Chapter 23 THE FIFTH MOLTING : DRAGON BREATH

Chapter 23 THE FIFTH MOLTING : DRAGON BREATH
They wanted a miracle," Kaelen’s voice resonated through the vibrating air of the square. "I gave them a nightmare."

The world seemed to slow as the "God-Slayer" bolt whistled toward the human wall. It was a streak of blinding, sanctified white, designed to erase everything in its path. Kaelen didn't wait for it to hit the civilians. With a single, explosive snap of his obsidian wings, he launched.

He became a blur of black shadow against the sky, intercepting the projectile mid-air. His metallic talons slammed into the enchanted oak of the bolt. The force of the impact created a vacuum that pulled the oxygen from the square, but Kaelen didn't yield. He gripped the white-hot iron tip and squeezed.

CRACK.

The "God-Slayer" shattered into splinters of useless timber and twisted metal. Kaelen descended, landing softly between the people and the Church’s war machine. He tossed the broken remnants at the High Inquisitor’s feet.

"Is that the best your God can do, Malachi?" Kaelen asked. "Intercepting a toy doesn't even make me break a sweat."

"Demon!" Malachi shrieked, stumbling back into his carriage. "Reload! Archers, fire! Burn the heretic and the cattle who protect him!"

The knights hesitated, their bows shaking. "Sir, the bolt... he crushed it with his bare hands. The enchantments didn't even singe him."

"I said fire!"

As the first volley of arrows arched into the sky, a violent, tectonic shift occurred within Kaelen’s chest. His lungs felt as though they were being filled with pressurized magma.

\[Commencing Fifth Molting: Elemental Forge.\]

Kaelen doubled over, his wings wrapping around him like a cocoon. His throat glowed with a terrifying, violet-black light that bled through his skin.

"Master!" Thorne shouted, shielding his eyes. "What's happening?"

"Get the people back, Thorne!" Kaelen gasped, his voice sounding like two stones grinding together. "Now!"

The knights loosed their arrows. Hundreds of silver-tipped shafts rained down. Kaelen threw his head back and opened his mouth.

He didn't scream. He exhaled.

A torrent of black, soul-chilling fire erupted from his throat. It wasn't the orange flame of a common forge; it was a dark, liquid void that expanded like a tidal wave. The fire consumed the arrows in mid-air, turning them to ash before they could even begin their descent.

"Fall back!" the knight commander yelled. "The black flame! It’s consuming the light!"

The fire washed over the ranks of the Church’s soldiers. Malachi screamed in triumph, thinking the massacre had begun. "Yes! Burn them! Let the world see the Dragon’s true nature!"

But as the black flames licked against the silver armor of the soldiers, the screaming stopped. The iron of their breastplates didn't melt into skin; instead, the white engravings and the sun-shaped seals etched into their gear began to hiss and dissolve.

"What is this?" a soldier gasped, looking at his hands. "I... I can think. The fog is gone."

"My head doesn't hurt anymore," another whispered, dropping his sword. "The High Priest's voice... it's gone."

Kaelen stood amidst the swirling black embers, his chest heaving. The \[Elemental Forge\] had done exactly what he intended. It hadn't burned their flesh; it had targeted the "Obedience Seals" the Church used to bind their armies.

"You... you broke the seals?" Malachi stared in horror at his standing, unharmed army. "That is holy magic! Only the Pope can touch the mind-seals!"

"Your 'holy' magic is just a leash, Malachi," Kaelen said, stepping through the dissipating black fire. "And I just cut it."

The knight commander looked at Kaelen, then at the High Inquisitor. He felt the weight of his own free will for the first time in ten years. He looked at the pamphlets on the ground—the evidence of the Church’s corruption—and then back at the boy with the iron wings.

"The seals are gone," the commander whispered.

He took off his silver helmet and threw it into the mud. He drew his sword, but he didn't point it at Kaelen. He slammed the blade into the ground and dropped to one knee.

"The Dragon King has returned," the commander declared, his voice echoing with the clarity of a man reborn.

One by one, the fifty knights followed suit. The sound of metal hitting the cobblestones was like a series of thunderclaps. Clang. Clang. Clang. Five hundred soldiers, the elite of the Inquisition, were kneeling in the mud of Grey-Rock.

"The Dragon King!" the crowd of citizens took up the cry, their voices rising in a deafening roar. "The Dragon King!"

Malachi scrambled into the dirt, clutching his holy staff as if it could shield him from the shifting tide of history. "This is treason! The King will send ten thousand more! You can't fight the world!"

Kaelen walked up to the High Inquisitor, his shadow stretching over the broken man. He didn't use his wings or his fire. He just looked down with the cold, hard eyes of a scrapper who had finally finished the job.

"The world is already under my contract, Malachi," Kaelen said. "And the Church just defaulted."

Thorne stepped up beside Kaelen, his massive hammer resting on his shoulder. "What do we do with him, Master? The people want a hanging."

Kaelen looked at the terrified Inquisitor, then at the soldiers who had found their souls.

"No," Kaelen said. "Let him go back to the Cathedral. I want him to tell the High Priest exactly what the black fire felt like. I want them to know that the 'Meat Shield' is coming for the treasury next."

As Malachi fled in his carriage, chased by the jeers of the city, Kaelen looked up at the sky. The violet clouds were parting, revealing a moon that glowed with a new, draconic light.

"Is it over, Master?" Jax asked, stepping out from the crowd.

"No, Jax," Kaelen said, his wings folding back with a sharp, metallic ring. "The corporate takeover was just the foundation. Now, we start the expansion."

Thorne looked at the kneeling army. "We have the soldiers. We have the gold. We have the mountain. What’s left?"

Kaelen looked toward the capital, where the palace spires were just visible on the horizon.

"The Crown," Kaelen said.

Suddenly, a massive, crystalline vibration shook the earth. It wasn't the mountain. It was coming from the center of the city square. The ground split open, and a pillar of ancient, obsidian light shot into the heavens, visible for hundreds of miles.

\[System Milestone Reached: Sovereign of the Abyss.\]
\[New Objective: The Throne of Glass.\]

Kaelen’s eyes widened as a vision flashed through his mind—a throne made not of gold, but of the very hearts of the gods he was about to face.

"Thorne," Kaelen whispered. "Get the men ready. We aren't just a Guild anymore."

"Then what are we?"

Kaelen looked at the obsidian pillar, his reflection mirroring a king who had outgrown his kingdom.

"We are the End of the Age.
