Chapter 173

Chapter 173

The car in the accident was the very one Ava had sold two days ago.

She felt relieved that she'd sold the car, or it would have been her and her unborn baby in that accident today. But she also hated herself for selling it and bringing misfortune to someone else's family.

A traffic accident identical to Nancy's all those years ago.

Even the police gave the same explanation—just a simple case of "brake failure."

Ava didn't believe it could be such a coincidence.

She calmed down and reviewed everything that had happened recently, thinking back to that time in the hospital parking lot when she ran into Nola and Steven, and the viciousness that flashed in that awful pair's eyes.

It was hard to say they weren't involved. At least in Ava's mind, they were the prime suspects.

Once again, she couldn't hold it together and broke down.

What kind of husband, son, and father was Steven exactly?

He most likely conspired with his mistress, Nola, to kill his first wife, then abandoned his own mother and biological daughter. Now, to satisfy Sarah's wishes, he wanted to kill his own biological daughter.

How cruel did someone have to be to do things so ruthlessly?

Ava sat numbly on the floor. Going out was impossible now. She was even afraid that the evil pair might send a hitman to her door to finish her off.

She stayed there in a daze for a long time before coming to her senses. In a society ruled by law, they couldn't be allowed to act so brazenly. Even if she couldn't find evidence right now to prove Nola and Steven were murderers, there had to be a way to bring them to justice.

She pulled out her phone and dialed 911.

"Officer, I'm the original owner of the car with brake failure in yesterday's thirteen-car pileup on the highway. I suspect someone tampered with that car. Please investigate and give the victims the truth they deserve."

Meanwhile, Sarah had been taken by William's people to Lakeview Estates, where she was being looked after by dedicated staff. She was completely cut off from seeing Steven and Nola in person and could only talk to them by phone.

She'd seen the news on TV, watched as the person in that car was carried out covered with a white sheet, and was absolutely thrilled. She no longer had to worry about that bitch using some trick to call William away, or rack her brains thinking about how to make them divorce quickly.

William finally belonged to her alone, and only she was worthy of the position of Mrs. Morgan.

In the dozen or so hours since the accident, she'd been so excited she couldn't sleep all night, and even ate an extra bowl of rice this morning.

When Nola's call came in, she answered instantly with excitement.

"Mom, does this mean I never have to see that bitch again?"

The response on the phone was a long silence. After the silence, Nola spoke with difficulty.

"Sarah, the person in the car wasn't Ava. She sold the car the day before."

"What?"

Sarah felt like she'd been struck by a blow. She stepped back and deflated in an instant. She'd been excited all night, only to find out the person carried away wasn't Ava.

Her hopes dashed.

Why wasn't it that bitch?

She hid in the bathroom and said in a hushed voice,

"Mom, I want her dead. You must have a way, right?"

Nola tried to comfort her.

"Sarah, don't panic. That bitch is very cunning. We've already tipped our hand and put her on alert. We can't make another move right now."

Sarah covered her mouth and started crying.

"But I can't wait anymore. In three days, the specialist William found will be here. If he finds out my illness is cured, he won't have any pity or guilt left for me. How will I marry him then?"

Sarah felt she'd reached the end of her rope. Her nerves were stretched tight. She didn't have much time left. She couldn't just sit and wait for death.

She was suffering so much—she couldn't let that bitch Ava be comfortable.

In the kitchen, the maid William had sent was making desserts.

Sarah finally came out, a fake smile spreading across her face.

"Hello, what are you making?"

The maid put down what she was doing and turned around with a smile.

"Baking some cookies. I saw you ate pretty well this morning. Mr. Morgan instructed me that since you're pregnant, you need to eat more to ensure proper nutrition. I'll try to make more variety. Just tell me whatever you'd like to eat."

Sarah smiled slightly and asked, "I'd like to eat turbot. Can you make that for me?"

The maid smiled.

"Miss Brown, no need to be so polite. Just tell me what you want to eat. Fish is good for the baby. I'll call Benjamin now and have him buy some and bring it over."

After speaking, the maid put down what she was doing, wiped her hands, and went to the living room to get her phone.

Sarah quickly stopped her.

"Benjamin works for the Morgan Mansion. Howard doesn't like me, so he definitely wouldn't want his people running errands for me. Why don't you go buy it instead?"

The maid was also someone William had brought from the Morgan Mansion. She'd worked for the Morgan family for decades and practically watched William grow up. He trusted her, which is why he called her to look after his child. Now, seeing Sarah pregnant and acting so cautious, she couldn't help but feel sorry for her.

Her heart softened, and she agreed.

"Alright, I'll go buy it. You wait at home and don't go anywhere."

There was a large supermarket right across from the complex, just a ten-minute walk. The maid took off her apron and changed her shoes. Before leaving, she reminded Sarah again,

"Mr. Morgan said that since you're carrying a child, you need to be extremely careful about everything. If you want to go out, wait for me to come back, and I'll go with you. Don't go out alone—better safe than sorry."

When William brought the maid over, he specifically told her not to let Sarah go out alone, showing how precious this child was to him. The maid took her duties seriously, afraid of any oversight in her care.

Sarah smiled and agreed.

"Don't worry, I won't go anywhere."

As soon as the maid left, Sarah changed into outdoor clothes and called Nola.

"Mom, I'm going to make that bitch's life a living hell."

......

Ava spent the day at home feeling uneasy. She didn't dare go out now, uncertain what might be waiting for her if she did. The police still hadn't gotten back to her.

As evening approached, a phone ring broke the silence in the house.

Ava saw it was Jack calling and quickly answered.

"Ava, something's happened."

Hearing those words, Ava felt her whole body tense up.

"What happened?"

"Ava, stay calm first, don't panic."

Jack knew how serious it was and wanted to prepare her first, worried she might not be able to handle such a big blow all at once. This kind of thing would be hard for anyone to accept.

Even he, as an outsider, found Sarah and Nola's evil actions unbearable.

"I'm ready. Tell me."
