Chapter 144
After hanging up the phone, Sarah was satisfied and started eating the food from the meal box.
William looked a bit gloomy. He could hear Ava's anger on the phone, and he regretted making that call. He felt guilty toward Ava, and it wasn't worth upsetting her over some snacks.
Seeing Sarah eating happily, he fell silent, not wanting to talk.
After filling her stomach, Sarah was in a great mood. She tossed aside the utensils and wrapped her hands around William's arm.
"William, are you worried about your son or me?"
Sarah pulled William's hand toward her belly.
William felt an inexplicable resistance. Hearing her say "your son" made him extremely uncomfortable.
"Sarah."
He suddenly pulled his hand back, his expression cold.
Sarah acted coy. "Just touch it. Inside is our baby together. Aren't you curious what he'll look like?"
"Sarah, I don't really like kids."
He wanted to say he had never planned to have children at all, but, afraid Sarah would make a scene, he held back those words and expressed it more tactfully—he wasn't looking forward to that little thing in her belly. It shouldn't come into this world.
If possible, he hoped she could get rid of that little thing. The only reason he couldn't be so cruel as to force her now was considering her physical condition—he couldn't take away her only chance to be a mother.
After hearing his words, Sarah felt dejected, but comforted herself—whether he liked kids or not didn't matter. What mattered was that she could use this child to drive Ava away from him.
"William, you'll marry me, right?"
Sarah touched her belly and looked at him expectantly.
"I don't want the baby to be born as an illegitimate child. I'd rather die with him than have that."
Hearing her extreme words again, William felt extremely annoyed. Although he had already signed the divorce agreement with Ava, he didn't want to tell Sarah at this moment.
His mind was a mess.
Imagining future life with Sarah—her constantly threatening him with death, plus an annoying kid around—just thinking about that kind of life made him feel suffocated.
On the other hand, Ava, after being married for so long, sometimes fought with William and could be a bit stubborn, but she gave him enough freedom and personal space. She never interfered with his life, friendships, or work, and only brought him relief.
He realized he was already regretting it right after signing the divorce papers.
"Sarah, your heart condition isn't good. Giving birth carries certain risks. How about we don't have the baby?"
Sarah burst into tears instantly.
"William, what do you mean?"
William felt a headache coming on.
"You rest for now. I still have some things to do."
William wanted to smoke a cigarette and calm down. Asking for a divorce yesterday was too impulsive. Things had developed to this point, and he couldn't bring himself to beg Ava and tell her he'd changed his mind.
That would be too embarrassing. He couldn't do it.
Sarah could tell his mood wasn't right and didn't dare to forcefully stop him, so she could only watch helplessly as he left.
After William left, Sarah tidied herself up, changed into a long dress, put on light makeup, and went out. Before leaving, she checked her bag and felt reassured seeing what she'd gotten from her private doctor.
The people living nearby were all friends specially invited by William. She wasn't worried about running into former colleagues who would gossip about her. She hadn't forgotten the main purpose of this trip—discovering her pregnancy was just a small episode.
She still hadn't done what she came to do.
The yacht was heading back and would dock in the afternoon. There wasn't much time left.
Sarah knocked on Emily's door.
"Emily, come out for a drink."
Emily was already dressed up. She had messaged Lewis on her phone but hadn't received his reply yet. She glanced at her phone—still no message she was hoping for. She felt a bit disappointed.
"Let's go."
The two came to the bar. Emily ordered a cocktail, and Sarah ordered juice. Thinking of something, she asked the server to change it to lemon water.
She looked around—no one was there.
Sneakily, she took out a small packet of powder from her bag. This was an abortion drug she'd gotten from an underground private doctor. Only by getting rid of the baby in Ava's belly could she feel at ease.
That woman's child was always a ticking time bomb for her. As long as she came to her senses and told William about the pregnancy, the situation might reverse.
Sarah didn't have the confidence that William would choose her between two pregnant women. She didn't dare gamble and could only be ruthless.
Emily saw her pour a packet of white powder into the glass, which quickly dissolved in the water. She was shocked by Sarah's action.
"Sarah, are you crazy? You're pregnant now. You can't be exposed to this kind of messy drugs. If you're not feeling well, we'll find a doctor when we get ashore. Don't take medicine on your own."
Sarah's eyes showed fierceness.
"Emily, whether the baby in my belly can have the Morgan surname depends on this glass of water."
Emily was confused.
"What are you talking about? If my brother's child doesn't have the Morgan surname, what else would it be?"
At that moment, Ava, who had been sitting in the distant restaurant, finished breakfast and walked out. She hadn't yet noticed the fierce gaze from this direction.
"Emily, you'll help me, right?"
Emily also saw Ava walking toward them from a distance. She puffed out her chest.
"Of course. We're best friends, aren't we? Don't worry, I won't side with Ava."
Sarah asked the bartender for another glass of lemon water and held it in her left hand.
"Emily, let's go over."
Ava had eaten a bellyful of frustration at breakfast. She stared at the leftover snacks on the plate for a long time before coming out of the restaurant, only to run into the people she least wanted to see.
"Ava, what a coincidence. Let's chat and have a drink together?"
Emily's words were provocative.
Ava glanced at her.
"Sorry, I have nothing to talk about with you."
Emily's spoiled temper was about to flare up, but Sarah stopped her.
"Ava, it's rare we meet. Everyone's free, why not have a drink?"
Ava knew these two had bad intentions. Someone had already warned her to be careful of Sarah. She didn't have bodyguards with her now, and it was two against one—she felt quite nervous.
Having a baby made her weak. Before, she had nothing to fear. Now she was afraid something might happen to the baby in her belly—she would never forgive herself for that.
"You two drink. Why drag me into it?"
Ava didn't even stop walking and kept going forward.
Emily and Sarah blocked her path.
Sarah changed from her usual demeanor, adopting a conciliatory tone.
"Ava, don't rush. I'm here to apologize to you today. I didn't expect to get pregnant either. Don't mind it. We are family and shouldn't be at each other's throats. We should support each other."
Ava scoffed. "My family is long gone."
Sarah was her family? What a joke! More like an enemy.
Sarah laughed awkwardly and placed the lemon water from her right hand on the table near Ava's position.
"Ava, don't say that. The children are innocent. Let's let our parents' grudges pass. We both have the Brown family blood flowing through us—that's an unchangeable fact. We were born sisters and should face difficulties together. I've always considered you family. I'm sincere about recognizing you as family. How many relatives can a person have in this life?"
As the glasses clinked, Sarah picked up her own water and took a sip.
"Ava, whether you believe it or not, I truly recognize you as family. How many relatives can one have in a lifetime?"
