Chapter 236: A Day of Rest… Or Almost
Chapter 236: A Day of Rest… Or Almost
Sunlight filtered through the bedroom blinds, casting pale rays over the still-creased sheets. Outside, Sacred Moon was slowly waking, but here, in this quiet room, time seemed to have stopped.
Kaelan was still asleep, curled up against his mother. His tiny wings had naturally folded in his sleep, as if they’d never been a mystery. Lya, lying on her side, watched over him with the gentleness only new mothers possess. Despite the fatigue still clinging to her features, she looked at peace—more radiant than ever.
Caleb stood by the window, wearing only dark cotton pants, his bare feet resting on the warm floor. His upright posture betrayed a constant, primal vigilance. Alpha or not, he hadn’t slept much.
In his hands, a tablet was lit up, displaying a draft of an announcement—not for the press, but for the pack. His pack.
Official Announcement:
"Sacred Moon grows.
Last night, an heir was born.
He is healthy, as is his mother.
He already carries the breath of our pack and the strength of both lineages.
Thank you to those who watched with us, near or far."
He was about to send it when the door opened softly.
Soraya entered first, carrying a tray. Warm bread, honey, a small jar of fruit compote, and two steaming coffees. Her eyes moved from Caleb to Lya, then to the tiny sleeping figure between them.
“The queen’s first breakfast,” she whispered with a smile.
Caleb raised an eyebrow. “So you see me as a queen now?”
Soraya shot back without missing a beat, “You? More like a sleepless guard dog whose favorite toy got stolen.”
Lya giggled, her cheeks flushing pink.
Myrria followed, notebook and tablet in hand. She shared a knowing look with Lya.
“I’ll need to examine his wings later today. Nothing invasive—just a reading of residual magic. Also… I think we’ll need to open a brand-new medical file.”
“Of course,” Lya replied. “But after breakfast.”
And just when things couldn’t get more surreal, Bastien stepped in last, holding a potted flower.
“A gift from the medical team,” he said simply. “And… the birth record. It’s ready to be filled in.”
Lya reached for the small white leather-bound book, embroidered with gold. A new symbol had been added to the cover during the night: a dragon curled protectively around a wolf.
She looked at Caleb.
And for the first time since the birth, they softly whispered their son’s name together: “Kaelan.”
One hour later
The announcement had spread like wildfire, sweeping through the pack in a joyous wave. It was shared telepathically among the elite, displayed on communal screens in public areas, and announced aloud in more remote neighborhoods by the elders.
"An heir is born. The fiery heir."
At the Three Fangs bakery, Master Deran, the former warrior turned baker, wiped his hands on his flour-dusted apron. A smile split his grizzled beard as he glanced at his apprentices.
“Get the moon-flower dough ready. Today, we’re making blazing brioches. One for every child in the neighborhood. And one for me, obviously.”
In the school quarter, the teachers had stopped classes without needing to consult one another. A projector cast a stylized silhouette of an entwined dragon and wolf on the wall, while students—young and older—let their joy explode through paint, chalk drawings, or autumn leaf collages.
A little girl raised a drawing and shouted, “It’s Kaelan! He has wings like a hero!”
In the alleys of the southern district, off-duty young warriors had organized a small symbolic procession. Nothing loud or official—just a few drums, a howling cry from the pack, and a banner featuring a stylized sun within a fang.
At the infirmary, one of the nurses, a soft-spoken she-wolf with shining eyes, turned to her colleague.
“Can you believe it? That baby will grow up here. In our hallways, in our forests. He’ll see everything.”
In the hanging gardens, an elderly woman with a hunched back paused before a ritual stone. With a worn tool, she gently carved a new symbol beside Caleb’s.
She murmured,
“May the pack protect him. And may he remember those who walked before him.”
Finally, at Sacred Moon’s entrance, two young guards—too new to have known the previous Alpha’s reign—looked at each other after reading the posted message.
“You think he’ll be like the Alpha?” one asked.
His companion shrugged with a grin.
“I just hope he bites like him. But for now... he’ll probably just cry and sleep.”
They laughed and returned to their watch, more vigilant than ever.
The Next Morning – Back at the Family Manor
The black SUV came to a gentle stop on the gravel drive. The sun rose slowly behind the trees, bathing the manor’s façade in warm, comforting light. A curtain rustled at an upstairs window.
Seconds later, the front door flew open.
“They’re here! They’re here!”
Loric—still in his pajamas but with his hair neatly combed (thanks to Elora, obviously)—raced down the stairs like a controlled whirlwind. A plushie clutched under his arm, he bounded onto the porch with all the dignity of a tiny prince, then froze at the sight of Lya stepping out of the SUV, Kaelan in her arms.
His eyes widened. A hush of awe settled over him.
“He’s so tiny…” he whispered, spellbound.
Caleb gently placed a hand on his son’s shoulder, grounding him.
“Wanna say hi, little Beta?”
Loric nodded solemnly, suddenly serious. He approached slowly, eyes locked on his brother. Kaelan was sleeping peacefully, his tiny membranous wings folded snugly against him.
“He’s… really cute.” A slightly emotional smile crept onto his face. Then, lowering his voice as if in a sacred temple:
“Hi, little brother. I’m Loric. I’ll show you everything. And I’ll protect you—like a real warrior.”
Lya’s eyes welled with tears. Caleb let out a quiet breath, somewhere between pride and tenderness.
Behind them, Arkin appeared in the doorway, arms crossed, dish towel slung over his shoulder.
“I suppose we’ll have to double the cookie rations in this house,” he grumbled, mock-irritated.
“Especially the honey shortbread,” Loric said immediately, still gazing at his brother.
“Noted,” Arkin muttered, already turning to pamper the household.
Elora, ever discreet but always present, watched the scene from the top of the stairs. Her gaze met Caleb’s, and she offered him a serene nod. She knew her role wasn’t over—but in that moment, the royal pack was whole.
Four hearts. One home. And a future waiting to be written.
Family Manor – Breakfast
Sunlight poured through the tall glass windows, casting golden patches across the pale stone floor of the dining room. A warm scent of fresh bread, sweet herbal tea, and honey floated in the air, mingling with the soft clinking of tableware.
Sitting in the large chair by the window, Lya held Kaelan against her, nestled to her chest. He suckled with peaceful focus, eyelids half-closed, his translucent wings gently fluttering in the morning light. A light blanket covered his tiny legs, and the dragoness whispered soft, meaningless words—a lullaby of pure tenderness.
