Chapter 106
William froze for a moment, then Sarah's voice came from the passenger seat again.
"William, save me, save me..."
William didn't hesitate anymore. He grabbed his suit jacket, wrapped it around Sarah, and carried her out of the car.
Ava's whole body had gone cold. Through the curtain of rain, she watched him run desperately with Sarah in his arms. He must be really worried, right? So worried that he didn't even have time to pick up his phone when it fell into the water.
Sarah's joke at the golf course had come true so quickly - he really left her in the middle of nowhere, without even a word of comfort.
Ava felt weak all over, too exhausted even to cry.
She forced herself to pull it together, opened her phone, found Olivia's number, and called. This location wasn't far from Olivia's hospital.
Olivia arrived quickly. The moment she saw her savior, Ava finally closed her eyes with relief and passed out.
When she woke up again, all she could see were white walls, and the faint smell of disinfectant filled her nose.
"Ava, you're finally awake?"
Olivia's face grew larger and larger before her eyes. Ava suddenly remembered what had happened before she fainted. She grabbed the blanket anxiously.
"Olivia, my baby's okay, right?"
Olivia quickly reassured her.
"It's fine, the baby's fine. You fainted from shock and low blood sugar. I've already checked you over - the baby's heartbeat is good. Don't worry."
Ava's tense nerves relaxed. Only then did she notice that her limbs felt soft and completely powerless.
"Olivia, why do I feel so weak?"
Olivia lifted her arm from under the blanket and gently massaged it.
"You were badly shocked, your body hasn't recovered yet. Let me massage you a bit. Oh, right, your phone rang countless times until the battery died. I just charged it for you - turn it on and let your family know you're safe."
She handed back the phone.
Ava struggled to reach out and pressed the power button. In her recent calls, there was a long string of missed calls. She kept scrolling and couldn't reach the end - all from an unfamiliar number.
She was trying to remember this somewhat familiar-looking number when that phone number called again. Ava swiped to answer.
"Ms. Davis, are you okay? I saw your car..."
Lewis had chatted with Emily in the car for a while before leaving. William's car had left him far behind. When traffic finally cleared and he caught up, he found William's limited-edition Bentley being towed away. The people inside were gone, and the car showed signs of being hit.
Emily called William, but no one answered.
So Lewis kept calling Ava's phone. Although William had forced him to delete that number this morning, he had a good memory and dialed it from his hazy recollection.
Ava was a bit surprised to hear it was Lewis.
"Mr. Jones, didn't you delete me? The car got hit on the road. I'm at my friend's place, I'm fine. William took Sarah to the hospital."
Lewis paused for a moment. "Good to know you're okay."
He couldn't care less about how that woman was doing.
After the call ended, Emily anxiously asked about their situation.
"How are they? Why aren't William and Sarah answering their phones?"
Lewis put his phone on the center console and slowly started the car to head back to the city, answering casually.
"How would I know why they're not answering? They're not together - your brother ran off with that woman."
Emily was already burning with anxiety.
"Just tell me, where is William now? I heard you mention him on the phone."
Lewis paused and told her what Ava had said.
"Your brother took Sarah to the hospital."
The car had already driven a few hundred meters when Emily's sharp eyes spotted a phone left in a puddle ahead.
"Stop, stop! That looks like William's phone on the ground."
Lewis stopped the car. Emily got out with an umbrella - the phone was indeed her brother's. William had even lost his phone, which showed how urgent the situation must have been.
"No, I have to find William. Come with me, please. What if something happened and he needed help? William must be worried without his phone."
Lewis didn't like Sarah, but he couldn't bring himself to do something as tasteless as leaving a young woman in the rain. He turned the steering wheel and pulled the car over to the side.
"Ms. Morgan, to find your brother, we first need to know where he is. Right now, we can't reach William at all. His phone is waterlogged."
"Don't worry, let me try calling Sarah again."
Lewis thought to himself, when was I ever worried?
Emily called over and over, but no one answered.
"Why don't we check nearby hospitals? William dropped his phone outside and abandoned the car. The ambulance didn't see them either - they must have run into an emergency and gone to a nearby hospital."
Lewis thought, I just needed to make sure Ava was okay, and now I'm relieved. Why should I care if that woman lives or dies? She's obviously no good.
Emily was extremely worried, directing Lewis to drive down this street, then that street. By the time they arrived at a hospital, two hours had passed.
Lewis was about to lose it. Could this woman even read a map? He'd driven around the same streets countless times, going back and forth on those same roads.
The two finally found a tiny hospital and went in to try their luck.
At least the rain had stopped, so he didn't have to share an umbrella with her.
Lewis parked the car and followed Emily into the building. Emily grabbed a nurse and asked.
"Excuse me, did a really handsome man and a really pretty woman come to see a doctor here around noon?"
The nurse looked confused. Emily had said a whole string of words without describing any actual features of the patients. So many people come and go at the hospital - who would remember one man and one woman?
The nurse shook her head, indicating she didn't know.
Emily anxiously gestured with her hands. "Let me put it this way - the man is very tall, very handsome, and the woman comes up to about here on him."
She gestured with her hand to show the height.
Lewis, listening from the side, felt frustrated. He couldn't help but add, "The man was wearing a dark shirt and dress pants, with an expensive watch. The woman wore a white dress, had long curly hair, wasn't very good-looking, and they might have been caught in the rain."
With Lewis's description, the nurse recalled.
"Is the woman the one with heart disease?"
Emily nodded eagerly. "Yes, yes! Where are they now?"
"They're in cardiology. Go up to the third floor, and you'll see it."
Emily was beyond excited. "Thank you, thank you!"
She pulled Lewis and ran toward the third floor, even bringing up old grievances along the way.
"Lewis, why did you say Sarah isn't good-looking? She's so pretty, a hundred times prettier than Ava."
The hospital had no elevator, and the stairs were quite old. The hallway windows had leaked during the noon rainstorm, leaving half the floor wet.
Lewis went upstairs with distaste. Hearing Emily say this made him unhappy. He'd already been forced to help her find his brother, and now he had to listen to her trash-talk his goddess? What was he getting out of this?
"Want me to sign you up for ophthalmology while we're here?"
Emily didn't catch on right away. "Why would I need ophthalmology?"
"To get your eyes checked. Your vision might not be so good - you can see beauty that others can't."
Emily was taken aback. "You don't really think Ava is prettier than Sarah, do you? Let me tell you, don't say bad things about Sarah. She's my future sister-in-law. We're going to be family."
