Chapter 234: The Birth of the Hybrid
Chapter 234: The Birth of the Hybrid
The room glowed with a warm light, softened by the runes carved into the walls. The silence wasn’t peaceful. It pulsed—taut, fragile—suspended on every one of Lya’s breaths.
She sat on the reinforced medical bed, hands gripping the sheets, her forehead beaded with sweat, eyes locked onto Caleb.
Soraya, calm and focused, was positioned between her legs. Bastien adjusted the monitors with surgical precision, while Myrria placed a final support rune in mid-air, as if even the magic itself was holding its breath.
“Push again, Lya. You’re almost there,” Soraya murmured.
Lya growled. Her fangs flashed briefly, then clenched down on a scream. A wave of heat rolled through the room—a draconic burst absorbed by the enchanted walls.
Caleb was right there. One hand at the back of her neck, the other on her shoulder. Present. Steady. But his eyes betrayed the storm inside.
“I’m here, my moon. With you. All the way.”
She barely nodded. A single tear slid down her cheek, incandescent.
Then Soraya suddenly lifted her head.
“One last push, Lya. Just one.”
The dragoness’s roar filled the room—raw, primal, vibrating with instinct and power. And within that cry came a new sound. A breath. A rush of air.
Then a real cry, this time. Tiny… but determined.
Soraya straightened, holding in her arms a small being still covered in a thin, wet veil. A newborn.
A baby boy, with hair as dark as Caleb’s, skin as pale as Lya’s, and… translucent, membranous wings folded over his back. Still slick with birth fluids, soft and delicate, they twitched faintly, as if the air was still too heavy for them.
“He’s here,” Soraya said, her voice transformed—softer. “Your son.”
Caleb stood frozen.
Then, slowly, he stepped forward.
His hands trembled slightly as he accepted the baby against his chest. He looked down, fascinated. The wings unfurled by a centimeter, trembled, then folded again.
“Kaelan,” he whispered.
Lya smiled weakly, her face exhausted but radiant.
“Our… ardent heir.”
Caleb lifted his gaze, overwhelmed.
“He’s perfect.”
“He’s ours,” she whispered.
Myrria passed her hands gently over the baby, scanning for magical vitals. A tremor rippled through the air, as if an ancient force had just acknowledged his arrival.
Bastien noted the readings without a word. That respectful silence said more than any speech.
And Soraya, as she cleaned the little body, smiled lightly.
“He hissed when he was born. Did you hear? A proper little dragon… with a wolf’s heart.”
The newborn’s cry grew softer, almost curious. He opened his eyes—a deep lunar blue, already glowing.
Caleb leaned in and placed a firm kiss on his tiny forehead.
“Welcome, Kaelan. May the pack and the moon protect you.”
A few minutes later
The silence had changed. It no longer brimmed with tension or anticipation. It was soft now, cotton-like, almost sacred.
Kaelan slept against Lya’s chest, curled in her arms as if he had always been there. His skin was warm, his heartbeat light. His wings lay folded against his back, now nearly invisible, as if they too understood it was time for rest, not wonder.
Lya, lying on the bed, looked exhausted… but radiant.
Caleb sat right beside her, one hand resting on her arm, the other on Kaelan’s tiny back. He couldn’t look away. He watched the baby like he feared he might vanish if he blinked too hard.
“He’s so small…” he murmured.
“You’re the one saying that?” Lya teased faintly.
“I was expecting a roaring dragon to smash the crib with his first breath.”
“Oh, it’ll come,” she whispered, closing her eyes for a moment.
Caleb let out a soft laugh. A rare one, stripped of sarcasm. The kind of laugh he only gave to moments that truly mattered. He leaned over to kiss her forehead.
“You’re incredible.”
She opened her eyes halfway.
“You’ve said that before—when I faced a lycan advisor, when I jumped off a roof to catch Loric, and now… after giving birth to your son. You trying to make me used to it?”
He looked at her, tenderly.
“I hope you never do. Because I’m in awe every single time.”
A faint noise drew their attention: Kaelan had shifted his head, his tiny wings fluttering for a second. He let out the faintest sigh, then settled again, nestled against his mother.
Lya pulled him a little closer, her touch instinctively gentle.
“Do you think he already feels things?” she asked softly.
“He’s our son. Of course he does,” Caleb answered without hesitation. “Right now, he feels that his mother is here. And that his father is standing guard.”
Lya turned her head slightly, smiling peacefully.
“And Handres?” she whispered.
Caleb lifted his eyes to the ceiling, speaking to someone unseen.
“He’s here. Watching over us too.”
Inside Caleb’s mind, a sudden wave of warmth surged—followed by a long, utterly undignified mental squeal.
Handres was crying.
Or, at least, the lupine version: emotional growls and fuzzy mental images of tiny noses and howls of joy.
The fierce predator was practically spinning in Caleb’s head like a pup seeing his first full moon.
“It’s our little one! Our baby! Look at him! He’s perfect! We’ll bite anyone who dares look at him the wrong way!”
Caleb rolled his eyes slightly.
But deep in his mind, he smiled.
Because even for an Alpha, even for Handres, this was sacred.
A moment of pack.
Of family.
Caleb pulled his chair closer to the bed and gently took Lya’s free hand.
“I didn’t think my heart had room left. But now it beats for two.”
“For three,” Lya corrected, intertwining their fingers.
And in that room, lit by draconic runes and hushed hospital sounds, they stayed there. The three of them. A dragon Alpha. A werewolf King. And their son, the ardent heir.
Lya, nestled against Caleb, her fingers gently stroking Kaelan’s tiny back, looked up at her mate, a mischievous smile on her lips.
“Tell me… is your wolf crying?”
Caleb raised an eyebrow, mock offended.
“He’s not crying. He’s… expressing intense emotion in a sacred context.”
“Mmhmm. Sure.” She smothered a giggle. “I can feel it. He’s cooing like a dragon mama with her eggs.”
A mental whine immediately echoed in Caleb’s mind.
“I’m an ancestral warrior! Not a bird!”
Then, almost immediately:
“But look at his tiny hand—he has MY baby fangs, doesn’t he? Doesn’t he?!”
Caleb closed his eyes, resigned.
“He wants to know if you think Kaelan looks like him.”
Lya burst out laughing, shaking her head gently.
“Oh, by the Moon and flame… He’s worse than me!”
She leaned in and placed a kiss on Caleb’s forehead, then another on the baby’s cheek.
“You know what? Tell him he’s right. This little wolf-dragon is already a menace… and he gets it from his second lupine dad.”
In the hushed calm of the room, bathed in the protective glow of runes, Caleb watched his mate and their son. Lya held Kaelan with fierce tenderness, her eyes gleaming despite the fatigue.
A quiet breath swelled in the Alpha’s chest, but the moment had come. He closed his eyes and reached out mentally, his voice clear in two familiar minds.
“Drake. Malick. Come up.”
The reply came quickly.
“On our way, boss.” Malick, as curt as ever.
“If I trip on the stairs, it’s because of emotions. Or the stupid floor,” added Drake, already sarcastic… but oddly subdued.
