Chapter 23 Little Officer
Anushka's P.O.V.
From where I am sitting, I can't see who's at the door, but based on Jordan's demeanor, I know it's not who we were expecting.
"Go to your room and hide under the bed. Call 911." I whisper to Dakota while handing her my phone. She hesitates, but then does what I say. We have talked about 911 many times, just in case something happened.
"What are you doing?" Jordan asks.
"I'm getting rid of you. Who do you think you are playing house with my wife and daughter?" Harrison? Is he serious? I walk over to the door and see him with the gun. His hand is shaking as he keeps it pointed at Jordan.
"What the hell are you doing here? You were paid to be my husband. We're not a family. Dakota will never know who you are." I say through clenched teeth.
"Well, things have changed. You ruined my life by sending me to prison. Do you honestly think I will let you get away with that? I want you and your brat at my house so I can do everything to you that was done to me. Do you know what they did to me in there?" He asks as his hand begins shaking even more.
"I don't care what they did. Do you remember what you did to me? You're not a big man. In fact, you look feminine, so I'm guessing they treated you like the prison whore and passed you around. Couldn't have happened to a better man." When he turns to point the gun at me, I kick it from his shaking hand. Before Harrison has time to react, Jordan tackles him into the hallway. He's much bigger than Harrison, so he has no problem restraining him with his knee in his back and his hands held behind him.
"Dakota is calling the police." We all three look up when the elevator opens. It's a man carrying several bags. He looks at the men and then me.
"Am I on the right floor?" He asks.
"Are you from Bill's Designs?" Jordan asks where he still has Harrison easily restrained on the floor. He can't get free no matter how hard he fights.
"Yes, I'm Bill. Your building isn't far from my office, so I walked rather than catching a cab," he replies.
"Please go inside and take a seat. We're waiting on the police, and then we'll be right in," I tell him. Bill nods and walks past us to enter the penthouse. A minute later, the elevator opens again, and this time, it's filled with police. I step forward.
"This is my ex-husband, Harrison Andrews. He pulled a gun on us, but we were able to knock it out of his hand and restrain him. He was recently released from prison after spending several years there for abusing me." I tell them as Jordan pulls Harrison up and hands him over to the officers.
"They're lying. I came here to see my daughter. Let me go. I'm not going back to prison." One officer pulls him toward the elevator after putting handcuffs on him while reading his Miranda rights. Another one picks up the gun and puts it in an evidence bag.
"How did you get up here? Building security isn't supposed to let anyone on this floor without my permission." Jordan asks Harrison.
"I guess you're not as powerful as you think. I walked right in the front door and came up here without anyone trying to stop me." Harrison says smugly as the elevator door closes.
"We received a call from Dakota, who said her mommy had told her to call 911, but she didn't know why." One of the remaining officers says.
"I saw Jordan's reaction when he opened the door, and I knew something was wrong. I sent her to her room to hide and call the police. Let me get her, and then I assume you want to get our statements." I say as we all step inside.
"Yes. We'll need those, and our crime scene unit will come to process everything and gather evidence. If the entire encounter took place in the hall, then they shouldn't have to bother you folks unless they have questions," he replies. I go to Dakota's room. I'm so glad she missed that whole scene.
"Sweetheart, you can come out now." She crawls out from under the bed and runs into my arms.
"Why did I have to call 911?" She asks as I pick her up and kiss her cheek.
"There was a bad man at the door. The police are here. We have to talk to them for a few minutes. The guy who's going to decorate your room is here as well. Do you want to show him your room while we talk to the police?" I figure the less she has to hear about Harrison, the better.
"Okay," Dakota says as I carry her to the living room. I walk over to Bill, who looks like he has just walked into a war zone.
"Dakota, this is Bill. Would you like to go to her room so she can tell you how she wants it to be decorated?" I typically would not let a stranger be alone with Dakota, but she and I have talked about bad touches. Also, the penthouse has several police officers in it right now. I think they would haul Bill away if he even looked at her the wrong way. He seems relieved at my suggestion.
"Yes, thank you," he replies softly. After I put Dakota down, instead of heading to her room, she walks over to where the officers are talking to Jordan.
"You guys got here super fast. You're not going to let any more bad guys get us, are you? We have had too many already." She says, looking up at them. I swear I can see them all falling in love with my little charmer already.
"We will do everything possible to keep you safe and the bad guys away. Would you like this special badge? It will let everyone know you have police protection." One of the officers holds out a little pin that looks like a police badge, and Jordan helps her pin it to her top. I can't help smiling as Dakota stands a little taller. She shakes each officer's hand and then walks over to Bill. He's staring at Dakota with wide eyes as she reaches out to take his hand.
"Come on, Bill, I'll show you my room. I'm with the police now, so I'll keep you safe." He smiles and takes her hand.
"Thank goodness. Your parents are lucky to have an officer like you living here," Bill replies as she leads him down the hall.
"I think I'm ready to tell my wife it's time to have a baby now." The officer who gave Dakota the pin says as we all laugh.
"Do you carry those pins around with you?" I ask him, taking a seat next to Jordan.
"Yeah. We hand them out to the kids as a reminder to call us if they're ever in trouble." He explains. We give our statements, and I tell them about mine and Harrison's history. When they leave the crime scene, people are in the hallway. They assured us they shouldn't need us for anything. After we close the door, Jordan pulls me into his arms.
"When I saw him with that gun, all I could think about was you and Dakota. I'm glad you had her call the police. If you hadn't, I may have ended up in jail because I was going to kill him. When you kicked the gun out of his hand, I was ready to get it myself and shoot him in the head. I hope they keep him locked up this time." He leans down to kiss me. My heart had been racing the entire time and was finally returning to normal, thanks to Jordan.
"I'm glad you didn't kill him. I'm not into conjugal visits." Jordan laughs as we walk toward Dakota's room.
"Well, that's one less idiot we need to worry about." He kisses me again, and we start laughing when we walk into her room. Bill is sitting on the floor with a sketchpad open while Dakota walks back and forth in front of him, describing everything she wants. I'm pretty sure her room is going to be one of a kind, just like she is.
