Chapter 79 Fate of the Moonborn

Chapter 79 Fate of the Moonborn
Kael’s POV

“You let her leave.”

My voice is low, yet it carries through the room.

Chilling.

Rowan stands there, right next to the open balcony. The hallway is dimly lit, celebration stretching far into the night.

The moonlight illuminates Alpha Rowan, and his eyes remain just as piercing as ever.

“Yes.”

A growl rips out of my chest, and the edges of my vision go red.

One step, then another, until I am barely inches away from him, my eyes gleaming with malice and fury.

“You dare to act when it is not your place.” I seethe, simmering on the inside.

“You forget she is my mate, Alpha Kael,” he replies, cool as a cucumber.

Were it not for Kaia who had followed the trio out of the pack and acted to try and stop them, would I have any idea about what took place today?

I snort openly, closing my hands into fists with an audible crack.

“Perhaps I should terminate our truce with the Nightfang Pack, Rowan. You have committed one too many transgressions.”

“Are you willing to risk it? Recall the Hounds tested the security of your pack, not mine. They seem to target you,” His voice takes on a taunting tone.

I slam my fist against the wall right next to him. He doesn't flinch yet I see his gaze darkening with surprising speed.
The air crackles with intense energy.

“Watch your actions, Alpha Rowan,” I grunt. “If anything happens to her…”

“Something has already happened, right in your pack. Do you think you can keep her safe? Were it not for her powers, would she have been able to escape?” Rowan retorts, chest heaving.
His resentment is evident, a reminder of how much I have taken  from him.

Yet, a darkly amused chuckle leaves my lips.
“You wanted to get back at me for taking her from you. Her safety does not matter as much to you as you claim.”

Rowan loses his cool now, and he gives me a hard shove. I stumble back two steps, my claws sparpening, muscles shifting.

But before I can make that final move, a voice rings out, calm and unhurried from the entrance of the large room.

“Alpha Kael, now is not the time for fights. Do control yourself.”

It is Elder Mireya. I tilt my head, and Rowan glances back at her the same time I do.

She emerges from the dimly lit hallway, and bows to both of us. Her expression remains placid.

“What do you have to say about this? Perhaps you can throw more insight, Elder Mireya,” Rowan steps forward, a veil of forced politeness covering the anger he had just shown previously.

“Hmm,” The grey-haired Elder hums, a small smile playing on her lips. “Fear not, both of you. Luna is well protected. And even if she weren't, she is quite resilient. Her destiny cannot be derailed. Her place is neither here, in the Ironfang Pack, nor  was she ever meant to stay.”

Her words elicit silence from both Rowan and I.

I reel from the information.
“You knew she would leave,” I eventually say, the words leaving my mouth in low hisses. My ire has found a new target, though she remains unbothered by it. “What are your intentions, Elder Mireya? To have her go through harm. She is unsafe with the Hounds searching for her.”

“I’m glad you have figured that part out, Alpha Kael. But do you believe you have the power to protect her alone? Do you think your place is to dictate the twists of fate? Or have you lost your drive to carry out your duties as Alpha as well?”

Her words hit me like a slap to the face.
I blink, brows furrowing slightly.

“As long as she is safe,” Rowan steps up beside me. “That is all we need.”

“Then that matter is settled. She has a long task ahead of her. But so do you both, and the rest of us,” She raises her hand, the pendulum in her right hand swinging from side to side. Though her hands remain still, the frequency of the pendulum swing intensifies, as though pushed by an invisible hand.

“The fate of the Moonborn is to either unite or destroy, and the actions of those around her may lead her and the world either into ruin or utopia,” Elder Mireya speaks, her voice carving a void into my gut. “Too many battles are on the horizon. Only by uniting in strength and following the will of the Goddess can we all survive. This long war is coming. Alpha Rowan, Alpha Kael, your actions determine the fate of many in this fight. Do not let go of your duties as Alphas to chase after shadows. Be decisive, and for once, trust in the abilities of each other.”

An alliance, I surmise, is what she means.
It grates on my nerves that she would relate me to this fool of an Alpha. But, my mind studies her words, piercing through the contents to discern her intent.
As the Ironfang and Nightfang Packs are arguably the strongest packs in the region, it is obvious the wealth of our influence would affect the future.

I glance at the Alpha of the Nightfang pack to gauge his reaction to the Elder’s words. Knowing his usual aloofness and disbelief of seers and the mysteries in our world, I doubt he will agree to such notions.
However, the next moment, my assumptions are challenged.

“If an alliance is what would help the people of this region, then I am willing.”
Alpha Rowan straightens as he says this, casting a look in my direction, full of challenge.

I grit my teeth and nod in response, curt and without flourish.

Elder Mireya smiles at both of us, akin to a mother observing her children.

“Excellent.” she beams positively. “ Everything is coming together. I can only hope that you will not forget the bigger picture.”

Past the veneer of celebration, as the full moon beams down on us, there is a storm brewing in the air. Rain begins to drizzle, once more, continuing throughout the night.
