started speaking. It wasn't of her own power and she tried fighting against whatever it was.
"I didn't take you to be a liar." Dr. Voss said.
"Zara has had certain moments. Nothing too serious. She passed the mind test."
She said.
"Nothing could be found."
"That's impossible. Her mind is supposed to be an open book." Dr. Voss said.
"Well.... That's what happened in her own case. Nothing could be found." She repeated again.
"How?"
"Give me something more." Dr. Voss said.
"Why don't you run the test on her and stop trying to crack through my head." Mira yelled.
Then I heard something crack the wall.
"If I die, I won't be of any use to you. So stop playing around." She said rudely.
It seems Dr. Voss was taken aback by her outrage because she didn't say anything for the longest time.
"Fine. Give me the updates on time. It's very important and necessary." She said in a dismissing tone.
"Too much control on people can make them slip from your hands." Mira said before stepping out of the office.
I noticed her movements so I shifted quickly to another corner in the hallway.
Why did it seem like that last message was directed to me. Like I was the recipient of being under too much control by Dr. Voss. Mira saw me standing by a corner in the hallway. Just as I was about to speak, she raised her hands to her mouth, as a way to shush me up.
My wolf hated being shut up but at this point, it felt necessary. She walked past me and made a move to tell me to keep following her. I walked with her till we came to a dark corner. She turned my back and ripped off my clothes. I wanted to protest, but at the same time, something within me told me to calm down and trust her.
I felt my back being sliced in a straight line. The pain felt like fire burning ones skin but I had to refrain from shouting even though at that oot, I just wanted to kill someone, make them feel how I was feeling at that point.
I was silent for a few minutes, letting Mira do whatever it was that she was doing. I heard beeps around us, probably her tech devices playing in motion.
"You're okay to speak now." She said as she covered up my cloth.
"What the fuck was that?" I questioned.
"Somehow, Dr. Voss may have realized that she had been dubbed." She responded truthfully.
"When I dubbed you, I didn't tell you to start snubbing her." She warned.
"I think I let the piece of freedom get into me." I replied.
"Oh well! We need to be very careful from now on." She said.
"The frequency is low. This particular device she installed in you is different from what I work with it. It'll take time to decide it."
"Respond to her when necessary. I've lowered the frequency so she won't hear audible sounds clearly."
"I guess, we'll do with that then." I responded.
"Thank you."
"It's nothing really." She said giving me a small smile.
"Why are you two together in an enclosed space?" I heard Zara ask.
