Chapter 108 Chapter 108
Chapter 108 Chapter 108
"His existence complicates things considerably. A male Blackthorne heir, raised by the Northern Alliance, suddenly appearing with powers that rival your own?" Richard shook his head. "Many are... concerned about where his loyalties truly lie."
"His loyalties are with his family," I said firmly. "With me."
"You've known him for less than a week," Margaret pointed out gently. "That's hardly enough time to..."
"I know him," I interrupted, feeling Diamond's agreement pulse through me. "Our blood connection is deeper than time. Apollo and Diamond recognised each other the moment they met. Whatever the Northern Alliance tried to make him, Lucious is a Blackthorne. He belongs with us."
"Then perhaps he should be present for these discussions," Alpha Maxwell suggested diplomatically. "So the other Alphas can see for themselves where he stands."
I nodded, grateful for the suggestion. "Is he well enough?"
"I'm well enough."
We all turned to find Lucious standing in the doorway, dressed in clothes that fit him properly for the first time since his rescue. The transformation in his bearing was remarkable; gone was the uncertain, conditioned young man from the Northern Alliance facility. In his place stood someone who held himself with quiet confidence, Apollo's golden presence visible in the amber flecks now permanently marking his blue-grey eyes.
"Brother," I greeted him warmly, rising to embrace him. Through our bond, I felt his relief at seeing me recovered, along with a lingering concern that I quickly addressed. "I'm fine. Better than fine, actually."
His eyes dropped briefly to my stomach, then back to my face with a question I answered with a small nod. Joy flickered across his features before he schooled his expression back to neutrality for our audience.
"Luna Blackthorne-Maxwell. Alpha Heir Blackthorne," Margaret said, using a title I hadn't heard applied to my brother before. "It seems the legends were true after all. The sun and moon of the Blackthorne line, reunited at last."
"Legends have a way of becoming truth when the goddess wills it," the Priestess said serenely. "These two represent the future of our kind—not destruction, as some fear, but renewal."
Richard looked unconvinced but held his tongue. The other dignitaries exchanged glances that ranged from hopeful to sceptical.
"The council will be the true test," Alpha Maxwell said, steering us back to practical matters. "Until then, we need to present a united front. The Maxwell-Blackthorne alliance must appear unshakeable."
"It is unshakeable," Kane said firmly, speaking for the first time since the meeting began. "My brothers and I stand with our Luna, and with her brother. Anyone who threatens them threatens us."
The other Maxwell heirs nodded their agreement, their unity sending a clear message to everyone present. Whatever challenges lie ahead, we will face them together, as a family, as a pack, as the beginning of something new.
I only hoped it would be enough.
"Interesting, but what will you do now with the Shadowmoon pack lands with technically two heirs?" Margaret asked, her sharp eyes moving between my brother and me.
Lucious spoke before I could, "I think I'd much prefer to serve as Beta rather than Alpha of my family pack lands. I heard whispers throughout the pack lands that when they thought my sister was the last heir to the pack, the lands would become one with two Alpha units to cover the full territory. It makes the most sense, she's the oldest of the two of us, and I'm still not of age regardless of whether the goddess let me shift a year early."
I stared at my brother, stunned by his declaration. Through our bond, I could feel his sincerity; this wasn't some ploy or false modesty. He genuinely wanted to support rather than lead.
"Lucious, you don't have to—" I began.
"I know I don't have to," he interrupted gently, turning to face me fully. "I want to. Seraphina, I spent seventeen years being groomed for a leadership role I never asked for, being shaped into something I wasn't meant to be. The thought of commanding others, of being responsible for an entire pack..." He shook his head. "That's not who I am. Not yet, anyway. Maybe not ever."
"But you're a Blackthorne heir," Richard said, clearly confused by my brother's willingness to step aside. "The male heir, at that. Traditionally…"
"Traditionally, the Blackthorne line passed leadership to the most worthy heir, regardless of gender," the Priestess interjected smoothly. "It was only in later generations that male primogeniture became the assumption. The original Shadowmoon pack recognised strength and wisdom over birth order or gender."
"Besides," Lucious continued, a hint of dry humour entering his voice, "I think I've had quite enough of people telling me what my destiny is supposed to be. For once, I'd like to choose my own path."
Alpha Maxwell nodded slowly, respect evident in his expression. "A wise decision, young Blackthorne. Leadership thrust upon the unwilling rarely ends well. Better to serve where your heart leads you."
"And serving as Beta to your sister would still keep you in a position of importance," Fin added, his analytical mind already working through the implications. "You'd be her right hand, her advisor. The bond between you would only strengthen your combined leadership."
Kane stepped forward, his dark eyes meeting Lucious's steadily. "You'd be welcome in our Alpha unit as well. As Seraphina's brother and our pack's Beta, you'd have a place among us."
I watched as something shifted in my brother's expression, a loosening of tension I hadn't even realised he'd been carrying. For so long, he'd been told what he would become. Now, for the first time, he was being offered a choice.
"Thank you," Lucious said quietly, and I could feel through our bond just how much those simple words meant to him.
Margaret leaned back in her chair, studying us both with newfound interest. "So the Blackthorne-Maxwell alliance will truly merge the territories? Two Alpha units working in concert?"
"It makes strategic sense," Alpha Maxwell confirmed. "The combined Shadowmoon and Maxwell lands are vast. Two coordinated units can patrol and protect far more effectively than one stretched thin."
"And politically?" Richard asked, his tone sceptical. "How will other packs view this... consolidation of power?"
"They can view it however they wish," I said firmly, finally finding my voice. "We're not consolidating power for the sake of dominance. We're rebuilding what the Northern Alliance destroyed and creating something stronger in its place."
"A united front," Lucious added, coming to stand beside me. "Sun and moon, working together rather than opposing each other."
The symbolism wasn't lost on anyone in the room. After centuries of the Northern Alliance trying to pit the aspects of the goddess against each other, her heirs were choosing cooperation over conflict.
