Chapter 71
**Solidifying Trust**
*Luna’s POV*
Patches of gold dotted the woodland floor as the dim light of dawn crept through the dense tree canopy. Every movement I made was a reminder of how close we had come to losing everything, and my muscles hurt from the fight. Even though I was exhausted, I kept thinking about last night—the pandemonium of the battle, the dark force Magnus had wielded, and the unadulterated resolve in Kai's eyes.
Above all, however, I couldn't forget how Kai ultimately protected me, encircling me with his arms like an impenetrable wall as Magnus and his men withdrew.
I watched the others reassemble as I stood close to the pack's training area. Tension and unanswered questions pervaded the air. Were we prepared to handle what was ahead?
As usual, Kai's magnetic presence drew near from the treeline. The weight of the earth appeared to lighten for a minute as his golden eyes met mine.
"Luna," he said in a steady, quiet voice.
I stood up straight and met him in the middle. "You shouldn't put too much pressure on yourself right now. You should get some rest.
A half-smile twitched his lips. "I could tell you the same thing."
Refusing to let him divert, I folded my arms. "Last night, you defeated half of Magnus's men. You are the one who needs a break the most.
Kai's face softened as he took a step closer. "Until I'm certain the pack is safe, I can't sleep." and until I'm certain you're secure.
I felt my spine tingle from the strength of his speech. I was momentarily at a loss for words to reply.
"We both need to recover if we're going to face what's coming," I concluded. This pack cannot afford for me or its Alpha to fail.
Kai looked thoughtfully as he nodded. Then, let's concentrate on our controllable aspects. After breakfast, meet me at the training ring.
\---
When I got to the training ring, the normal throng of warriors was noticeably missing, and it was silent. With his muscles shining in the early light and his shirt thrown aside, Kai stood in the middle.
"Where is everybody?" As I entered the circle, I inquired.
With a nonchalant tone, Kai said, "I told them to take the morning off." "We are the only ones in this session."
I arched an eyebrow. "Us?"
He grinned. "In warfare, we need to practice trusting one another. We cannot afford to be hesitant or second-guess ourselves if Magnus returns.
The thought of battling with Kai was more than a bit terrifying, but I couldn't dispute with his reasoning. Nevertheless, I took my place, maintaining a solid posture in spite of the butterflies in my breast.
I replied in a forceful voice, "Ready when you are."
Kai made no hesitation. His punches were calculated but unrelenting, and he moved with the agility and accuracy of a predator. My instincts kicked in as the fight's rhythm took control, and I did my best to evade and react.
With a playful tone, he said, "You're holding back." "Don't be scared to strike me."
In an effort to disprove him, I squinted. I swung left with a sudden surge of force and then swept his knees out from under him.
Kai grunted when he struck the floor, but I could tell by the smile on his face that he wasn't angry.
As he stood up, he said, "Now we're getting somewhere."
As our sparring progressed, the tension between us changed completely. Every gesture and blow seemed to convey an implicit message—a quiet dialogue between two individuals developing trust.
\---
A few hours later, we were both panting heavily as we sat on the side of the training ring. Long shadows stretched over the ground as the sun rose higher in the sky.
"You're getting better," Kai said in a sincere manner.
I gave him a startled look. "I'll take that as a compliment coming from you."
His laughter was rich and low. "Yes, it is. Luna, you underestimate your strength.
His remarks evoked a deep-seated sense of pride and doubt in me. I acknowledged that I still had a lot to learn.
"We all do," Kai said, his face suddenly grave. However, you possess something that most others do not: heart. You are concerned about this pack and its members. That's what sets you apart.
His remarks struck closer to home than I cared to acknowledge, so I turned away. I sometimes question if I'm doing enough. whether I'm worthy of being here.
Kai's fingertips touched mine as he extended his hand. It was a gentle, almost tentative touch, yet it made me feel warm.
With firmness, he responded, "You belong here." "Don't question that."
Heavy with unsaid feelings, the moment dragged between us. The sound of footsteps cut us off before I could say anything to convey the tumultuous emotions roiling inside of me.
With a strained look, Lyra emerged at the edge of the ring.
"Alpha, Luna," she exclaimed in a frantic tone. "We're having trouble."
\---
A number of warriors had assembled in the main hall, and we followed Lyra there. A messenger stood in the middle of the room, his garments ripped and his face white.
"What took place?" Kai's voice was stern as he ordered.
The messenger took a deep breath before continuing. Our scouts were ambushed close to the northern border. Despite their successful escape, they said Magnus's soldiers were reassembling.
As Kai's face became serious, I experienced a wave of rage. I said, "He's not wasting any time."
The messenger gave a nod. "There's more. Something they heard was a name. Cerberus.
With the weight of the name bearing down on everyone, the room became quiet.
"What is Cerberus, and who is it?" I looked from Kai to the others as I inquired.
Kai's mouth clenched. Magnus is enforced by Cerberus. A violent guy who thrives on violence. Magnus is preparing for a full-scale conflict if he is enlisting him in this.
Despite the shudder that went down my spine, I resisted giving in to terror. Then we must be prepared. Whatever is necessary.
Kai looked at me and nodded. "We'll be. Together.
I was reassured by the confidence in his voice, and I had optimism for the first time since this journey started.
However, I couldn't get rid of the sensation that something was about to go horribly wrong as the warriors started making plans and the gravity of the situation set in.
\---
The day's events repeated in my head as I lay in bed that night. I was about to fall asleep when I was startled awake by a loud sound.
I sat up and listened carefully, my heart pounding. There were footsteps in the corridor, then a hushed scream.
I threw on a cloak, sprang from the bed, and ran toward the sound. Lyra was pale and her eyes were big with dread as I slammed into her as I rounded the corner.
"Luna," she exhaled sharply. It's Kai. He is no longer there.
For an instant, I was unable to breathe as the words struck me like a blow.
"Gone, what do you mean?" I insisted.
Lyra whispered, trembling, "He went out." "He traveled alone to the northern border."
When I learned the reality,
I felt a wave of panic. Kai had left me and the pack behind to confront Magnus and Cerberus.
And he may not return.
