Chapter 239: The Council of Elders and Kaelan

Chapter 239: The Council of Elders and Kaelan
Eve of the Council — Caleb's Office, Sacred Moon Manor

The sun was setting over Sacred Moon, casting copper hues through the office windows. Around the large dark wooden table, Caleb, Lya, and Drake leaned over a marked parchment. At the center, one word had been circled several times: "Kaelan."

Lya sat comfortably, Kaelan asleep in a sling against her chest, her fingers absentmindedly stroking the baby's tiny membranous wings.

Caleb sighed, hands folded before him. "Well. We won’t be able to hide the wings."

Drake raised an eyebrow. "Unless we wrap the baby in a royal tablecloth... But I doubt Her Majesty would approve."

Lya smiled, amused. "Even folded, they’re visible. And it’d be worse if he starts to wiggle."

"Or sneeze," Drake added, gesturing to the edge of his sleeve, visibly scorched. "Let me remind you my right shoulder barely survived this morning."

Caleb raised a finger. "It was a tiny flame."

"Yes. But focused. Precise. And furiously hot."

Lya stifled a laugh. "We’ll have to neutralize their reactions before they even open their mouths."

Drake nodded. "Best way is to anticipate their fears. Be upfront. If they sense we’re hiding something, they’ll shut down."

Caleb grimaced. "Elias and Magnus are just waiting for that. One misstep..."

Lya gently tapped Kaelan's tiny fingers. "Then we stay ahead. We explain his appearance, his calmness, his perfect health. And we stress that he is... a blessing."

Drake smiled. "A genetic miracle. Too cute to be dangerous — except to my jackets."

Caleb crossed his arms. "We’ll have to manage the scrutiny on Lya too. There will be questions about the dragons."

Drake softened slightly. "We’ll have Myrria and Soraya in the background of the room. Just visible enough to remind them that the dragons are calm, loyal, and present."

Kaelan stirred gently in his sling, groaning in his sleep. A wing twitched, a foot peeked out.

Lya murmured: "He’s so small... and already the center of an entire world."

Caleb tilted his head, resting a hand gently on the child's back. "Because he embodies what many fear. And what others hope for."

Drake leaned back in his chair with a grin. "Then let’s show them they’re right. That he’s more than they ever imagined."

A peaceful, dense silence settled.

Then Kaelan sneezed.

A tiny puff of orange escaped, licking the edge of the parchment — which curled in on itself with the scent of scorched wood.

Drake, without flinching: "I suggest we bring buckets of water tomorrow. Or a fireproof blanket."

Caleb sighed. "He’s not a weapon, he’s a baby."

Drake snorted. "Tell that to my sleeve."

Royal Pack House — Main Entrance, Morning of the Council

The sun slowly rose above Sacred Moon, bathing the cobblestones of the courtyard in a pale golden light. Everything appeared peaceful... yet the air thrummed with a muted, almost palpable tension.

At the entrance to the royal pack house, the doors stood wide open. A fresh breeze fluttered the banners bearing Sacred Moon's emblem, the royal couple’s crest flying high and unmistakable.

Malick stood, solid as stone, in his impeccably tailored uniform. Beside him, Rhogar, towering in his human form, arms crossed over his massive chest, and Theon, poised and elegant, his gaze calm but piercing.

As soon as the first car stopped in the courtyard, Malick stepped forward.

"Council or not, I set the tone," Rhogar murmured with a discreet smile.

Theon replied quietly without looking at him: "A smile wouldn’t kill you."

Rhogar grunted softly, which was his version of a smile.

The doors opened.

Adonis was the first to step out, walking slowly, leaning on his ornate cane. His sharp eyes brightened as he recognized Malick.

"Gamma. As unshakable as ever."

"Councillor Adonis," Malick inclined his head, respectful but not overly warm.

Behind him, Elias, face neutral, was already scanning the environment like a predator in unfamiliar territory. His gaze lingered briefly on Rhogar, then Theon... before returning to Malick.

"You increased security?"

Malick didn’t blink. "It was never reduced."

Magnus and Niko emerged next. The former, haughty, scanned the facade of the pack house with a skeptical eye. The latter, arms crossed, seemed ready to make a disparaging comment... but thought better of it upon seeing Rhogar and Theon.

Theon stepped forward, arms at his sides, posture both noble and imposing.

"As members of the royal pack, we welcome you."

Rhogar added, voice deep and commanding: "You are under our roof, protected by our law, and witnesses to our legacy."

A tense silence followed. Then Elias, slightly inclined, said: "This promises to be... an interesting council."

Adonis smirked. "Better an interesting council than a boring funeral."

Malick gestured for the Elders to follow him inside.

"The room is ready. The royal couple will join you shortly."

As the elders entered the grand hall, their footsteps echoing against dark marble, the message was clear: here, dragons and wolves stood united.

And this council would be... unforgettable.

Council Chamber — Royal Pack House

The chamber bore no resemblance to the archaic council rooms some Elders still cherished. Here, light came from an adaptive ceiling, soft and diffused, adjusted to suit the sensitive eyes of both dragons and wolves.

The central oval table was polished black wood, edged with a metallic inlay engraved with the royal crest. Each seat had a small personal screen displaying the name and emblem of the represented pack.

The Elders sat in silence, a moment of suspended breath.

Then the sliding doors opened.

Caleb entered first, tall and composed, dressed in a simple black uniform adorned only with the golden Alpha royal brooch. His gaze did not waver.

Lya followed, a gentle smile on her lips, draped in a flowing pearl-colored gown, holding Kaelan in her arms.

The silence deepened.

The baby did not cry. On the contrary, his large eyes took in the room with the uncanny awareness often seen in hybrid children. His membranous wings, soft and translucent, folded gently against his back like a delicate veil.

At the sight, Niko stiffened but kept silent.

Elias narrowed his eyes slightly, leaning forward to examine the child more closely.

Adonis, ever himself, smiled. A whisper of wonder passed his lips.

Magnus remained impassive, but his fingers tapped the armrest of his chair.

Drago seemed lost in a thought he did not voice, his gaze fixed on the baby.

Lya stopped a few steps from the table, and Caleb spoke clearly, his tone firm yet respectful:

"Members of the Council, we thank you for answering this extraordinary convocation."

He turned slightly, his gaze softening as he looked at Lya, then gestured to the child.

"This is Kaelan. Our son. The Ardent Heir."

A chill swept through the room.

"He is the fruit of our union, but also the symbol of a future where strength does not oppose diversity. We do not ask you to accept him blindly. But to acknowledge that he was born under the blessing of our pack, and that he deserves his place among us."

Lya stepped gently toward the table, turning Kaelan slightly in her arms so all could see him.

A sudden sneeze shook the child, and a golden spark escaped his mouth in a brief but visible flash.

A puff. A dragon's breath.

Drake, standing in the back, stifled a laugh with his fist.

Niko exclaimed: "And you want us to see that... as a normal heir?!"

Caleb looked at him without a word.

It was Adonis who responded, placing his palm flat on the table: "No. He is not a normal heir. That’s precisely why he deserves our attention. And perhaps our respect."

After a long silence, Elias murmured: "It will take time for the other packs to accept him. But... he is here. He breathes. He is strong."

Magnus stood slowly. His gaze rested on Caleb, then Lya, and finally the child.

"As long as he defends the realm... as long as he remembers who he is... then so be it."

Then, slowly, he sat back down.

Silence returned, heavier now... but filled with latent respect. A beginning of acceptance.

Lya whispered softly to her son: "There you go, little Ardent. Your first step among your own."
