Chapter 156
From Sarah's angle, she could see the doorway perfectly. William stood there, his eyes cold and distant. She glanced sideways at Steven, feeling extremely awkward.
"Dad, stop talking..."
Steven was still immersed in the joy of Sarah carrying the Morgan family's eldest son, completely oblivious to William's arrival.
"Why shouldn't I talk about it? Whose family fortune doesn't go to their son? I just don't have a son. If I had a son, I would also..."
At this point, everyone in the room's expressions changed.
Steven realized he'd said the wrong thing and let his true thoughts slip out.
"Sarah, just focus on being Mrs. Morgan. Don't forget to help your dad out with business in the future, and put in a good word with William. Dad doesn't have any connections, and starting a business is so hard. The company got to where it is today by drinking glass after glass with clients - my stomach's about to develop an ulcer."
Sarah's face darkened. She'd always thought Steven loved her most, always gave her whatever she wanted. How could she have imagined he was only so affectionate because the family had no boys? If there were a boy, she probably wouldn't matter in this family at all.
She could forget about getting any share of his company.
Sarah glanced at William at the door, terrified Steven would say something else inappropriate. She quickly spoke up,
"William, you got here so fast."
It had only been ten minutes or so since she'd called, and there he was standing in the doorway.
At this moment, the joy in her heart couldn't be suppressed. It seemed Steven was right - even if men don't say it out loud, they all want a son deep down.
He must have found out she was carrying a boy, so he dropped everything and rushed over, right?
This attention made her feel that all her awful morning sickness hadn't been for nothing - it was worth it!
Steven saw William come in, his old face showing some embarrassment.
Just then, Sarah felt nauseous again. Too late to run to the bathroom, Nola quickly pushed the trash can over to her. She threw up all the snacks she'd just eaten.
Steven laughed beside her,
"Ha, boys are more trouble. That's good though - means he'll be a lively kid!"
William's gaze swept over Sarah's vomit in the trash can, displeasure flickering in his eyes.
He'd already gotten angry when he heard them scheming at the door about dividing up his company. Now he was just holding back from exploding because he was afraid Sarah would make a scene.
Naturally, he wasn't going to be pleasant.
"If your stomach hurts, eat lighter foods. Don't touch fried or processed snacks at all. If you don't watch what you eat, I'll have to find you a stomach specialist tomorrow."
He'd already found a heart specialist - he didn't want to hear about any other problems. He just wanted her to be well. If she were healthy, then he could have some peace.
Sarah hadn't recovered from the nausea yet. Before she could speak, another wave of vomiting hit.
This time, she emptied her stomach completely.
She'd eaten chips, cola, and other snacks... Because staying in this hospital room was boring, and William wouldn't keep her company, and she didn't really have any illness but was confined to this small room - even restricted to this single bed to make the act convincing - she was going crazy with boredom. She'd begged Nola for ages before she brought these snacks.
Nola had already disposed of all the snack wrappers, but who knew they'd slip up here.
Steven gave an ingratiating laugh,
"Mr. Morgan, Sarah can't eat a proper meal right now; she only wants these snacks. Women, you know, when they're pregnant, they get cravings - it's understandable. Or maybe it's the little one in her belly who wants to eat? Eating something is better than eating nothing at all."
William had mainly come to tell her to keep her diet light for the next week - this was what the Lumaria specialist had instructed. They were worried that when the specialist came to examine her in a week, it would affect the accuracy of the test results, so she had to follow the rules.
Now it seemed this trip wasn't wasted. Telling her over the phone clearly wouldn't work - he'd caught her red-handed.
William announced seriously,
"From now on, no more of this unhealthy food. All meals must be light. I'll have someone prepare and deliver three meals a day."
Steven heard this and thought the boy had finally come around. Hearing Sarah's news that she was carrying a son, he was finally willing to care about Sarah, even sending meals three times a day. Was he worried that he, the grandfather-to-be, wouldn't feed Sarah well? Right now, he treasured that little one in Sarah's belly more than anyone.
"Mr. Morgan, that's very thoughtful of you. I told you Sarah is a lucky girl."
After finishing vomiting, Sarah wiped her face and finally had a chance to speak,
"William, I was just feeling so awful, hungry, but couldn't eat anything. Don't worry, I won't eat randomly anymore. Look, I threw it all up anyway. One or two meals won't affect the baby. I'm his mother - of course, I want him born healthy. I absolutely won't touch these snacks again."
William made a sound of acknowledgment. "Good that you remember. I'll send a servant to stay with you. Don't have too many people around, it would make the air in the room bad."
He was thoroughly disgusted with Steven. If it weren't for Steven's instigation, Sarah wouldn't be so stubborn about pressuring him.
At this moment, William didn't even want Sarah to have much contact with her parents. Those two old troublemakers couldn't teach her anything good; they only came up with vicious schemes. Now they already had their eyes on his company. What would happen after the child was born?
Steven caught the meaning in William's words and gave another ingratiating laugh,
"Yes, yes, that's good. Having Mr. Morgan's people specially attend to you puts my mind at ease. Just focus on the pregnancy. When your health improves, you can leave the hospital and go home. Mr. Morgan will arrange it, right?"
Steven tentatively turned his gaze to William.
William's face was dark at this moment, his powerful presence making Steven speak tremulously.
"You don't need to come anymore. Everything will wait until the specialist examines Sarah's health. I'll arrange everything on her end."
The words were airtight but left the three of them stunned. So his careful arrangements were meant to ensure Sarah would cooperate with the examination?
All three knew in their hearts - this examination couldn't be done!
The hospital room fell into dead silence. Sarah's brain seemed to crash multiple times in that short period. She couldn't think of a good excuse to put it off.
Did she really have to obediently submit?
She pinned her hopes on Steven, looking at him expectantly. She thought her worldly-wise father would surely have some good solution.
But Steven just sat there with a stern face, saying nothing.
Sarah wheedled,
"William, I'm scared. How about we wait until after the baby is born? Won't it affect the baby's development?"
Nola chimed in, "Right, right. How can a pregnant woman just take medicine randomly? Let alone have surgery. This illness can wait, wait until the child is safely born, then it won't be too late for surgery."
The family of three unified their story, insisting on waiting until after the baby was born to do the examination.
William wasn't having it. He'd already arranged everything.
Even if surgery couldn't be done, he wanted the specialist to examine her thoroughly and see just how bad her health really was, having episodes every few days.
William: "I've already arranged it. In a week, the specialist will come examine you. It's a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. As for whether medication is appropriate, the doctor will consider it carefully. He knows better than we do."
The family of three deflated.
