Chapter 151
William wasn't seeing this kind of scene for the first time. Since Sarah returned to the country, she'd had more episodes than he could count. What made this time different from before was that she now had a child in her belly.
That child was his.
Without a doubt, Sarah had one more card to use against him.
The mess he'd made left him no way to just walk away, and time couldn't go back to that night. If he'd known things would turn out like this, he wouldn't have sat down to drink and catch up with her for anything in the world.
William fell silent for a moment. He didn't want to look at those two old folks in the room, especially Steven. He said to Sarah,
"If you keep getting sick after coming back home, you probably haven't found the right doctor. I've contacted a specialist at Lumaria, an authority on heart disease. He's available next Wednesday. Should we fly over there, or should I bring him here?"
William threw out a choice. When Sarah heard that William wanted to find her a doctor, she panicked instantly.
If the specialist he contacted came over, wouldn't her long-cured heart condition be exposed? She could bribe doctors domestically in advance, but how could a doctor whom William contacted help her keep up the lie?
When that happened, forget about herself—the child in her belly would probably be forcibly dealt with by him, too, and she'd lose any chance with the Morgan family for life.
Becoming Mrs. Morgan had been her dream since childhood. She'd worked so hard for so many years—she couldn't let it all fall apart now.
Thinking of this, Sarah collected her emotions and tried to calm herself down.
"William, that's too much trouble. I just got sick because I was upset. I've been keeping in touch with my doctor at Lumaria by email. He says I'm fine, I just need to stay in a good mood."
Steven chimed in too,
"Mr. Morgan, it's just pregnancy affecting Sarah. Women have big mood swings during special times. If you sweet-talk her more and she can see you every day, naturally, she'll be in good spirits. Why would she get sick then? We don't need to spend that kind of money."
What William was thinking right now was that even if he had to put up everything he owned, he wanted to cure Sarah. That way, wouldn't he be free? He'd never have to be controlled by her again.
He'd thought this through on the cruise ship and had already contacted the foreign specialist, Dr. Kingsley. He'd received confirmation and had even paid half the deposit—fifty million to buy a week of Dr. Kingsley's time.
This time, he had to cure her illness so she'd never have another episode.
William said with a straight face,
"I've already made the arrangements. If you don't want to travel, I'll bring the doctor to the country to see you. Since you're sick, cooperate with the treatment—unless you don't want to get better."
Sarah's expression stiffened. Did he mean she couldn't avoid it this time? She instinctively looked at Steven standing nearby, wondering if her dad, with all his experience, had any way to talk William out of bringing in a foreign specialist.
Steven's lips twitched a few times. He was about to say something when he met William's sharp gaze. That sense of pressure made him shut his mouth instantly.
"Rest and take care of yourself. If anything comes up, see a doctor. I have things to deal with on my end. I'll let you know when the specialist arrives."
With that, he pushed the door open and left.
The moment he walked out, Sarah bounced up from the hospital bed.
"Dad, what am I going to do? When the specialist comes, I'll be exposed."
Steven paced back and forth in the room.
"Don't be scared. Just focus on the pregnancy. If the sky falls, I'll hold it up for you. I don't believe he won't care about his own son. Let's get your blood drawn first and send it to Imperial City. Boy or girl—doesn't matter—have them issue a report stating it's a boy. Then you'll be calling all the shots. You need to make good use of these ten months. Miss this chance, and it'll be hard to have leverage over the Morgan boy again."
Sarah said with a bitter face,
"Dad, don't you think I can't control him even now? He won't even stay in the room with me, and he doesn't come when I call. Is this how a father-to-be should act?"
Steven consoled her,
"Sarah, keep your cool. I guarantee you, we'll talk about everything after the test results come out. Best if it's a boy—saves us a step."
On the other side, a group of doctors arrived in the quiet hospital room.
Ava had been sitting by her grandfather's bed, talking to herself, never imagining that Howard would suddenly wake up and pat her hand.
She quickly pressed the nurse call button. Within a minute, the nurse brought several of the hospital's top doctors to examine the awakened Howard.
When William returned, the doctors had finished their examination.
He heard the commotion in the room from the hallway and got scared, thinking something had happened. He rushed in, taking two steps at a time, and ran right into the smiling deputy director.
"Dr. Allen, how's my grandfather?"
He asked urgently.
Dr. Allen said, "Mr. Morgan, I was just looking for you. Howard woke up and is recovering quite well. He's completely out of danger now. He still needs to stay in the hospital for observation for a while and keep his spirits up."
When William heard Dr. Allen say that Howard was fine, his anxious heart finally settled back down.
Thank goodness he was okay.
After seeing off the doctors, only the three of them were left in the room.
William sat by the bed, observing his grandfather's mental state.
Howard had taken another trip to death's door, so naturally, his body was weak. Now that he was awake, he held onto Ava's hand and wouldn't let go, but didn't even give his own grandson a proper look.
"Grandpa, grandpa, how are you feeling?"
William asked a few questions, but Howard ignored him.
The hospital's central air conditioning was on high. Ava had rushed out in a hurry, wearing a thin dress. Only now, seeing Howard awake, did she notice she was a bit cold, with goosebumps on her arms.
"Grandpa, are you cold? Do you need another blanket?"
She asked softly.
Howard slowly waved his hand and opened his mouth to say he wasn't cold.
After speaking, he gripped Ava's hand even tighter, and a hot tear rolled from the corner of his eye.
Ava thought Howard was still shaken from the car accident. She pulled out a tissue and gently wiped away that tear, comforting him,
"Don't be scared, grandpa. It's all over. Your body is fine. We'll take good care of you, and when we go back, I'll exercise with you."
Howard closed his eyes, not wanting to say anything more.
William watched Howard and Ava interact from the side, feeling like an outsider himself. He knew Howard liked this granddaughter-in-law, but he hadn't expected that even while sick in bed, he still wouldn't give his own grandson even a glance.
He felt like a bit of a failure and was also curious about how this little woman in front of him managed to make Howard treat her like his own granddaughter.
She always seemed weak and easy to bully in the Morgan family. Even though she had skills in her profession that everyone respected, she'd never shown them in front of others. In the family's eyes, she was just a decorative vase kept at home.
And yet, Howard even wanted to hand the company over to her.
William stared blankly for a while, then took off his suit jacket and draped it over Ava's shoulders.
