Chapter 13 The Driver
Jordan's P.O.V.
Anushka and I look at each other while Dakota waits for an answer about why we were exercising so late last night. I'm a successful businessman; surely I can come up with some reason that isn't exactly a lie but not the whole truth that will satisfy a four-year-old.
"I wanted to make sure my heart was good and strong just in case any of the poison had gotten into my bloodstream." Anushka bites her lip, trying not to laugh. Dakota crosses her arms and narrows her eyes. Why do I feel like she's getting ready to chastise me? She looks so much like her mother right now.
"Okay. Are we going to eat breakfast before we talk to the police?" Dakota asks. Both Anushka and I sigh in relief. We'll have to be more careful next time.
"Let's order room service. What do you want?" I ask, sliding my arm around Anushka's waist. I expect her to push me off, not wanting me to touch her in front of Dakota, but she doesn't. The little spy notices my arm, and her eyes widen.
"You're hugging Mommy. What does that mean?" She asks, looking from me to her mom and back again. I'm not sure what to say, so I'll let Anushka take this one. She picks Dakota up and kisses her cheek.
"If we're going to be a family, Jordan and I will be like other mommies and daddies. We'll hug and kiss each other," she explains. Dakota's face lights up, and she pulls my shirt so she can hug us both.
"I knew Jordan would be my for real Daddy," she says. I look at Anushka over Dakota's head and smile. Can a heart burst from too much love? I love these two more than I have ever loved anyone, and I've only known them for a day. How is that possible? I guess the whole soulmates thing is real because it certainly feels like Anushka is the part of me that's been missing.
"What do you want for breakfast?" I ask them. Not only do we need to go to the police station, but I also want to get my contacts working on this.
"I want pancakes with sprinkles. Do you think they have those here?" Dakota asks excitedly.
"I'm sure they have whatever you want. What about you, Mommy?" I ask Anushka. I really love seeing her wear my clothes. I can't wait to see her out of them again.
"I think I'll have a ham and cheese omelet today. Do you want to order the food while she and I get dressed?" Anushka smiles, and my heart swells even more. I can't believe she's mine. How could that idiot Harrison ever hurt her? He may have gone to prison for what he did, but that's not good enough. He will pay for every time he has ever laid a hand on her.
"Sounds good." I kiss each of their foreheads, and Dakota's smile gets even bigger. Anushka takes her to the other room as I pull out my phone. I call room service and order our breakfast, getting extra sprinkles on Dakota's pancakes. After I disconnect the call, I return to the bedroom and take a super-fast shower. It's not as much fun without Anushka. After dressing, I pull my phone out again to make another call.
"Hello?" the voice on the other line answers.
"Hey, Raymond, it's Jordan. I hope I'm not disturbing you." I honestly don't care if I'm disturbing him or not. I need him to do something, and I don't want to sound like a jerk.
"I'm not doing anything important. What can I do for you?" He asks anxiously. I pay him well to be at my beck and call.
"I'm on vacation in Curacao. I've only been here for two days, and yesterday someone poisoned me; my room and the room of the woman I'm seeing were broken into, and her daughter was kidnapped. I find it hard to believe that all of these things happened in less than twenty-four hours, and it's just a coincidence. Can you look into it for me? See if any cameras around the hotel may show you something. Anything you can find will be more than we have now. We're meeting with the police soon to go over sketches to see if Dakota can identify the man who took her." Someone knocks just as Anushka and Dakota come out of the other room.
"I'll take care of it. What's the woman's name?" Raymond asks as I walk to the door and look out the peephole. There's a woman with our food. I open the door, and she pushes it inside.
"Anushka Wilkins," I reply as I tip the woman, and she leaves.
"Okay, I'm on it. I'll let you know as soon as I have anything to share." Raymond disconnected the call, and I put my phone away.
"Who was that?" Anushka asks as she puts the food on the table.
"Raymond. He's one of the contacts I mentioned to you. If there's anything to find, he'll find it. We're going to get to the bottom of everything that happened yesterday. I promise you I will not rest until we know what's going on." Anushka smiles as she wraps her arms around me. Dakota is already digging into her pancakes loaded with sprinkles, but I see her watching us while she eats.
"Thank you. Not only for calling this guy to help, but for being here and being you. I didn't think I would jump into something so quickly, but my heart has a mind of its own." She kisses my cheek, and I hug her tighter. I think we both let our hearts lead us, and it's definitely not a bad thing.
After we finish eating, I call a car to take us to the police station. I'm not taking any chances with people on the street anymore. We need to take extra precautions for all of us.
When the car arrived, there was no picture of the driver on the app, but I verified the license plate, and the make and model of the car matched the information on the app. The three of us sit in the backseat, with Dakota in the middle. I looked up the police station before we left, so I knew it was not far away. When I look out the window, I realize we're going in the wrong direction.
"Excuse me, the police station isn't this way," I tell the driver. He ignores me and begins driving faster. I look at the doors and realize the locks have been removed, so we can't escape.
"What are you doing? We need to go to the police station." I tell him more firmly. When he turns to look at me, he smiles. He then looks at Dakota.
"I need to pay the little brat back for biting me. I was hired by someone who wants to see you all die, and I'm about to make that happen. So get comfortable. We'll be there in about an hour. Oh, and if you try anything, I'll use this." He pulls out a gun and waves it at us. I look at Anushka and Dakota, who are both looking at me. What are we going to do? I promised to keep them safe.
